Now holds 147.3 million ounces.

Highest amount held was 649.6 million ounces in December 31, 1941. Not sure if that was all owned by the US, or if some of that is now stored in other locations like the NY Fed depository, but that is a huge difference.

Its still on the books as an asset at 42.22 an ounce. Why dont they revalue it to its current market value?

Because they sold it all to france. Why pay for an audit and revaluation of nothing?

I've been looking for a source to verify that gold in Ft Knox was used for the Manhattan Project (I saw something on either Discovery or History about this) and came across this:

http://ricochet.com/member-feed/Where-s-the-gold-in-Fort-Knox

I'm by no means an economic expert. But I'd wager that, since we no longer rely on the gold standard, it hardly matters whether there's still gold there or not. I'm not sure what our money's value is based on these days other than a vague assurance of equivalent resources and services.

I mean, are people really this dense?

And then there is this two posts down:

http://www.davidicke.com/forum/showthread.php?t=91787

I’ve already reported on irregular physical gold settlements which occurred in London, England back in the first week of October, 2009. Specifically, these settlements involved the intermediation of at least one Central Bank [The Bank of England] to resolve allocated settlements on behalf of J.P. Morgan and Deutsche Bank – who DID NOT have the gold bullion that they had sold short and were contracted to deliver. At the same time I reported on two other unusual occurrences:

1] - irregularities in the publication of the gold ETF - GLD’s bar list from Sept. 25 – Oct.14 where the length of the bar list went from 1,381 pages to under 200 pages and then back up to 800 or so pages.

2] - reports of 400 oz. “good delivery” bricks of gold found gutted and filled with tungsten within the confines of LBMA approved vaults in Hong Kong.

There's much more in that post regarding using Tungsten to fill Gold bars and the people involved.

Here's a site that reports that Silver was used from Ft Knox for the Manhattan Project (along with a long laundry list of why to go Silver):

http://www.roadtoroota.com/public/136.cfm

16) 470M oz of Silver owned by the US Treasury and used in the Manhattan Project for the construction of the atom bomb have all been melted down and sold into the physical market to support the "Strong Dollar Policy"

Here's a site that is in the works by the US Department of Energy:

Something for the Conspiracy Theorists (2/3's of the page down):

http://www.altereddimensions.net/places/FortKnox.aspx

A popular and recurring conspiracy theory, as alleged by Edward Durrell, Norman Dodd, Peter Beter and others, claims that the vault is mostly empty and that most of the gold in Fort Knox was removed to Jerusalem in the late 1960s by President Lyndon Johnson. In response, on September 23, 1974, Senator Walter Huddleston of Kentucky, twelve congressmen, and about 100 members of the news media toured the vault and opened various cells and doors, each filled with gold. Radio reporter Bill Evans, when asked if it seemed like the gold might have been moved in just for the visit, replied that "all I can say is that I saw gold there" and that it seemed like it was always there. Additionally, audits of the gold by the General Accounting Office (in cooperation with the United States Mint and the United States Customs Service in 1974 and the Treasury Department) from 1975-1981 found no discrepancies between the reported and actual amounts of gold at the Depository. However, the audit has been described as a peculiar process because it was only a partial audit done over an extended period of time. The report states only 21 percent of the gold bars were audited as of 1981 (the audit report's issue date) and that the audit has "covered more than 212.7 million fine troy ounces of gold" which "represents over 80 percent of the total amount of United States-owned gold of 264.1 million fine troy ounces." The Fed claims that a small amount of gold is removed for regularly scheduled audits to ensure the purity matches official records.

It seems that a massive amount of Silver from Ft Knox was used in the Manhattan Project:

http://articles.latimes.com/1985-08-05/news/mn-3468_1_manhattan-project/6

The electromagnetic separation process represented a major technical accomplishment. It also represented the kind of carefully concealed bureaucratic sleight-of-hand that was the hallmark of the Manhattan Project.

With copper in short supply, designers of the plant's giant magnets descended on a Treasury official in Washington one day and calmly proposed to borrow several thousand tons of silver from the U.S. mint--which they planned to melt down into wires. The flabbergasted official replied that the proper way to discuss silver was in troy ounces, not tons.

Since childhood I've always been fascinated with Ft Knox and the need to have all of this Gold in one place and would welcome some more information and links about this subject.

ABOUT FORT KNOX GOLD !

In the 1970's a very courageous gentleman named Edward Durrell claimed that
substantially all of the US Gold Reserve being stored at Ft. Knox was gone.
Only 1,000 tonnes or so of the 8,500 tonnes supposedly being stored there
remained. The rest had been secretly taken from Ft. Knox and shipped to
London in 1967 and early 1968 for sale by President Johnson in an ill-fated
attempt to keep the price of Gold at $35 per ounce.

http://hardtruth.topcities.com/nelsonroc...

First, about Fort Knox. You know, the Fort Knox Gold Scandal is just like
the Watergate Scandal in one respect: There is a desperate cover-up going on
right now just as happened with Watergate. The Fort Knox Gold Scandal
cover-up really passed the point of no return last September when the United
States Treasury perpetrated the Fort Knox gold inspection hoax in an attempt
to discredit my charges that there's no gold in Fort Knox because it had all
been illegally removed. Since that time the Government has been getting in
deeper and deeper and deeper, involving more and more people in all sorts of
maneuvers to try to keep the lid on. For example, when the Congressmen and
newsmen visited Fort Knox last September, news stories promised everybody
that the visit would be followed up by an audit of the Fort Knox gold by the
General Accounting Office, but what they actually did was just a very
superficial exercise just to make the record look good, and the group of 15
men that did it had only two (2) General Accounting Office representatives
on it. All the rest were from the Treasury itself--in other words, the fox
went into the henhouse to count our chickens for us.

http://www.skolnicksreport.com/hoodwink....

It may come as a shock to some, but the U.S. has very little so-called
"U.S. government" gold bullion in Fort Knox. A brave outspoken journalist,
Tom Valentine, in the 1970s, exposed as a fraud that there was
world-trade-quality gold at Fort Knox. All they have left are poor quality,
orangish-looking, melted down coin metal from the seizure in 1934, of gold
coins from America's common people. [The American aristocracy, warned in
advance, shipped THEIR gold out of the U.S.] The U.S. governmentt gold is
gone. Why? Because it was shipped, under the supervision of a ply-able U.S.
General, to the private central octopus called the Bank of England, in 1968,
to stem a run on that bank which had somehow lost all their own gold.]

http://www.freedomdomain.com/News/nnorfe...

The organization chaired by Alan Greenspan is a coalition of private
international banks, that does not answer to the United States Government.
And there is no precious metal warehoused in Fort Knox or elsewhere that
backs the money that they issue.

http://www.anomalous-images.com/text/NAZ...

Large shipment of gold leaves Fort Knox, public doesn't know that their
national gold 'reserves' are being secretly depleted by one-world national
socialist agents working in U.S. government. Gold at Fort Knox replaced with
gold-plated lead bars, making it the biggest heist in history. Rockefellers
involved. James MacDonald becomes critical of Air Force and the CIA.

http://hardtruth.topcities.com/treason_n...

Throughout the 20th century this movement toward a one world government has
been marching on. This is not new or recent. In his book Critical Path
Buckminster Fuller gives a very impressive sweep of the 20th century, about
the large corporations and their agents and the lawyers who basically
control the country far more than the people understand. He talked about how
all the gold was removed from Fort Knox by the 1960's.
Where did it go?
It went to the banks. They own the country. Fuller called the CIA,
"capitalism's invisible army."

NOTE # 1: This is the TENTH doc in a string of about 37 regarding the
Income Tax, How it was illegally forced upon us, the collusion of various
nation banks, including The Bank of England, the Banks of Europe,
the Banks of the USA that make up the Non-Government
organization known as the Fed and the bankers themselves
dedicated to making this a Socialist Nation.

As David Rockefeller reportedly said in 1973 when he and others
formed the Trilateral Commission,
"We will have this a Socialist Nation by the end of the year 2000."

Well, with the help of our past Communist President, he damned well
nearly did it.

If Comrade Gore had been elected, it would be now!

The last doc in this series is a plan that was presented to
President Bush when he visited Florida recently.
It was put directly into his hands. He has not acted upon it.

We The People must initiate a campaign of letters, faxes,
e-mails, and phone calls to him and others in our otherwise
corrupt government letting them know of our displeasure.

For God and Country...

Silver, not Gold.

The silver was used to make wire for electromagnets, as copper was being used elsewhere (bullets, mostly).

NOT AS OF LAST MONTH. Ft Knox in October moved all it's armor and training facility to Ft Benning.FT Knox as of Oct is now manned and staffed officially as the new "Home of the New Human Resources Center".

FORT KNOX, Ky. (Army News Service, May 28, 2010) -- Fort Knox witnessed the last chapter of the Armor Center here, during a transfer of authority ceremony May 27.

During the ceremony, Maj. Gen. James Milano, the Fort Knox commander and 44th Chief of Armor, relinquished command of the installation to Lt. Gen. Benjamin Freakley, commander, U.S. Army Accessions Command.

The Armor and Infantry centers will be abolished as separate entities and incorporated into the new Maneuver Center of Excellence. That new organization will be located at Fort Benning, Ga.

The U.S. Army Accessions Command, Cadet Command, and Human Resources Command, which are now in Virginia, will join the U.S. Army Recruiting Command at Fort Knox in order to consolidate the Army's personnel managers under one roof and form the Human Resource Center of Excellence.

I covered this in great detail in October when the last of the Infantry and Armor units left.Nothing left to guard at Ft Knox except volumes of service members records.

If there's nothing of value to guard, who needs armored infantry?

Given to more contemporary tactics, I will conjecture that the 101st Airborne Division in Ft. Campbell Kentucky (http://www.campbell.army.mil/units/101st/Pages/default.aspx) would be tasked with any necessity for rapid reaction at Ft. Knox.
