Do any of you have a 2011 Red book? I need to know what it says is the mintage of the 2006-W $10 burnished 1/4 oz. AGE? My searching tells me between 15-16 thousand but some fellow just told me the Red book said it was under 5,000 mintage. Please, can anyone verify the correct mintage figure for this fairly rare coin? More precisely, he state the info is on page 344 of the 2011 edition of Red Book.

thanks

Red Book is unmitigated TRASH with its sloppiness on many moderns. What you need to know is Redbook published the whole gamut of 06-08 plat and gold eagles and buffs without including the coins contained in the multi-coin sets. The real mintage of the 06-w unc $10 gold eagle is 15,188. http://www.usmint.gov/mint_programs/american_eagles/index.cfm?action=AmEagUnc#salesTable What is the price he is offering it at?

Thanks. I wasn't aware of that. What about the prices listed in Red Book.... valid or also wrong?
For example, Red Book price for that coin shows $350.

It's good policy to just ignore redbook when researching modern sales numbers. They will wait years to finally publish a mintage, and even then screw it up when they do. That's bad when it's the go-to book for the entire hobby. It would be easy to decieve someone just by quoting redbook and be able to tout certain moderns like plat eagles which have single-issue mintage in the hundreds.

Redbook can't be used accurately for prices because it is necessarily way out-of-date. The single best sources for pricing is Coin Dealer Newsletter (greysheet), or completed ebay auctions.

Thanks again. After I posted that question I realized it was a stupid question because of the daily changes in gold prices.

Do these, as a four-coin set(2006-W burnished, unc), command a premium in ungraded status? I have been watching the bay for awhile but no auctions.
Sry, apparently they do-- http://cgi.ebay.com/2006-W-Gold-American-Eagle-Four-Coin-Set-/220705436254?pt=Coins_US_Individual&hash=item336311b25e
I am learning how to use eb*y again.

In the distant future I think such will be the case. Not so much with the 2006-w age set you describe, but with others like the '06 age 3-coin set, the '08-w a.g.e, a.p.e., & gold buff unc 4 coin sets that contain key ---or multiple key--coins. The incentive to break up these low-production sets to slab or sell the keys individually is great which will leave relatively few intact down the road.

I've been working on the $10 W set and have the 1999W and the 2006W. Its looking like the 2008W is going to be the challenge without paying through the nose.
