FOR SALE! MAKE AN OFFER

THese are not a common half. Rarely seen. Minted in 1936

About the Coin
-Long Island Tercentenary Half Dollar
1936 was the year of the commemorative half dollar. As a speculative mania developed in these special coins, no less than 16 new designs appeared. In addition, several existing types were reissued with the date 1936, since their authorized mintages had not yet been reached. In all, collectors active in that year could chose from a total of 21 different commemorative coins bearing the current date, a record not likely to ever be broken. Almost lost among this bewildering array of special coins was an unpretentious issue marking the 300th anniversary of European settlement on New York’s Long Island. To everyone’s surprise, it proved one of the best selling and least controversial offerings to come out of that memorable year.

The first white people to establish a community on Long Island were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1636....... read HERE (http://www.coinsite.com/content/commemoratives/LongIsland.asp)

THe pics do it no justice. It is far more clean and silver looking.

So should it be graded? You can tell it sat in a box for the past 50 years....

Not a rare coin.

Most saved in mint condition..as issued, much like this modern mint crap being spewed out like popcorn at the theater.

Turn off the greed lite.

$50-$200 most likely...

A quick check shows just under 82K minted and as DeweyDog said, most found would be in MS 64+ condition in spite of the years that have passed.

1936 was a crazy year for commemoratives. There was a lot of speculation in them and a lot of hype pushed on the public by some high profile coin dealers. This was depression era America and people were surprised to see that numismatics had held up rather well during the tough times. 1935 was a big year for a particular commemorative coin, the Daniel Boone Bicentennial Half, and it had risen in price from 3 bucks to upwards of 60 in the course of the year. This primed the public to buy into the hype and buy and hold these 1936 halves as "investments". That is why the ones found today are almost all in pristine condition and there are big numbers of them that have survived. They were all tucked away by our grandparents because they were planning for little Johny's future. Perhaps there is a lesson in this for those speculating in present day commemoratives.

WOW - Guys thanks for all the feedback. I am thinking of becoming a member of either PCGS or NGC. I have several coins I want to get graded.

Perhaps this is for another thread though.

If I get this coin graded will that entice the sale?

I'd like to get rid of it.

Now how do you expect to entice anyone to buy when you put it that way?

There are a number of coin numi forums where you will likely find people with a lot more interest and experience in numismatics.

Grading costs money and will ensure the price that's why.

As far as getting rid of it goes, well, i bought it to sell it.
