Even if you think the P is going to sell out for some reason, you can buy the puck on the 29th of May and the set on the 29th of June, it's going to be on sale for a month. For only four weeks, from June 7, 2012, to July 5, 2012, the United States Mint will be offering a special new set to coin enthusiasts..

I just want to buy em before they raise the price. Have some time before that happens.

Ok. That does it for me! I'm done trying to figure out the Mint's logic (if any). Much easier to figure out how Dennis Rodman's mind works.

Its a government run operation, it does not apply logic like the free market does. They make cents not sense.

I agree they don't make sense but in this (UNC 5oz ATB) case they don't make cents either. Using last week's sales figures the Mint had 89,496 2011 "P" pucks left on the shelves selling at a rate of 1420/mon for all 5 issues. At that rate it will take 5 1/4 years for the 2011s to sell out but now with the announced sale of the 2012s another 175,000 (assuming 35,000 mintages/coin) "P" pucks will be added to the inventory. Common sense tells me sales of the 2012s will detract from the already pathetic sales of the 2011s and that boggles my already boggled mind.

The only thing that does make sense is drastically reduced "P" puck mintages starting with the 2012 issues.

Therein lies my concern as well, I have a feeling we will see prices rise coupled with perhaps the move to reduce the number minted per issue. Factor in that I think this new issue may be one of the more popular issues as it really is a nice depiction of "El Yunke" and may see some brisk purchases compared to some fo the older issues that continue to lag. Toss in the remaining issues that are due this year and we will have a glut until mintage numebrs are reduced to elimiante overage and drive desirability.

1. Tie the price to weekly spot like with gold and plat

2. Make a %$@* proof for those who like the shiny

3. Do a little marketing, offer them in a set for a discount - something, anything:boring:

P Puck sales for week ending 21 May 2012...Yikes!

2011-P Gettysburg 5 Ounce Uncirculated Silver Coins 21,602 21,656 54 0.25% 35,000
2011-P Glacier 5 Ounce Uncirculated Silver Coins 18,195 18,227 32 0.18% 35,000
2011-P Olympic 5 Ounce Uncirculated Silver Coins 15,848 15,889 41 0.26% 35,000
2011-P Vicksburg 5 Ounce Uncirculated Silver Coins 15,844 15,888 44 0.28% 35,000
2011-P Chickasaw 5 Ounce Uncirculated Silver Coins 14,015 14,070 55 0.39% 35,000

That's a total of 226 2011 UNC 5oz ATBs sold this past week.

As a comparison the week prior saw total sales of 355. That's a 36% drop in total sales over a week and does not factor in the effect of the upcoming 2012 release.

I have a visual:

Opening shot showing front of US Mint.

An old guy in coveralls whistling tunelessly walks by a calendar showing the year 2022. He opens a creaky door, walks to the far corner of a dimly lit room and starts dusting off numerous items stored on a shelf. The camera moves in tight to show stacks of 5 oz UNC 2011 Chickasaws, Glaciers etc.

I wonder if Apmex has some inside knowledge about if the mint is going to lower the price of these? It seems odd that Apmex would sell these coins for below the price the mint is selling them at unless they thought the mint was going to lower prices?

No Worry, if 2011 is an indicator it should be well under 20,000.

Anyone else find it interesting that first release dates have highest sales while the last releases have the lowest. This is true for 2010 and 2011 so far. If that is true for 2012 Denali and Hawaii should be lower sales.

That is a great achievement. Many have died trying to summit that mountain. Of the 2012 series I think Denali is the best one, Hawai'i is a close second.

With the current price of silver, they are asking a hefty premium. I wonder how low silver will have to go before they reprice these lower.....

The bullion version is currently going for 40 dollars less. For those counting their pennies that premium is an extra ounce of silver. Guessing there will be an initial sales spike for hard core collectors and then it drops off a cliff settling below Chickasaw sales unless they decide to reprice.

I bought all the 2011's at the same time and saved by having 1 shipping charge. I'll monitor the sales, and pick up an individual issue prior to the whole set being out there if the price drops by $25 or the sales hit 20K.

I have been buying the "P" coins in the aftermarket for less than the Mint charges, and I am going to continue to do so for as long as I can. The Mint should reprice the coins as the silver value is less than $140, so the markup is over $60. The Mint price should drop by at about $10 to keep the surcharge in line.

Just remember that the reason you got them for less than Mint price in the after market was because of speculators out there gambling on these and many have lost money just trying to unload them. With pm's tanking and so little interest, there will probably be a lot fewer sold at this price point, future after market purchases may just be around Mint price anyway. These 2012's should be available for a while though, so plenty of time to see which way the wind blows.

Probably, but I am not concerned with chasing MS-70 coins as I think the graded coin scam will one day go the way of the tulip bulb bubble. I find it funny how I can take a raw coin, get it graded MS-69, crack it out of the holder, send it back to the same grading company, and have it come back MS-70.

My real concern is silver that is hard/unlikely to counterfeit at fair prices. The five ounce coins have relatively low mintage, a USG imprint, and would need a special press to make or counterfeit.

Just like grading anything in this entire world, there are differences of opinion. Grading won't go away. You/we/they place extra value based on higher grade - no matter what the product. You may not be willing to pay an extra 5% for a better grade, but someone may and I think the market will always be there, unless we be talkin' ZombieWorld.
