I got El Yunque -P today. It's my first P ATB. I only have one Chickasaw bullion and it's ugly/unimpressive. El Yunque is a beauty! I also got the ATB 90% quarters and they are superb. Looking forward to Hawaii. I think I am going to get the other parks this year.
So... the chatter on these is dwindling. That's a very good sign. All we need is the mint to dial back production and we are set.

Remember UGLY coins produce LOW mintages. Silver is actually cheaper today then it was in 2001 - if you compare the MONEY supply then and now.
Strange how gold and silver seem to keep up with the Wizards worldwide with their fingers on the CTRL-P (print) buttons.

The 2012 America the Beautiful Five-Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin – Chaco Culture National Historical Park, New Mexico (NQ1) became available today (for $204.95).
19778
Since then next one (Acadia) becomes available on August 13th, I think I will wait and order them both then.

You never know when silver will spike, so keep an eye on the silver price. The mint price lags so we have time. I'm with you, but if we see a spike in silver price then buy right away!
I'm a coin collecting sucka so I will probably just buy Chaco soon anyway....

You have a good point there. I am being frugal (okay, cheap) and trying to avoid the shipping charge on one of the coins. I will keep my eye on the silver price so I don't end up screwing myself trying to save five bucks.

I got my El Yunque today. Very nice - I love the parrot and frog on it. I'm really glad I stayed with these - how cool is it going to have the whole set?

It will be very cool to have a complete set. I'm still with the raw, and "P" mint. I want to try and complete two full sets.
I'm not a collector, but a full set would be hard for me to sell.

The Mint pulled the proof SAE coins to reprice them lower.....

I wish they'd pull the 5 ounce ATBs and lower them back to $179.95.... Okay, I'm dreaming, I know.

That's a pretty coin. I'm waiting for the next one to come out, then I'll buy both and save shipping. Maybe by then it'll be $179.95. Or not.

My SP70 ERs just came in from MCM on the El Yunques.
They were only a few bucks more than the SP69s.

Just got creamed on my recent submission to PCGS, with 3 El Yunque's... 1 SP 69 and 2 67's - due to Milk Spots - that I swear I did not see prior to submission... hmmmm And, I recently defended them a bit regarding Milk Spots...
Could have saved money and just bought from MCM cheaper, but I always like the gamble/possible 70 factor... Also, I went against my advice and hesitated - normally I buy and submit extremely fast... This is my own fault for not following my own rules/advice/system...
I swear MCM gets their coins dropped-shipped to NGC/PCGS, and they sort through the 69's & 70's for them, then return the rest and that's what we get - the rejects. Plus, MCM is getting pricey and picky on what they buy... This game is changing all the time... Up & Down, Up & Down....
Can we start a top ten lowest mintage modern coin thread? A sticky, & one that only members can view? I will contribute/help manage, if someone else can get it started...

NGC and PCGS on bulk submissions at one time could be instructed to slab only x-grade or better.....returning lower than x-grade or better, this is probably STILL in effect. Result was less cost to the submitter, and faster turn around for those "Valuable" First Strikes.....don't think for a minute that the big boys don't get preferential treatment.

Doesn't matter, I don't slab them.
Pardon me while I eat my words. :munch, munch.
After a few rounds of discussing these items, I decided to join the slabbing crowd on these. I know some of you think it's a waste of time & money........but mostly money. From the 12th issue on I will buy slabbed coins. The deal is hard to beat if you consider the cost of the coin (plus shipping), slab fees and shipping (both ways) and getting a pot-luck grade vs buying a slabbed coin (plus shipping) of the grade you desire. So NGC will be happy as I reactivate my membership and ship my original 11 ATB's to them for grading. These will be pot luck on the grades, but what can you do?
You convinced me HS.
:atipofthehat to you
And as someone said "it'll keep the mintage numbers down".

Mr Lucky, I find that ironic, since I've nearly decided to go the other way! So far I've bought 69 slabs [ETA: graded "69s" NOT 69 coins :p], however now I'm thinking of buying directly from the mint, as I feel the value would be the same, however I'm usually paying more for them.
This is obviously only in regards to 69s versus raw OGP, not the 70 game...I'd like to hear other perspectives...

I know.
But I think we're a bit different here. You have 69 slabs (coins) so far. I have only 11. I am collecting only for myself, not to speculate. I assume you are speculating, forgive me if I'm wrong but 6 sets seems a bit extreme for a private collection. At least to me. I'll also be buying 70's. The difference is minimal compared to the overall price.
I've also decided to forgo bullion issues for 2012, regardless of the diving interest (see chart on an earlier page). Up to this point I have been collecting both.
Of course, nothing is written in stone. By this time next year I may be back to ogp issues only.
Another difference here may be is that I am working now. I was laid off in 2011 but am working now. So now there is some $'s available for foolish ventures.

HA! We're actually opposite-opposite! I have only a few graded SP-69s... NOT 69 slabs, and fewer oz than you! I had a few MS-69 bullions, but sold them when I had a soul-searching event re: the mintage and forecasted demand. If I had that extra "foolish" money, I'd go for SP-70s with OGP from MCM, and pay the extra $50 or whatever.
But as things are in my world, I have to pick and choose which design I really want. My developing thought is that raw/OGP may actually be superior to SP-69...and for less money. HOWEVER, based on the turn of this conversation, perhaps I should just cough up the extra $50 for SP-70s...hmmm.

I collect the graded bullion but if I were collecting Ps, I'd probably just get the Mint version in OGP. The quality is much more consistent than the bullion version, so grading is less important. Also, Silvertowne usually has good prices on their slabs, worth a look to compare with MCM.

Well that does change things a bit now doesn't it?
So now you see, people have many different reasons for collecting what they do. And mostly those reasons make sense only to them.
I call it "foolish money" as I believe collecting is pretty much that, foolish. I bought heavily from the Mint is the 70's. That stuff is now worth about face value. So much for the premium. :vollkommenauf:
It's a bit different this time because of the price of PM's.
I was once like you. I originally was going to collect only the ones I wanted. Then I feared the series might be cancelled and I wouldn't even get the ones I liked. So I decided to go "all in" and buy them all. So I sacrifice other things, dinners out, movies, etc. to collect these.
Is the "raw/OGP superior to SP-69" ? Who knows? Surely, not me.

I"m collecting ungraded bullion and mint P"s.
All the bullion coins I have look at least 69 to me, and were cheaper. Since I am keeping them I really don"t care what they would grade.

Can someone please explain the Mint's logic (if there is any) in continuing this program beyond 2012? It's going take 12 YEARS for the Chickasaw to sell out! This is entering the crazy zone. Talk about flat lining.

If they follow suit from dropping the ASE proof price $5...think of how a $25 drop in puck price would help sales.

I hear ya, but I'm still buying cause I like them.
And think how many pucks you can buy per one ugly spouse.
HistoryStudent
07-25-2012, 11:08 PM
I hear you brother. I imagine that gold might hit $10,000 so the spouse would go for melt at $5,000.
Today you can buy about 4.59 SP US (204.95) Mint boxed pucks for one spouse (941.00).
so let's say you were buying 10 spouses you could buy around 46 - 5 oz. pucks SP OGP Boxed.
So if gold hits say $10,000 oz. (sounds crazy right - but it's not compared to the paper fiat printing)
Your 10 spouses would go for around $50,000. Because over $3,000 gold hits spot.
Now let's take those 46 pucks times 5 ounces = 230 ounces of SILVER PURO.
If gold hit $10 Grand silver would hit around $500 so 500 times 230 = $115,000
So not only are you right, partner, you are damn right. Why do you think I HOOR the 5 oz pucks in UNC?
Low mintage high value - I like them slabbed. They be worth way more than a grand and the folks will buy them easier slabbed.
Imagine a box of 500 silver eagles. Now about $15,000 would sell for $250,000.
Now that's LEVERAGE.
Let it be said you make your bets and you take the risk and reap the rewards.
