Bought 3 Swiss 20 francs off eBay supposed to be 1935, 1935, and 1930. One of the 1935's turned out to be a 1980. Now I'm not sure what to do next. Try to send everything back? Through the seller? Through eBay/paypal?

Haven't bought euro gold fractionals in a few years but I did buy several French, Belgium, Austrian, Swiss coins and some Sovereigns, all circulated. All of the coins I bought were from the late 1800's to the early 1900's. When I bought them, I paid very close to spot, almost no premium at all. The value was essentially 100% in the gold value. You may have wanted old coins for their intrinsic interest to you (I would too) but from a monetary standpoint, you haven't been ripped.

There is no 20 Swiss Franc from 1980 just 20 Rappen (think cents). Can you recheck and maybe post a picture here so we can see what you've got. If you did not received what you were supposed to, is easy to file/win a dispute via either Ebay or Paypal. But first let's make sure what you've got there :D

Here are 20 Rappen pictures, let me know if this is what you've got

If you actually misread the date, say it was a 1930 that you thought was 1980, no big deal you've got 2 1930 and 1 1935 instead of the other way around ...

Hope it helps and let us know,

I'm an idiot. I misread the date, it is in fact a 1930. I was in a hurry so didn't have time to more closely inspect the coin. Sorry for the hullabaloo.

First thing you need to do is file a pay pal claim. Then they will direct you to negotiate with the seller. They will tie up the money until it is resolved. They allways find in favor of the buyer and if the seller refunds you first you are good if not Pay Pal always wait for 30 days after the claim was filed then find in favor of the buyer.

Even if the seller sent you what was advertised , open a claim anyways , send the seller back an empty box, get refunded, keep coins. Seems to be quite popular these days. Yes sarcasm incase someone didn't get that.

LOL The seller always looses. The first post I posted is what happens from a sellers prospective. I have sold using pay pal for a long time not on e-bay but in other venues and on my own web site. my first post is from personal experience. I always just refund the buyer if they file a claim or if I want to get nasty I make them wait for 30 days to get their money back. (when I preceive fraud) seller will loose regardless of the situation or documentation.

Yep. Thats why I would never sell anything between $100 and $2000 on ebay. More than $2000 you could get legal on them and they know it. That ain't petty theft anymore.

I learned the hard way when I got back an empty box with a piece of wood.

Yeah, it's sad.

BTW you know if a seller doesn't tape a small flat rate box shut, it's possible to open it up by a side flap, remove contents, then close it back up again. Then you break out a video camera and record opening up the box and showing nothing inside. Irrefutable proof and evidence for ebay to refund your money.

You actually wouldn't even need to be that sophisticated. You could tear a package apart, claim you received it like that, then paypal will have you send the torn package back to the seller, and you get a refund. There's so many ways for a buyer to shaft a seller, it's not even funny.

Glad it's OK, the seller shipped fast! One thing to look at with the Swiss 20 franc coins is if there is a 'L' and a 'B' it's a restrike. Just a 'B' and it's an original.

Not that it matters, they smacked out tens of millions of these coins. But it's fun to look.

The two 1935's are "LB" restrikes (from 1946 I believe). The 1930 is original. It's funny how I started reading here because I was interested in buying gold/silver, but now I'm learning a lot about the coins themselves.

Sounds like ebay is getting really sketchy. They need to improve the buyer/seller feedback system. What happened to the days when someone who cheated people out of money was tied to a horse and dragged through town?

We quit selling on e-bay a few years ago when the seller could no longer give feedback. My wife had over 2000 sales at that time. We still use Pay Pal but are very careful in what we are doing but realizing if the customer knows how it works they can scam you anytime they wish. I heard of some unscrupulous customers on e-bay for instance had a piece of glassware and it was broken so they go to e-bay and find another one in good condition. when they get it home they take a photo of the broken one and submit it to pay pal and get a full refund along with a new item like the one they broke. Sorry I got off track I will quit posting this subject on the pm forums.

part of the issue is that the seller is basically selling to the buyer that offered the highest price or did the BIN the quickest. They can't choose to sell it to a more legitimate looking buyer that offered a similar price. So the buyer can pick and choose the seller based on price & qualities of the seller, but the seller can't do the same.

Even though there are deals to be had, I gave up on ebay and thier partners in crime paypal around a year ago.
