I only own a few slabbed pieces, but only because I got them for non-slabbed prices.

Buying slabbed bullion is like hiring a stripper with a pretty dress.

Yep, what he said. Also if the only choice is slabbed for bullion price. The only 1/2 sovereign I have ever seen for sale was a MS 68 and I got it for $7 over melt.

Yup, crack those open. Doesn't matter when you pay unslabbed prices.

Bought lots of slabs over the years before the pop over 10 bucks silver and 600 gold started, all were at at or close to melt. Wouldnt buy them at todays prieums though.

Buying slabbed coins is like buying a bunch of hookers and forgetting the blow...

What slabs I have/had were registered with PCGS...I don't worry about any of them being fakes.
That being said...I stopped buying slabs when PGCS joined the others handing out ms-70s like candy ... I guess they could not resist what with NGC making so much money. They sold out...and I do not collect slabs anymore.

My ASE Collection ended at 2007 and what was once one of the best in the country now ranks about 150...

Bought slabbed bullion coins years ago because I was buying them through the mail and was concerned about the condition of the coins. The price wasn't a whole lot more than raw coins and I like my stuff in top condition- the collector in me. Glad I did now because of the increase in value of course.

Somehow the words "bullion" and "slabbed" don't seem right to be in the same sentence, except for the ATB's. I voted non-slabbed.

Problem is the chinese are faking these slabbed coins right down to the bar code, and they are good enough to have fooled a few coin folks I know who are by no means newbies!

I have some PCGS slabbed (MS-69 /W mint mark) Gold Eagles that I bought for bullion mark-up, otherwise, I wouldn't have them. I haven't considered breaking them out...I think I'll just leave them as is and see if I can't get more from them some day.

I'm not trying to say there are not fakes out there...I know there are. All I am saying is that when you register your coins via the barcode with PCGS, they authenticate that the coin is real. Money back guarantee.

But they can fake that, too.

I'm with the guys that say they get them slabbed when they can at bullion prices. I was recently at a coin show and watched a guy haul in a ANACS MS-70 ASE collection from 1986 through 2001. The dealer paid him spot - 1$ per coin. They guy didn't like it but took the money and left. I offered to buy them from the dealer and he happily sold them all to me for spot + $1. I got the impression that he probably would have sent them in for melt if I hadn't bought them...

Oh and did I mention that they have lovely toning on them?

Yeah, why in the world would I want to buy (or have slabbed) bullion, especially silver? When you go to sell, are there really that many
dealers who drool over a slabbed ASE or other kindred? It beats the hell outta me. Does the cost of slabbing pass on or is it just some fuzzy feel good that Joe got a 2010 Libertad slabbed? What if Joe has a couple hundred ounces, is he going to get them all slabbed?

I agree its a scam but if people are will to pay for them, oh well. I would rather have a so-called rare bullion coin slabbed than not.

Isnt ANACS one place behind Ziploc in the slabbing biz? I thought is was either PSCG or NGC, anything else is a fraud delay mechanism

Yes, with a but....they might not be good for grading, [but] I am sure they are good enough to make sure you have a real coin and not a fake. That should be worth spot + $1....for a novice stacker.

Edited to add: Unless it is a fake slab. You should always verify that you are getting the real deal by registering the coin with the company that slabs it....there are fakes out there.
