View Full Version : Buying ammo online vs. cash-and-carry

I've had several of my shooting buddies recommend at various times that I check out cheaperthandirt.com for ammo, and while I'm impressed by the apparent availability of 7.62x39 ammo (which I've had trouble finding at Wally World), I'm wondering if it would raise red flags with UPS if I were to receive regular packages from Cheaperthandirt that, I'm guessing, would be marked in some way as containing ammunition. Do any of you order ammo by mail on a regular basis?

I've ordered tens of thousands of rounds over the internet, and the theys haven't gotten me yet. I'm sure I'm on a list somewhere, but we're all on multiple lists. I'm sure posting on GIM gets you on a list all by itself. I refuse to live my life in fear of the man, period.

BTW, cheaper than dirt is a ripoff, shop around.

Can you recommend other sites for ammo that aren't a ripoff? :)

Local selection isn't always the best. And it's almost always higher in price, except at Wal-Mart, who usually has the worst selection.

Ordering by mail, however, does present the very real risk of being "reported" to the Federal regime, either by the vendor, or the carrier. Each parcel of ammunition is supposed to carry a Federally-mandated ORM-D / Small Arms Ammunition sticker to prevent it being flown on an aircraft (UPS Ground & FedEx Ground sometimes gets carried by air if there aren't enough air shipments to fill the plane), as well as alerting the carrier to a potential hazard. Buy a small box here & there from Cabela's or Midway USA? You probably will slide. Buy half a ton of boxes from Ammunition to Go or bobsalcoholtobaccoandfirearms.com, and you might get a visit from the BATF.

Midway USA
Cabela's
Ammunition to Go
sgammo.com (lots of "overrun" cop stuff - legal to own but hard to get due to manufacturer restrictions)
Sportsman's Guide (be very careful, some is great, some is not)

Always comparison shop. Always check sites like Retail Me Not for coupons (Midway USA almost always has one floating about).

Here is a site that keeps track of prices, and also gives you a URL to use for watching your favorite caliber:
http://gun-deals.com/caliberimages.php

Since you mentioned 7.62x39, here is their link for that:

I don't think ordering ammo from the internet is a problem...yet. As Beef said, I have ordered tens of thousands of rounds over the internet and I have shot tens of thousands of rounds that I have purchased over the internet. Ammo is an expendable item category for me. I use the link above to search for 7.62x51 pills but most of those vendors carry multiple flavors as well. Bx3

I have also ordered ammo online with no problem thus far. It is legal at this time. Many law enforcement agencies order ammo and firearm in this manner, so I'm not sure that it draws too much attention. I can foresee this changing in the not too distant future though. Another good site that someone put me onto in this forum awhile back is ammoman. They have very reasonable prices and shipping is always included in the price.

I only order online. My local guys cant match the price of some of the online vendors. A few weeks ago, my UPS guy asked if he could come along with me when he delivered 6000 rounds of 5.56. I don't think it would raise any red flags with UPS. In my younger days I threw boxes for UPS. The only time we reported a package was if it was ripped open. They deliver stuff that is their job. If they do put you on a list its probably a best customer list. Ammo is not cheap to ship.

Efforts to keep the general public safe from people like the folks here on this forum have been stepped up recently in Colorado....

I buy my piddly little amount at the local stores. I enjoy the hunt and looking around at all the cool stuff anyway.

Word to the wise about Eric/Marty/Ammoman.

The guy is the lowest form of scum. There is a reason he, as a paid sponsor no less, has been thrown off of every firearms site on the net. Google 'ammoman' and 'fraud'.

I use Ammunition-to-Go almost exclusively. There's not much of a choice in these parts, for 9x18 or 7.62x25 and the shipping rates are very competitive. Cheaper Than Dirt sucks dog dick.

If you're willing to drive a little ways (I think you're in the SW OH area/northern KY....), check out www.aimsurplus.com .

They're in Middletown, OH, and I believe that they still allow customer pickups on ??Wednesdays?? at their facility (please call them & verify).

AIM is good people....I've bought from them for over 12 years, and like them a lot. Waaaaay back when, they allowed non-FFL holders to buy 01FFL items at their countertop. Too bad that they discontinued this some years ago.

Don't order from the Guns and Gear store. While I understand they are a business, but to be shipping a heavy box to a residential address, with neighbors less than five feet away... and to label the box with a big "Guns & Gear Store" sticker... just ain't gonna help me in the "neighborly relations" front.

I found this out when my sixty-eight year old neighbor asked me if I'm a terrorist while we were in the elevator. No joke.

Have ordered on line for years.... wouldn't change unless forced too!

Last Christmas I bought all the adults family members pistols. Anticipating many hours range shooting for each owner, I bought them several thousand rounds for plinking, and a bunch for personal defense. I got home to find several dozen boxes with ammunition in 6" high red letters on the side, clearly visible from the street. I happened to meet my neighbor and UPS man at the mailbox that day, to which they responded:

"big Guard dog

Massive store of ammo

Less than sane owner

We think robbers will choose another house to burgler."

I wouldn't want it any other way..... btw heavy ammunition boxes weigh and look about the same as yellow or green monster boxes. But the produce opposite reactions from nosy neighbors.....

I have ordered online for years as well and like Beef, don't really care who knows cuz I am already in multiple databases.

I order Fiocchi 7.62x39 ammo from CTD because it's the cheapest reloadable stuff I've found for my Ruger Mini-30 (I refuse to shoot steel).

Here's Sam Gabbert's link. He's out of Oklahoma. I've met him face-to-face and find him an upright guy:

http://www.sgammo.com/catalog/rifle-ammunition/762x39

FWIW, I have ordered from ammoman numerous times with no problems. His return policy is clearly posted on his website. If you can't accept those terms, don't give him your business.

I have received many Ammo shipments from online orders ....all arrive with the "ORM-D" sticker on them....i do not recall any of the boxes being specifically labeled as "ammunition" .......i have also received many other packages marked "ORM-D" with items such as chemicals, paint etc.

my point is "ORM-D" is not specific to ammunition and as such does not alert anyone as to the specific content of the package

I agree RE SGAmmo, but the problems with Eric/Marty/Ammoman go WAY beyond crappy customer service and shipping hassles. He got the boot from Arfcom for selling "vet bringback" SKSs that were in fact fresh imports. Then he told the buyers to pound sand.
