Water Storage Outside

I'm concerned about my food grade water barrel in the garage and the remants of gasoline and other contaminants leaching into the water over time. I have an unused dog run on the side of the house and was wondering if I placed a barrel on some cinder blocks or what have you and also cover with a tarp if the water would store alright. Anyone have any suggestions or advice? Thanks.

I have food grade water barrels (blue, right?).

They are sealable. Leave them in the garage.

I've been hesitant to put water barrels in my garage due to the extreme temperature variations--my garage is detached from the rest of the house and doesn't have any sort of temperature control. Would high temperatures in the garage matter with regard to food-grade plastic possibly leaching into the water, or would it be OK to go ahead and keep the barrels there during summer months, when the garage becomes a sauna?

I would not be to worried about chems leaking in to the water being in a garage
unless you literally have enough fuel lying around on the floor to cause a major
fire hazard. but i would try to keep the water as cool as posible and if like Nicheless
your garage is very hot i would look at other options.you will also need to consider
freezing if you live in a very cold enviroment.

Would there be any concerns about chemicals leaching into the water in a hot garage if the barrels are food-grade? If so, maybe it'd make sense to go ahead and put barrels in the garage anyway and set up a secondary filtering system--perhaps a sand filter?--to help remove some of the chemical residue, if any.

by all means set up a filtering system thats a good idea anyway but another idea
i had if chemical leaching is considered a problem would be just a small quiet fan
set up to exhaust the garage so that those chemical fumes dont build to a point where it would be a concern.also it will help keep the temp down

Its more than likely not an issue, but it may be a good idea to build a platform to set the barrels on. I have bulit one in the past with some 4x4s and 2x6s to avoid direct contact with the floor.
