This is frustrating. Came to a decision though. Going to drive to Charlottesville and pick up 5 Eagles today. It's a one hour drive each way but it will save me $250 in APMEX premiums. Next week I will do the same. I figure that by buying them 5 at a time rather than all at once I will win some and lose some. Anyone else think this is a viable plan?

if it were me i would save some fiat for the possibility that they pull the same stunt during the next options expiration week

Screw online buying for bullion!! Gather up some FRN'S and make a day of it.
Coin shows are perfect for this, take the wife unit out to dinner while you are at it.
I hate seeing somebody making work out of what ought to be a hell of a lot of fun!
I know guys I won't go fishing with for that very reason, but thats another story.....

So are you suggesting to walk around a coin show with like $20K in pocket?

Hell yea!! Last show I was at (six months back) I watched a guy walking around with a money bag sit down and buy 20+ 1oz GAEs (POG was $1500ish). Watched him count out over $30K. I saw him all morning with that bag in hand. He promptly left after getting his gold though.

buy on ebay, its cheaper and you dont have to leave the house. its the way i buy because i never leave my house.
factor in 4 gallons of gas into the cost of the 5oz and it aint cheap, unless your going into town for milk then i wouldn't bother.

I don't have that luxury at the moment but hell yes!
The most I brought to a coin show was $5500 and the wife unit and I had a ball spending it!
We bought sovereigns, helvetias, krugerrands and gold luner dogs. My wife decided she loved gold coins with dogs on them.
The gold took up less room in my pocket than the FRN's did.~~:w00t:

If you're walking around in a public setting, wheeling out a few thousand and buying gold, you'll also be carrying a firearm. It seems to me very risky with all that cash and PM coins in a public setting. I liken it to a person walking around loaded up with a lot gold jewelry. I saw somewhere that in the LA Times, there's an article telling folks not to wear gold in public. They're probably talking about "in da hood".though.
I just remember about 20 years ago baseball cards were in vogue. I would go to shows with several hundred in my pocket. I always felt somewhat nervous.

If the coin show is in some crime riddled sh!thole go to a different one.
This really isn't that difficult.

Sit tight Cisco. You'll get your chance. Maybe not next week or the next, but who knows. One thing you can bet on is that the coming election year will breed volatility. The public is going to go through periods of uneasiness mixed with brief flares of optimism. There's going to be so much BS being slung that J6P can't help but be confused, and their confusion is your best ally when you have a clearer view of the big picture.

Its common for me to carry 10k to a coin show.......i have never felt at risk in the coin show and i am careful about time of day and where i park etc.

No kidding. I bet at least half the people at a large show have at least $2000 on them. The other half probably have much more. I casually observed a guy buying a *stack* of Saints with cash at the last show. He was dressed in what I would consider to be yard clothes and definitely didn't look like a 'target'. Bring a small backpack or something similar if you're nervous about having to pull a wad of cash out of your pocket to count it. That way you can count the cash in the bag and no one around you will know for certain what you're doing. Lastly the show I was at the other day had two or more armed policemen at every door so I wouldn't be worried about security inside.

My favorite coin show is in March in a casino, no worries around there!

So I missed THE dip once again.
Really the market needs to be looked at and thought of in this way.....
So I missed A dip once again.
Really there are constant dips and rises, it's not like there is, was or will be only one. Average in and buy the weakness when it presents itself. When and how you make the transactions is a matter of personal choice and a secondary consideration. IMHO

I did read it, Lancers, and I thank you for the link. I now have Jim Sinclairs site on my Favorites. I stopped into my local dealers today and bought everything he had. Fortunately (I think), that wasn't much. He had one one ounce Eagle, one half ounce Eagle, and one quarter ounce Eagle. The premiums weren't that bad on the fractionals and I've always sort of wanted some fractionals anyway so I went for it. He did have one special one ounce Eagle that was high relief or something but I didn't need to pay the premium for that for my needs so I passed. Anyhow, this satisfied my craving for more gold for a little so now I can sit back and wait for a better buying op.

I snagged the ounce for $1782 but my coin shop charges a 4% premium on Eagles. He gets 3.3% for Maples and an even 3% for Krugerrands and bars. Still, the itch has been scratched. For now.

I heard that, sometimes I think I'm better off buying fractional twice a month than saving up and getting an oz once in a while.

Twenty is my immediate goal. However, after listening to you guys I decided to get five a week for four weeks. I went down there today with every intention of coming home with five ounces. One and three quarter ounces was all they had, unless you count that special commemorative thing he had. Fancy display case, but at the end of the day, it's still just an ounce of pure gold. I'm trying to stack weight, not get fancy.
if you continuously wait for the bottom on the expectation that tomorrow will be lower than today, you'll always miss the dip. No one can expect to buy at the bottom unless they have insider information...
If you really must buy, you should buy online.

Gold is traditionally strong during Fall and Winter, and I don't think this year will be any different...especially this year! Buying 5 at a time over 4 weeks is fine if that makes you comfortable. Personally, when I decide to buy, I make my move and I'm done with it.
When I carry large sums of cash, I wear a money belt under my clothes. Somebody would have to strip me down to get it. It has worked for me traveling in Mexico, Central America, and South America (also Europe and the US)...even while being hassled by cops and/or attempted pick pocketing's.
