I have been thinking about buying some freeze dryed vegetables in #10 tins. I see on many forums people have been buying Mountain House brand. I told my wife and showed her the prices listed in various places on the internet. They average between 20 and 25 dollars a can. She told me Walmart has a section in their store with #10 cans with a different brand. That average from 10-18 dollars a can. I just want opinions on the quality. Has anyone compared the two?

Attempt to get a sample of the "off-brand" stuff, and try it. Otherwise, stick with Mountain House.

If it's freeze-dried, there shouldn't be that much difference between manufacturers?
Is MH supplying product to WalMart/Costco/etc, under custom labels?
Just wonderin',

My wife bought a can of eggs and a can of dry buttermilk at walmart they were distributed not made by a company in Utah. After she bought them I thought I would check. Too many things at Walmart come from China. Now I am thinking these may be dehydrated instead of freeze dried because the price is less. I will have to read the can closer in the morning.

Check-however keep my attitude developed in stages.Dehyd cheaper, not as good tasting as freeze dried-but when I was hungry, real hungry the only diff was texture, taste same.If planning to eat down the stores, buy freeze dried as it tastes the best on a day to day basis. If planning on meltdown scenario and not touching the stores until called upon, buy deyd.Best advice-buy buy here and there, mix and match-but buy.Prices up 10-15% since last year, what is bought today for $5.86-will bring double in meltdown scenario.Better than PM's?

That's only theoretical. There are a variety of factors that could make one freeze-dried meal delicious, and another nasty. For example, if the original produce is crap, the end result will be crap, even if the technological process is identical.

Considering that OFD is having a hard time keeping up with demand, I'd be surprised if they'd supply to WM, at least at this time.

I went to the ofd web site and they claim they are making for walmart and costco so I went to costco web site and they said t hey were out of stock online. I haven't been to the local stores at all yet. My wife did go to walmart and got another brand I have heard the OFD stuff is not in the grocery section it is in sporting goods. I will check. Thanks for all your helpful posts.
