More info please.
Dealer, city, State?
What's the reason given? Is the store building a mailing list? Or is this mandated by a law?
Cash is still king hereabouts. (well, gold is king, silver is queen, copper is retarded little stepchild but you know what I mean)

Jules Karp Coins in New York City - one of the bigger (long time) dealers in NYC. I've been dealing with the main guy for several years... but in the last few, he's gone missing. So the people he brought in look rather medicated.
In NY, we have the $1k tax free rule (as with other States). Even $1k in cash didn't deter them from documenting every little thing. They said it was store policy... well, it's recent store policy cause they never did that before.
Too bad. They lost a 10+ year customer. I will never go back again.
I also asked if they were interested in a trade - the answer was, "You have to buy from us and we have to buy from you." So I guess the answer was "no". :y:

That sucks GsM. Maybe to far for you but out on Long Island there is a twice monthly coin show where you can buy and sell.

Was the ID taken at the point of sale or was it required to get buzzed into the building?

No. Not since I have been going there since 1995. But of course now that everyone in America is a suspect these days I wouldn't be surprised if one day it happens.

Well... both. It's a corporate building so you have to flash ID to get past the reception desk.
But at point of sale too.

Long Island Expressway to route 110 south (exit 49). Go south around 4 miles and you will see a coin show sign on your left in front of a commercial building. 2nd and 4th Sunday of every month. So this Sunday the show is on. 8 am to around 2 pm.

Great info Andial, I'm on Rt. 110 all the time but I never noticed it. I'm new to all this so that was a real big nugget for me. Thanks for the tip
