Would like to get some exposure to mining stocks. Wondering if it is worth the effort to research. After the whole MF Global crap, is anyone safe investing in the stock market? There seems to be a consensus that GLD and SLV do not have the PM's they say they have. What about mining stock ETF's? Do they have the underlying stocks they say they have? Thank you in advance for helpful guidance.

You might want to just get some of your buddies together and let them take turns beating you in the head. It will be more fun and cost you less money.

If you want to 'play' the market, you could work ETF's GDX (miners) and GDXJ (junior miners). They're 'down' at the moment, but my reading suggests that the big boys will be looking to acquire gold (lots of it) and they'll start buying up the juniors. Juniors do the risky exploration where the big boys don't.
SPDR gold trust = GLD
MV miners = GDX
MV jr. miners = GDXJ
