Any takers?
Making American History Coin and Currency Set (TA8)
Price: $72.95
This product will be available for sale
on August 7, 2012 at 12:00 Noon (ET).
I cannot see this being a huge seller, as it will be expensive for a proof, and there's already 250k of these things being minted for the 2012-s sets. Most of the profit opportunity is with the 2012 set. I'd guess mintage won't be more than 50k. just my SWAG.

Not at that price! I think the Mint is getting too greedy with some of the prices they set.

So nobody is going to buy any of these to get the S proof for $68 vs $75 in the SF set?
Looks like potentially there could be 100K more S coins if they sell them all:
Order Information:
Initial production of the Making American History Set is 50,000 sets. The established production limit for this product is no more than 100,000 units, based on the availability of the Series 2009 $5 notes that begin serialization with the number "150."

I'm buying a set or two solely because I have a little one coming next month (unless he decides to come sooner) and I want to have a stash of 2012 coins/bullion to give him when he's old enough to appreciate them. If I didn't have a child on the way I would probably steer clear of this set as you're essentially paying over 2x melt for just the S proof. Granted that's not a bad thing as even picked over random date ASE proofs will always sell for 1.5x melt or more, but there really isn't a lot of upside with this set unless collectors just go goo-goo for gaa-gaa over San Fran coins. The fact it's an S proof is worth a premium so if you enjoy modern mint stuff it can't hurt to pick up a set or two, but I wouldn't fill the credit card up with these for flipping purposes :).
The 'S' proof is special, but IMO the best way to play it is to buy the 2012 San Fran set on the cheap since you're getting a revPr in that set :).

This is what I was wondering. There seems to be no interest in this set even with the better price on the S proof - but I may get one myself since my other raw S proofs are backordered until 10/31. Now watch these sets get shipped first...
This set is not going to sell, especially with the 2012 sets currently showing price weakness.

I don't agree the the cost or value of the coins in the SF set are split equally. You can't get near as much for the regular proof as the reverse proof on Ebay. So I think you are paying less than $68 for the regular proof on the set.

I have some collectable currency, silver certificates, etc., but none graded and only know the ballpark values via ebay sales.

I have no plans to buy this set, but for anyone buying I'd wait. Wait till Silvertowne have them graded MS70 and pay the little bit extra.

The mint really passed up an opportunity to take as much from the collector community by not producing a P proof to go along with the S and W.
Next year, as they have run out of time to do another boneheaded move this year, they will have the AllMint Proof and Burnished set - where they produce proofs, reverse proofs and burnished uncs from each mint. They will even do a special run from Carson City to show off the fine craft work of placing two little Cs in the mint mark location.
And later in 2013, they will produce the AllMint bullion series with 4 bullion UNC pieces, with no mint marks, promised to be produced by each mint (Philly, SanFran, Denver and WestPoint) at a special price of just $66 each. These can be directly sent to PCGS or NGC where they will produce the special edition inserts identifying the original mints. Note that PCGS will return the coins unslabbed if the coins separate from their special edition holder as they will not be sure which coin came from which mint.

I just ordered two sets and will return the lesser of the two when they arrive. I just wanted one for the little one as the premium on the set does not make sense from an investing or flipping perspective. The proof itself is potentially a long term winner, but the San Fran sets are clearly the best way to play them.

I tried to order one with a Garfield FS Unc and it suspended the whole order...guess I missed that boat, but not really into collecting those anyway, so it would have just been for a flip. I'll probably order a SSB gold unc with it.

I decided to purchase one just for fun. Did anyone elses total for each set come to $17.69 plus shipping?:hmmmm2: I know they adjust prices as soon as it ships but even my CC shows that my total charge was $22.64.
If this error does follow thru, it will be my first Snag/WTF!!:cheerful:
Wish me luck.

Someone else said the same thing on another forum. Mine displayed at full price (I bought at 12:10EST) and the pending charge against my bank account reflects the same. I'll cross my fingers for you though and hope you scored a set for less than melt :D!

Yeah, I should have used a little emoticon - but there is a 24% chance that they will do something like this so I figured I would be on record :D

So, last week I received my cancellation notice from the mint on my $22 set. They also decided to call me to see if I would purchase the set by phone.
No snag just a WTF!

psh! you can get that pacemaker later. just hook up a cassio wristwatch and some ducttape to the ole ticker, throw in some apple cider vinegar, and you're good to go. use that money for things you really need like gold.
