Hi, I'm trying to read some of the existing threads since I figure you've already covered a lot of topics already. I read a bunch about Gold IRAs and I've decided that's not for me. The thing I'm trying to research next is owning mining stocks or any other types of stocks that are PM related.
My situation is that most of my assets are self-directed stock trading accounts. Even most of my ROTH IRA money is in a self-directed account where I buy individual stocks. The info I'm looking for is to...
1) get a list of stocks PM related
2) get recommendations on what other people think are the better stocks and why
3) get a feel for the past, present and future of these stocks
I'll just throw that out there. Precious Metals are a new field for me, so I need to do a lot of homework before I buy any of these stocks. I'm not planning to buy so much physical silver to satisfy my interest, so I want to buy stocks to increase my exposure especially in my IRA stock account.
Thanks for any help!

First of all, WADR, keep reading.
"Gold Ira"? There is nothing wrong, basically, with slv and gld (or the inverse zsl and gll) except if your're big enough to stand for delivery. Of course someday in the "future" you will want to convert to something else (real estate, etc). The rap on the etf's is usually that you can't convert to bullion unless you're a really big guy. If you're that guy you probably wouldn't be here, just like most of the rest of us.
Miners, be very carefull, IMHO. Safest are the big three or four and royalty companies, but they seem to all have so I'm not mentioning names. DYODD It's not rocket science that there will be hugh amounts of money made by some with the miners, we will all be reading the newsletters in the future. However, the question is risk. How much can you stomach to lose until you luckily find the winners. You've picked the most fertile mine field to walk in that I can think of.
That being said it is your retirement account and you need to first determine your own risk and reward factor. Do you have the time to be taking the risks? Time to recover from loses?
Don't know if you're a "trader", but my bottom line for you would be to #1 buy what you can hold (bullion, coins, scrap) and #2 buy the etf's with a "PLAN". Try to resit buying dips and peaks to start out. If you believe PMs are going to go up from here, just keep buying however you are able. Home runs don't come easy.
All the best!

The link did not work. Use this to find the HUI & XAU. https://www.google.com/search?q=xau+index+components&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a
A good site to investigate PM stocks: http://miningalmanac.com/

stocks = digital / paper promises
buy something PHYSICAL you can hold in your own hand
if you don't hold it, you don't own it

It's possible that many shares are non official, being generated via the naked shorting mechanism.
No one seems to know what % of the market is acutual shares.
The CEO of overstock.com said that it's hard to get the stock price up, if the shares circulating are not shares that he issued.
