We had a thread a while back where we talked about hobo nickels and a few of us shared pics. I was at a major coin show about six months ago now and talked to a guy who was carving a hobo nickel at the show. A lot of the vintage ones are truly beautiful, but the good ones are over $100 each and I just refuse to pay that for a non-PM coin :p. Still at some point I'm sure I'll break down eventually and buy at least one real nice one just to have it. Even better would be finding a cool one with additional wear for a few bucks that I could carry daily :D. Anyway I just found the article below and although a lot of the examples are really crude, there are a few great ones in the lot to be sure. If you own any, please post pics!!!

Did you ever wonder what our currency might look like if aliens invaded our planet and for some strange reason decided to integrate into our culture rather than destroying us all? This selection of extra terrestrial coins includes some of the most intriguing hobo nickels on Earth. If you’re not familiar, hobo nickels are any coin-not just nickels- of which the original carvings have been altered.
The practice of defacing coins dates back as early as the 1750′s when a man would make a “love token” for his lady by smoothing the coin and adding their initials. The art of hobo nickeling had a surge of popularity after the release of the Buffalo nickel since the large Indian head offered the perfect amount of space for creating a new scene and people had a lot of time on their hands due to the lack of jobs during the Great Depression.

This coin defacing form of folk art is so popular that there is even an Original Hobo Nickel Society. The collection of skull hobo nickels on Atomik was an inspiration to dig deeper and find out more about the hobo hobby which led to this alien collection. It would be pretty creepy/awesome to receive one of these unearthly coins as change! To learn more about hobo nickels, check out the mini lesson at the end from Joe Paonessa’s course: Coin Carving 101.

I started collecting Hobo Nickels in September 2010 and even though I have not bought a hobo nickel in a long while, I still will collect the ones that I like at the "right price" when I have some extra FRNs left over. My goal is to fill up a Whiteman album with hobo nickels. I also do not blame you in that I do not want to pay too much for a non-PM coin. The most that I paid for mine was $40.00. As I have mentioned, I have not been buying them for a while because I have been concentrating on buying SABs.

I also heard of the Hobo Nickel Society but I am not a member of it. There was a coin show that I went to a while ago and there was a person that represented the Hobo Nickel Society and we spoke for a while. According to what this person said, there are some hobo nickels that cost as much as $4000 and those are the "Bo" (George Washington "Bo" Hughes) and "Bert" (Bertram “Bert” Wiegand).

Most of the Hobo Nickels that I have are the "modern" Hobo Nickels and I have a few that were done by Keith Pedersen and John F Press (J Press).

Here are some of the ones that I have:

My very first Hobo Nickel that I bought and I bought this from a LCS:

Here are some others that I bought and ebay and at some coin shows:

I have more Hobo nickels than the ones that I posted pictures of but those are some of my favorite ones.

Is that done on a war nickle. If so, it's pretty appropriate for you, a silver nickle with a dog on it!
We all know that silver is a "dog". :)

Nope. It was done on a regular 1936 Buffalo Nickel. I like this Hobo nickel a lot, however, I will have to say that silver is no longer a DOG. Silver is now an "ex-DOG" and Facebook stock is now the new DOG. :)

I've bid on several but the really nice ones always go higher than I'm willing to spend. Looks like it might be a neat hobby. What would the necessary tools be? I assume a hammer, some engraving gouges, punches, jewelers files, a dremel tool, and an anvil or vice? What do they use to hold the coin while they work it?

Fascinating, looks like he's been playing in Area 51 too much.

I like these better than the originals. KINDA "demonizes" the money in a artful way.

Too true.

I think that you are right in that the most modern tools and machinery to carve them out. I suspect that the older hobo nickels were carved out by using some handmade tools. Just a guess on my part. A lot of the Hobo nickel art work looks very nice IMO.
