Found these interesting items while prospecting a box today. Not sure how the Franklin toned that way; there is no residue of any kind on the surface. The stripes are just straight-up darker tones than the rest of the coin. The back is your normal attractive solid gold-toning. As for the Rupee, I guess I'm okay that I was shorted $.50 in that roll.

Is that Rupee roughly the same size as a half?

Good find! Looks like someone raided Grampa's coin collection to spend those coins before they ended in the roll. This link says the Rupee is a "silver coin", but doesn't give details:

One guy is trying to sell one of those Rupee coins for 60 Euro (including S&H) on eBay, and his photo isn't nearly as good as yours:

Almost exactly the same size. A US Half is 30.6mm, the Rupee is 30.5mm. When stacked together, you can't physically tell the difference.

I wish the Franklin photo came out as nicely; it's really quite striking with shiny gold toning and those "tiger stripes". After seeing TomD's photos, I don't see why I even try.

As for the rupee, it is actually .917 silver. Here's a link that has details: http://en.numista.com/catalogue/pieces3722.html

One of my favorite finds was a Bahama fifty cents piece that was the only silver in a roll of halves I got from a local bank when I first started prospecting. Was really surprised when it showed itself among the dirty Kennedy's.

This picture is not the coin I found, but one just like it. I still have it in the pond down the road.
