Just quickly searching the net I found these. Are these good survival prep candles? Anyone know of a better place?
I guess I would need to order some plates that go underneath it to, or some kind of glass jar. What do you recommend?

i just get my candles from any dollar store ( 10 cheapo candles for $1 )
i'm still amazed by people buying 5 " SURVIVAL " candles for $4.99
or make your own candles with cooking oil

Candles are awfully smoky. I am told that cooking oil candles are much better. Also a lot cheaper.
I got a bunch at a yard sale cheap.
But they are not the cheapest way to get lite. The absolutely cheapest and safest is one of these 4D MagLite with a low powered LED module. (Nite-IZe). It's very dim but runs for 100 hours. You can remove the head for a flood lite.
Mini Mag can also take NiteIze conversion and run on AA cells forever. Think 40 hours.

If you have the money, buy or make your own bees wax candles.

Does anyone know if rancid oil burns just as well? Seems like a use for old vegetable oil.

As mentioned, Garage Sales! I can't tell you how many boxes and boxes of candles I have from garage sales. Don' tget me wrong there's always someone with a barely lit 3-wick that wants $12 for it. But there's lots of ugly ones, christmas and halloween ones that they practically give away. Show up at about 12:30 and offer a $1 for the entire box.
I emlt most of them into coffee can/tuna can candles.

I have a couple clay olive oil "lamps" similar to the ones at the link below. Similar to ordinary candles, they don't produce much light, but these do burn hot and produce a good amount of heat for one wick. Supposedly olive oil burns hotter and cleaner than ordinary wax candles, which I tend to believe anecdotally. A good potter should be able to make these anywhere, but I've never seen them locally.

Rancid oil burns rancidly. :) Best used outdoors.
Between thrift stores and yard sales I have more candles than I need, very cheaply.

etc, you could solar charge the batteries, so that sounds great.

Would you post more info or links if you get time?

IKEA, that Swedish place. Can get like 500 candles for $10. They burn all night those things with very little smoke.
