LAS VEGAS -- At this point, no Las Vegan will believe the city has landed a professional basketball team until they are sitting courtside at the inaugural game.

You will literally have to be there in person, and even then you might question your lying eyes.

That’s how far it’s gotten. For years we’ve been teased by everyone from the league officials who spoke highly of our city, to the would-be owners groups who vow that all it takes is a state-of-the-art sports arena to draw a team to southern Nevada.

For those who say the speculation exists only within the Las Vegas community, take a gander at Thursday’s Detroit Free Press, and its headline “Could Pistons Be Target Of Vegas Developer?”

“While Pistons prospects display their talents in the Las Vegas Summer League, there may be a backroom move afoot to bring the Pistons, or another NBA franchise, to the Las Vegas Strip – permanently,” the article states.

It continues, “Karen Davidson, who inherited the Pistons when her husband, Bill Davidson, died last year, has said she expects to sell the team within the next few months.”

There you have it folks, add Karen Davidson to your memory banks for the next conversation you’re having with a friend about our city’s NBA hopes.

Or will it be some other team? The article states that as many as six franchises could be sold in the near future. Will one of them pick Las Vegas as their next destination?

It’s fun to speculate, but the bottom line is that without a place to play, there will be no NBA in Las Vegas.

Even those behind the proposed Silver State Arena on the Strip know that unless you build it, they won’t come.

Chris Milam of International Development Management made headlines this week when he said an NBA franchise already had Las Vegas on its radar and was ready to move. He even told the Las Vegas Sun a team was “under contract” if all the pieces fell into place.

Translation: Clark County needs an arena.

In a statement to FOX5, Milam said, “It is our hope that this may have an impact on the opinion of the Clark County Commission with respect to their support for the project.”

Translation: Taxpayers may need to foot part of the bill.

The NBA denied Milam’s “under contract” statement, but that won’t slow the debate over whether public money should be used in the pursuit of a team.

We’re not the first community to face that decision, and history is filled with stories of happiness and regret when it comes to taxpayer-funded sports venues.
