it's relative new but has a long history going back years. classic game but this version is amazing.

i'm playing as america and today i'm 270 turns into it. 1987 and just started researching the manhatten project. rather safe than sorry as i only have a small defensive "militia" in each city. most other games i've been a hellish war-monger.

this time, i've decided to stay out of foriegn entanglements. i built the map, so i have one continent and europe has thiers across the sea. i am however an expansionist nation, grabbing every (very plentifully added) resource on the continent through contant city building.
back in the 1800s, England landed on the NE coast and built a small town. first i told her not to build near my settlements and she refused. i told them to take a hike or else, but she got all snotty and refused to surrender the town.
i ended up having to declare war and took the city with a handful of men carrying rifles, but didnt attack her euro cities in retaliation. 7 years later, she begged for peace, gave me a lump sum of gold and a yearly tribute of gold for 25 years.

there was war in europe a few years after that and arabia was conquered by someone i havent seen yet. maybe russia or china. england is too broke to wage war for some reason

so now my next plan is to build up my gold reserves and create a naval force. i have a few subs heading east over that vast ocean, but i think it might be a good idea to build a carrier battle fleet over there. a show of power in that region might keep them from trying anything in the future.
i might even have to change my policies and intervene in whoever is waging war there. i'd hate for one nation to take over that entire continent. i could fund a resistance or step in at last resort. america must remain the leader of the free world after all.

anyway...plenty of time on my hands as you can see and i dont expect replies lol, but its always interesting to see how art imitates life sometimes. current events are always my inspiration for war games and i like to write about it once in a while. :p

I think it still needs some play balancing - there are no slider bars to shift culture/finance/research - so with a large empire you are continually bankrupt (with the negative effects on happiness and cannot upgrade existing units).

I found I became addicted to golden ages to bypass this.

there are a couple of mods - the clock one is crucial (umm, just ... one ... more.... turn!) - Some more balancing needs to occur when playing on huge/large settings. I think that naval movement in particular is an issue - crossing a 60 tile ocean at 4 tiles per turn is silly - it becomes impossible to wage any kind of war.

The stack of doom is gone - makes wars much more interesting - you really have to plan to have ranged weapons.

Still have not figured out how city states/your cities can demand a resource which has not been discovered yet! (i.e., Mogolian peasants never demanded whales in the 3rd century AD).

Played a couple of times - but will wait a while to see how the play balancing mods come out.

just my $0.02

I got addicted to the original Civ in 1994, but there were enough problems in its execution that I gave up on it. A few months ago, however, I downloaded the updated and free version of FreeCiv (http://freeciv.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page), and that original addiction returned with a vengeance! It is highly recommended for anyone who enjoys computer games that are based on thought rather than speed.

OMG...people on the computer section. whoa.

you were right on the gold issue. i thought i had placed more than plenty of gold on my continent along with the other couple needful things, but it's turn 320 and i'm down to 101 gold per turn and i've had to delay my ambitions a few times while i searched for patched of gold to settle near. then i ran out of gold to find.

i've only had one battle (with the english city way back when) but it seemed to work out good. its a nice trade off. but that vast ocean has now become a problem. it's too damn vast! in 2010 (turn 291), germany went after the weaker england. he was probably the one that killed off arabia. before i could step in and perhaps take some land or negotiate with a threat, england was gone. it's just me vs germany now. but he's oddly weak. next time i'll up the difficulty from 2. lol.

now all i have over there are a few cities with a small defense force of tanks and misc. it took ages to build up my navy and nuclear subs and it looks like it will be a while before the ground troops arive in europe. the carriers and other missile and nuke related ships will arive first , so it appears i'll be softening up the defenses or simply turning it into a wastland before the boots are on the ground. it shall be a suprise though. germany looks a bit pissed, but he hasnt declared war. :cool1:

are you saying i'm going to run out of turns eventually??? how many do you get?

Gaming was fun, when I was younger.

p.s. The only reason I posted was to stop seeing the other post gleeming about someone angry about maleware.

Carry on.
