You younger guys probably don't understand how central to our existence we old farts consider the land line. But with the price on my landline creeping at near $65/month, including the uncountable parasitic Fed & State taxes for a line + long distance, I've been eying cheaper alternatives.

I know a lot of people are existing on cell only but several negative elements have kept me from that, things like one handset only, misplacing the handset, breaking the handset and several other variations. I thought that I had the ideal solution with the latest version of Magic Jack but a year's experience with that has convinced me that it is close but not quite ready for prime time. There is the occasional voice quality issue and the occasional downtime due to DSL service but the killer for me is the hardware reliability. In 15 months I had to replace the hardware twice under warranty but with a week or better downtime each time. The price is damn sure right at $30 a year including voice mail, caller id, and continental long distance. I still have and will maintain my Magic Jack line for the times the wife is camped out on the main line + to use as a fax line. Also with Magic Jack, if you're out of town, just take the 2-packs-of-gum-sized hardware with you and plug it into your computer, jack a phone in it and you have your home line with you anywhere. Like Skype I guess.

The choice that finally lured me away from ATT is the Verizon/Straight Talk home phone. It works over the Verizon cell phone network and should be more reliable than my phone line connection down here in hurricane country. It consists of a base unit that connects to the cellphone network and has two telephone output jacks in the back. I've got a cordless base connected to that with remotes over the house. I've had it for two months now and cannot tell the difference in sound quality from the older wired phone network. You can port your existing number to it. Don't worry about minutes, unlimited continent wide time.

You can buy the equipment and pay for the service either through Verizon or Straight Talk, I chose Straight Talk because they required no contract. Verizon buries the equipment cost in the monthly fee but charges a lot more per month and requires a contract. Run the numbers for two years and it's a lot cheaper with ST. If you should need it, there is probably better customer service through Verizon.

The equipment costs $100 one time and the service is $15/month. And, like I said, the functionality and voice quality is indistinguishable from the ATT land line. There is also voice mail, caller ID, 3-way, call forwarding, etc, etc.

I still get DSL from ATT but it is the only service that I get from them. Funny thing is that since my old tele # got ported to Verizon, my DSL had to be reinstallled under a new #. ATT gave me the introductory rate of $19.99/month for a year for their fastest DSL which was costing me $50/month. So for the next year I'll have a $75/month reduction and "only" $50 after that.

$600 bucks a year here and $600 a year there, sooner or later it adds up.

I've had a no contract cell phone for about 4 years with Straight Talk for $30/month with no problems.
