I'm looking to pick up a pair of snowshoes for general hiking? I'm looking for some that are durable and will last quite a long time. Does anybody have any recommendations? I will be walking on general flat land. thanks

I've been snowshoeing for 10+ years. IMHO there isn't much difference in modern aluminum snowshoes for recreational use. If you're going for the Olympic team, sure, you'll want super-ultra high-performance shoes (at a super-high price).
Just look for a mid-range shoe built for your size and weight. In my area, even Waldo-mart sells a reasonably good shoe for a little under $100. But I'd look to step up from there. Go to a real sporting goods store. No need to spend over $150 IMHO.
Have fun!.

I agree Davy.
Mid range aluminun will accomodate a little climbing and challenge but more in particular they are great for general all around comfortable use which promotes the adventure. At this time of year there aught to be some sales clearing last year stock. (my case) Also I have wood-gut which is another experience. These can be found at an occasional garage sale such (my case also), hardly used for $10.
One last thing, depending on you situation buy a set of female (assuming your a male) for the companionship. I have male-female aluminum mid range and male -female wood gut. It is exhilarating and great cardio.
The aluminium ones are good enough for a leisurely pace and occasional use. They won't stand up to regular use carrying or pulling weight.

we have several different types of snowshoes,
bearpaws for brush / woods hiking / light snow
but for deep snow
I really like the military issue magnesium frame shoes
that have coated steel cable webbing. They are almost indestructible,
very light weight and can be purchased on Ebay for about $35.00 per pair (or less if you search for a better deal). (military probably spent hundreds for these decommissioned snow shoes)

Thanks for the review of the USGI shoes, I have wondered for years if they were good kit
Thanks everybody for your advice. I'll be picking some up soon. I found some of those magnesium snowshoes as well as others at sportsmansguide. Ill probably pick up the aluminum ones and the military ones.
TCC,
I had to laugh at your comment. The real reason I am buying some is because I meet a girl a few months ago and she loves to snowshoe. So, I figure it would make a couple good dates.
