Default ASE purchase....... Deal or no deal (key coins?)

    Working on a craigslist purchase.
A guy has 40 ASE coins to sell at $30. a piece.
    $1200. total must buy all.
    He says "some are graded"
Not sure what that means yet.

I will probably buy that at spot plus a buck for eagles.

He also has what he calls "a complete set" at $999.00 for 28 coins.

    What does that mean?
are there key coins that would make that worth it?

I'd call him, go see what he has.

    Ok,
    He has now replied:
9 of the forty would be graded ICG ms 69 in plastic slabs.
Nothing special, but seems fair at $30 a pop.

I think I'll do that deal & see what the "set" is while there.
This is my first human to human (non shop) purchase. If I don't come back send flowers....

ms69 means nothing really. an ounce is an ounce. If you are not close enough to visit the bullion can he send detailed pics?

Just me but I would buy nothing for that much money from a stranger without proofs.

I'd take it. a buck fitty over spot for eagles is a screamer.

    The set is just 1986-2010, with every year included. 24*30 + ~50 (for the 1996) = $770, so $999 isn't worth it.

    Ok, Been there, did that,
    Bought these:

Name:	Silver Eagles 001.JPG
Views:	70
Size:	112.0 KB
ID:	5685

    Paid $1200 (40) at $30.00 each
    (9) slabbed
    (1) tube of (20) 2010
    (11) misc year.

Now, back to the "book of eagles"

    The set is just 1986-2010, with every year included. 24*30 + ~50 (for the 1996) = $770, so $999 isn't worth it.
The book contains all years, plus an extra 1996, plus (3) W mintmark coins.
    (28) total coins.
In the world of semi-numis, is that closer to worth it?

    Not a bad day's work!

Not sure about the book. I guess it would be cool to have, but I don't know that I'd pay anything additional simply for being an assembled set. Seems like the seller want's to factor than in for an extra $100. Maybe try offering $900? Oh, and check condition on the 1996's... no sense paying extra for them if they're beat up.

Looking to Ebay closed listings, the w's don't seem to sell for anymore than other eagles.
    Raw 1996's are selling for $40. - $44.
All coins in the book looked nice, but I think I'll pass.
In fact, if silver touches $35. I think I'll try & flip the slabbed guys.
    Tubes are more cool........

Was thinking of suggesting the same on the slabs, but didn't want to burst your bubble if you thought they were something. My impression of ICG is strictly for show. All the better for you if someone will pay a bit more because of it! Frankly, I prefer raw coins... but, on anything that really deserves to be slabbed, PCGS or NGC are the only ways to fly.

At current prices you have done real well.

Apmex is getting a minimum of $31.29 per eagle and that is if you buy 1,000.

    Congratulations.
