There was a sign at Wendy's that said " tomato slice by request only due to cold winter" or something along those lines. I live in Florida so not sure if any one else has seen the signs at Wendy's in your area.

They have had those signs out in my state (Indiana) for the last couple of years (sporadically).

Because of the freezing weather a few weeks ago in Northern Mexico, 80-100 of the veggie crop was wiped out. Tomatoes in our local store are approaching $4.00 a pound. A friend who operates our favorite restaurant told us Sunday that bell peppers have increased in price 400%.
Those economics are behind the Wendy's sign I am sure.

Restaurant owner here; it getting this way across the board/so far most increase in bread products but lettuce and tomato are sky high, too. This is not the first time. Several years ago we had to surcharge lettuce and tomatoes on our steak sandwich. When beef prices catch up with feed cost we are going to have to seriously rethink menu strategy. Probably the first thing we'll do is surcharge 3% CC use back to consumer but this in itself will not be enough as wholesale prices are beginning to hit hard/already up 10% YTD. Approximately 75% of sales are paid by CC's.

Given what passes for a "fresh tomato" at most fast food places, Wendy's is actually doing you a favor.

Fascinating. There's no shortage or price rise in produce in Western Canada. Prices vary widely between stores, but that's normal. Tomatoes are about $1.69/lb. Celery $.79/lb. A lot of veggies are grown locally in greenhouses. Baby carrots from USA are $1.50/lb. Potatoes $1.69/5 lbs. Red seedless grapes $1.49/lb. Milk went up recently. $4.00/gal.
Whatever happened to paying cash for the small stuff? Are plastic users unaware of the transaction fees? Yikes.

Just saw the same Wendy's sign here in SC. I wonder if catsup, pizza sauce and salsa are next?
they can keep that cardboard slice of whats called a tomato. Monsanto ?
IF YA CANT DAZZLE THEM WITH BRILLIANCE BAFFLE THEM WITH BULLsh!t.
we are not blessed with a wendy's here but we do have a Mc Dump, I cant eat it goes through me like crap through a goose! but tomatoes are in short supply here, I will have to wait this summer for fresh out the garden but my canned tomatoes from last year are yummy!
Grow my own chillie plants in plastic self-watering pots, and I don't really eat them that much at home. Have two plants. They are the easiest thing in the world to look after, just give them the occasional watering, well drained soil, and every so often do a deep watering with two pinches of nitrophoska slow-release fertilizer pellets. They don't mind hot weather, slugs/snails do bad thing to their leaves tho.
They grow like weeds, I neglected one plant and it died, so I just kept watering it to see what would happen, and 10 sprang up in it's place from the seed pods!

I've seen those signs in the northeast every so often too. Maybe they are just cheap.
Shoot, yall think that's bad, I stopped at Mickey Ds down here in South Fl and they asked me if I wanted chicken on my chicken sandwich.
its amazing that they won't give you a tomato slice, which you damn well paid for . . . Jut try and ask them to take the price of the tomato off the sandwich total. I bet ya they won't. So Basically, they're been charging for tomato slices they don't provide. PURE PROFIT!
an actual real vine grown tomato at a fast food place is non exestant they use hybrid hot house or their similar.... probably a product of MONSANTO.

I have a friend in Wellington CO who runs 5 hot houses, growing cukes and tomatoes. I chatted w him yesterday, he said hes making a killing, the price he gets has doubled in the past week, so there is a silver lining.

Must be all that global warming, ah, I mean global dimming, oh wait, I believe it's now just referred to as climate change, with "change" defined to mean whatever happens with the climate over the next X years (not to be confused with "Hope and Change", of course)....man, I'm confused by all this greenhouse emissions stuff, can someone call Al Gore at Kleiner-Perkins and get some explanation? Never mind, I forgot, he is vacationing at his condo on the beach at Saint Regis...But, wait, if Al Gore bought a condo on the beach, than that means the sea level......ah, nevermind, this stuff is really confusing, thank GOD the socialists have it all figured out...otherwise, us dumb ole' free marketers might never find our way.
Are the burgers any good at Wendy's? All I've ever eaten there was Chili and Fries.
Whole damn world is panicing over food, grow your own its not that hard.
