Default Would you ever sell your gold for silver?

With silver outperforming gold by 3/1 or so for well over a year, would you ever think it's not too late to maximize your gains by selling your gold and going all in silver?
It seems that the GSR is inexorably headed for the 16/1 historical/geological ratio that so many of us have predicted.
When I was a newbie in the fall of 08, I bought 18 Saints> ms64's but started studying and learned the silver story. I then sold them for a modest profit to go all in to silver. If I had NOT gone in 100% to silver, it would have cost me over a 100 grand.
Is there any rational reasoning to think that this tripling of profits for we silverphiles over gold profits will cease?
Just asking as maybe it may be time to switch back to gold?

When I see trends that are the opposite of current trends, I would consider trading gold for silver. I don't foresee this occurring for a long while.

it's all opinions backed with fact as usual, but at this point the game, i'm trying to keep things evened out. i've traded the other way when gold was at 1000 with no real regrets but unless i was unbalanced (in regard to the stack ratio) i wouldnt mess around too much with what i have. that being said, with the recent runup in silver, i might still move a 5th over into gold if 42 holds up over my 2 week trip.
i'll leave the 100% allocation to the braver souls out there and i'm certainly not brave enough to move my gold into silver after this recent trip to the moon.

I have a lot of silver and only a couple gold coins that i would trade for silver in a heart beat, I'm looking for a economic crash where silver and gold will do all the buying and I'll feel a lot safer pulling out some junk silver coins to purchase something than i will pulling out a gold eagle, then running around looking for change.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a silver for gold trade. I'll reverse the trade somewhere north of 40:1.

    It will happen.

It is amazing how RELENTLESSLY, day after day, year after year, silver outperforms gold 3/1. This is even while gold makes the headlines and silver is just the quiet, unassuming vehicle to wealth building.
If you have 100K or more invested, as a lot of us have, that's a lot of money to hold gold instead of silver because gold is so much more beautiful> which it is.

Gold will have its day. Simply put, silver has a lot of catching up to do, which is the main reason for the recent price run up.

There's an ad here for 1/10 gold for $149, minimum 5 per order(if it's still available)I was thinking about getting 10 and holding for the future. Small enough where you wouldn't need to make too much change but still a great price now. Opinions...this or silver?

you know at some point you simply have to consider the weight and space of silver.. If we have to run for our lives [a portion of Gimmers think we will] then silver will become very impractical..

Personally I like silver a lot more. Its a prettier and more noble medal.. . But I am considering exchanging some silver for gold because its too hard ot carry and hide..

I for one don't plan to run anywhere, however i would like to point out that silver only weights half as much as one year ago vs gold...

Thinking about selling some now and moving to silver, it's already to the point j6pk cant afford an ounce of gold but can an ounce of silver, this was my train of thought over the years as prices went up what would be in demand more, ergo I am weighted silver and have higher gains than gold, I think that trend will continue and even msm is saying the same thing now joe cant afford gold but can silver. I can see silver going to 100 before gold hits 2800.

This is yet a new era, the previous decade was just the begging. This will be a bubble, eventually, and it won't pop until the economy has really healed. And that's going to be a while. It'll be a bubble, built upon distrust of the financial systems and the monetary systems, and especially gov'ts.

3 years forward, or 3 years back means nothing to this ever pushing right now crowd. They refuse to see 10 feet in front of them much less 10 years. Pop some corn.

Interesting, since I started out exactly the same way you did, buying gold pieces (though, in my case, fractionals) back in 2002 and then silver starting in 2003, after doing a lot of reading. I recall silver being at around $10-12 when I started. Back then, if you were savvy, you could snag silver well below spot on FleaBay, since precious metals were pretty much out of vogue, and every idiot with a pair of ears was flipping real estate and stocks. I really miss those days. I owe a big thanks to Ted Butler, as I'm sure many others do, since his weekly commentaries really hit home for me and taught me a lot about the little-known silver market. A lot of people have mocked Ted over the years, but he really deserves some recognition. He was at least 10 years ahead of the silver bulls and he called everything that is happening now.

Anyway, back on track...Joe, I don't think there is any inherent significance to the oft-quoted 16:1 historical GSR. Back when 16:1 was the norm, there was no electronics, combustion engines, or other industrial demand for silver, and most of the silver that was mined, like gold, did not get consumed, so above-ground supplies increased cumulatively over time.

Today, industry is consuming large amounts of silver, and ore densities have dropped considerably as the "low-hanging fruit" has already been taken out. The days of being able to easily mine silver at or above 3,000 feet are gone. New resource discoveries are getting harder to find and the USGS reports appear to suggest that there is about 10-15 years of mineable silver left. If true, it seems reasonable to assume that we will see "peak silver" sometime before that, perhaps in 8 or 9 years, possibly even sooner if mining output increases in response to the recent demand surge.

Point being, the fundamentals dictate what the GSR should be today, and based on those fundamentals, one could argue for something more like 5:1 or 10:1. If true, there is no point in swapping silver for gold at any point in the near future, since we are no where near these ratios. The GSR of 50:1, which was the norm in the pre-2009 days was driven by the blatant manipulation of the paper silver market by a handful of concentrated short sellers, and it looks like their days of market-rigging are effectively over.

I'd say hold all silver and buy a bit more gold. And keep an eye on rhodium, it is a tough metal to get into because of the horrendous bid-ask spread, but it is the only PM that has not (yet) responded to the current market conditions.

Well son it seems that you are one of the few on these type of sites who isn't concerned about the fiscal debacle that we WILL have. I learned a lot from here since 2008 or so and one of them was NOT to be like the sheople and see no problem as you apparently seem to be.
It's a question of WHEN not if when this whole house of cards collapses.

You're hilarious. I am certainly concerned about the fiscal debacle we are in, and have been for the past six to seven years. Before that, I was too young to care. I voted for Ron Paul in the last election, I am present on this board, I hold gold and silver - would I do all these if I wasn't concerned? You're an arrogant f(t)ool.

No doubt the house of cards will collapse. However, it won't happen in the next year. I doubt it will happen in the next decade.

I am correct - people have been saying exactly what you have since I joined GIM I five years ago. Well before you did, so it appears I was concerned well before you were. Grow up, learn some respect for those who were here before you and learn the definition of hubris.

Why yes, yes I would. When the ratio is at 70:1. Oh wait, I already did that.

I did the same thing as I guess a lot of us could see the handwriting on the wall.
Now the question is when to reverse course.
    I think 16/1?

Did it at 50 and 40. Will burn the last of the 70:1 trade at 30 but if it hits 20 I'll trade all my Ag for Au except for the museum quality pieces.

If you think weight is a problem, trade for platinum.

I have NO problem storing my >4 tons of copper bars and hundreds of pounds of silver coins at my storage facility.
With Avalon's thinking, I guess I should trade it all for platinum and lose hundreds of thousands?

I hope not irons but I am NOT going to be ballbusted by buffoons and take it.
They'll ban me again as the mods like people to call me an ass, etc but they don't like me defending myself. How weird is it when the attacked person gets banned? Is this a freedom watch site?

Im weak when it comes to trading the GSR...went against my own strategy and traded for the precious. Provident shines once again by buying my Mexican 25 Pesos and 100 Pesos for spot and my generics for spot +.10. Pretty pleased overall...

Ended up getting a Austrian 4 Ducat (.4430) and a 1/10 oz Gold Kangaroo. Wish i couldve done it for more but I dont feel comfortable trading for more than 1/2 oz at a time...that leaves me some silver to trade if it drops to my next target of 32 or lower. Overall trade ratio just below 37 so not bad

I'm no expert, my friend... but some years ago, I was with the camp that thought silver was going to skyrocket to $100 and beyond. Now, I'm seeing sights on $200 per oz... but that could be wishful thinking (I keep reminding myself). If you're by yourself, buy gold. If you have a larger family, I'm thinking silver may be best. I say this because with silver, you may be able to spread your wealth out (stretch it out) better than with gold. A few silver coins for the Mrs., a few silver coins for the kids, grandparents, etc etc.

We can play with gold to silver ratios but will it be worth your time and effort? Finding a counterparty, haggling on price, and transporting the metals. This is what I'm trying to figure out myself.

I have sold gold for silver, and silver for gold, just watch the ratio and take your chances. At this point, I'd sell silver and buy gold.

This statement about sums it for me too. For the last 2 months I have been trading silver for gold. As long as the GSR keeps getting smaller I will keep doing the same. When the GSR gets back to around 50:1 or so I will reverse my trades.
