great question, thanks for asking it,
It would be nice to hear more selling stories also, as to how it went and the like,
We have plenty of intel on the buy side, and sorted the good from the bad,
Now it would be cool to see the other side also,

Fo one thing, do they lock in sell price from your phone call?
Or do you get the close price the day they get the metals?
Or is it the low price the day they get the metals?

I only have good things to say about Apmex. I sold to them a few years back. I had hidden a few dozen coins in a box of 90 when I ducked the coins for safe keeping. I shipped the box without checking and they emailed me to let me know that I had shipped more than I originally stated. That's pretty honest.

My observations
- Their prices on the sell side can be a bit low, but I've found that they're willing to take a lot more types of bullion that aren't really popular than other dealers. I've frequently used them for this purpose knowing they'll take the undesirable soldered AGE or off brand bars (of course either at spot or discount to spot though).
- For silver bars that are fractional, they'll pay you for the fraction. (example 10.26 toz)
- They seem to be less picky overall as well, and will usually not ding you if your order is slightly non conforming. (maples with milk spots or banged up bars or slightly less than perfect gold bullion or if your estimate of grading on morgans is a bit off, etc)
- You lock in the order over the phone.
- I think they give you 1-2 days to ship officially, but they don't seem to be too particular about this. Perhaps if it's a huge order or you're taking 1 week or more, they'll follow up asking for the tracking.
- As $1000 is the minimum, I'd recommend shipping to them via USPS registered mail. They're not going to take a loss if the package is lost by USPS. The longer transit time for registered is never an issue. Some of my packages have taken 2 weeks.
- I'm a lot more comfortable buying and selling with them than many of the other dealers.
- Their year end popcorn thing is a nice gesture.
Because I have worked with them over the years and their traders had repeat positive dealings with me, there have been a couple instances where they went out of their way to help me out, I guess somewhat similar to what a good local dealer would do for repeat customers.
- They mishandled one of my orders and took a month or so to process my payment check. To make up for it, they gave me the higher current spot price, which resulted in a couple hundred dollars more and sent the payment via usps priority (versus first class). Their mistake, but a really nice gesture that I doubt a different dealer would have shown.
- Probably as a result of years of honest dealings and to encourage me to transact with them more versus other dealers, I've been bumped up to a 3rd party dealer status. This means they will ship items and send payment for sale orders as soon as I lock in phone quotes, and give their best/better quoted pricing on items on both sides of the transaction. Either free or really cheap shipping, even on smaller orders.

Yeah, I've found they generally don't give you more for slabbed items unless they're ms70s or rare issues. You'll take a hit selling platinum & palladium to them as well because of the illiquidity. They pay more for proofs, but not a whole lot more.
plat/pall are better sold on bulliondirect. you'll get around spot for ounces and a premium for fracs.
They are first class. They lock the price on the phone then email a PO. They lock price cause they hedge the buy right away. They pay right away. Rock solid.
It's better to burn out than fade away...........

I have. Fair price, locked over the phone at the time of trade. I mailed to them via registered and then they processed and mailed me a check. It all went smoothly. The only downside is that it took almost 3 weeks to get the check in my hand by the time I waited on registered mail to arrive there (it is INCREDIBLY slow since it's secure, ground all the way) and waited on them to process it (I'm sure they were a bit back up with purchases give the high spot price at the time) and waited on their check to arrive via mail. If you need the cash NOW, then I guess you could calll J.G. Wenwort.....oh wait, nevermind....that's for something else. If you need the cash fast, there's always local dealers lined up ready to give you 90% of spot for all your treasure!!!
It might well be said that, while the free market bends over backwards to serve the needs and desires of individuals, the state merely bends individuals over backwards.
They have an "express" check in that you could pay for, which is pretty much worthless now that the market settled back down. I think it included priority check in, and a check through usps priority mail. Back when prices were peaking, it took 3-5 business days after receipt to check in. I thnk registered mail was also backed up. Packages would normally have taken a week in transit. When silver was at 50, it took over 2 weeks.
I believe they'll offer wire'ing services as well if the transaction is large enough, think it was 25k.
Called on a thursday to sell some lunars and some engelhard prosperctors, they said they will email me with price on the engelhard prospectors the next day, it never came. I emailed them friday night and got nothing back untill tuesday and then a generic email saying call the 800 if you want to sell. I doubt I would attempt to sell to them again.
Prices they offered for the lunars were 1/3rd of their sell price.

Several years back I ran into money problems and had to sell my stash. I sold off about 20k of gold and silver to them. Because I had a varied collection, they had me send them my spreadsheet with a description of each coin or set of coins. They then put the value they were willing to pay an sent me back the spreadsheet. I then printed off the spreadsheet and included it with what I sent them. All in all it was a very smooth transaction. I had my check with a week of sending them what I had.
