Appears to be official from the horse's mouth:

    http://www.coinnews.net/2011/07/27/u...culated-coins/

"The United States Mint statement, shown below, noted that it was "apparent that several varieties" of uncirculated coins existed which had "differing or missing vapor blast finishes."

The cause of the varieties is being investigated. The equipment used in producing the coins appears to be a focal point. The Mint said it relies on retrofitted vapor blasting equipment which was originally designed for 3-inch medals. To address the problems and restore production consistency in its line of America the Beautiful five ounce products, the Mint has ordered new equipment designed specifically for the larger uncirculated coins."

Just ordered the Mt Hood "p" puck off the US mint website. Order number 37963XXX

Oh yes, My order date is listed as "07-28-2011 at 12:03 AM"

    Should that read 12:03 PM??

No matter, I have my order number, with an order status of "Your order request is on hold"

THE ALTERNATIVE IS ONLY WHETHER THE CRISIS SHOULD COME SOONER AS THE RESULT OF A VOLUNTARY ABANDONMENT OF FURTHER CREDIT EXPANSION OR LATER AS A FINAL AND TOTAL CATASTROPHE OF THE CURRENCY SYSTEM INVOLVED.

The mint should have worked the dies instead of the individual pucks and ensure consistency in product. But no - each coin is unique - and the hunt is on to find variations.

Two reasons I haven't ordered any. Don't want that axed up coin and I would think they did some QC work to pull out any obvious non blasted coins.

I did order 1 of the hoods

We may be the only original atb junkies left standing for the 2011's newmisty. I'll be buying as they come out. Hope a collector base develops quickly . I think there are many folks out there just waiting to become hooked on pucks. Maybe an infomercial is in order?

I'm in as well, mainly for the reason that I just can't let go at this point. It is a bold program despite whatever else folks want to say about it. This is exactly how I felt with the spouse program and, although I have blinked a few times, I have stayed the course with that series so far and it it currently seems to be paying off. This program is unprecedented. I believe if I just follow my silly lil numismatic heart ultimately my investor brain will be rewarded for the courage and fortitude it takes to stay in the pocket.

One thing I know for sure today. With 8 sets of 2010 and 2 full sets of 2010 P. I'm holdin some silver

That dance even though I think silver will drop one more time before it resumes its assent to the heaven's. I could care less about any short term moves except to load the wagons more given the opportunity. If not I'll continue to buy slow and steady.

Off topic a little, but just wanted to know how many of your are collecting the bullion coins as well. So far I've got a full 2010-2011 set of the bullion coins, and a full set of the 2010 P set. Is it worth while collecting the whole set of these?

I will get therapy if it proves to be a bad move financially. That therapy will come in the form of large quantities of good dark beer. I am starting that therapy now just in case

I'll stack mostly bullion ATB's going forward. A mint tube here.......a mint tube there.

Just pulled out my Grand Canyon, I had hardly looked at it...no blasted finish, smooth as a mirror. Are you guys telling me this is worth something?

Mrs. Old just went out to buy a part for our dryer.. less than two weeks to her due date. Yes, a saint she is. Time to order the Mount Hood (shhhh!).

Thanks HS, I should have checked myself. I'm no expert, but looks like it could be 70.... any recommendations? Flip, or hold? I'm not one for "error coins" but it could be the "key" to the series, no?

It might be good to wait and see how many of these "no-finish" coins turn up. Eye it side-by-side with any of your bullion pucks and compare the finishes.

MCM has 16 'light finish' coins in stock right now across all grades. Given the fact the variation was just discovered and they already have that many in stock I think it's safe to say there hundreds, if not thousands of these out there. Whether that's 200 or 15,000 though remains to be seen . Interestingly enough I was at a relatives house last night when he opened his GC coin (as well as all his other 'P' pucks). He too received a light finish coin, but unfortunately for him there were several nasty scratches on Washington's face.

Old friend - seems to me that these 5 oz huge coins are running out of BLING, Popularity, and Price.

I'd slab it and put it off for sale at a reserve around half of retail - and watch to see.

Then if you are really lucky buy another SPOUSE with the extra dough.

I suggest a newer current issue = maybe the Hayes will work in time wise.

I read in last week's COIN WORLD on the throne (you can figure that out think RODAN's THINKER)

that they will start with the 2011 "P" UNC 5 oz ATB series this year
and finish next year with the 2012 "P" UNCs 5 oz ATBs.

    They are really busy bees.

I like their numbers better then the Bullion ATB 5 oz set - although I'm somewhat split on the look difference depending
    upon the coin puck.

So far, sales of the Mount Hood Five Ounce Silver Coins have reached 14,759. Although this does account for more than 50% of the total mintage, the initial sales fall short of the previous four releases. The first design featuring Hot Springs National Park had sold approximately 25,000 units in the opening days. This was followed by the Yellowstone release, which opened at 24,626, and the Yosemite at 20,511. The fourth design featuring Grand Canyon opened with sales of 19,300. This is the only previously issued design which remains available for sale at the US Mint.

Sales as of Aug 8. ** updated **

    2010-P Hot Springs National Park ----- 27,000*
    2010-P Yellowstone National Park ----- 27,000*
    2010-P Yosemite National Park -------- 27,000*
    2010-P Grand Canyon National Park --- 24,217
    2010-P Mount Hood National Park ----- 17,504

    These puppies if you buy them and the MS ones;

that's ten to twenty a year as they catch up - are getting expensive.

But I'll keep up because soon these will hit $120 to $160 an ounce SPOT.

    Then I will reconsider.

I just received my Mount Hood coin today, it also looks great. However I am not so sure about continuing with this series. First, the issues this year are coming fast and furious. Second, haven't heard what the estimated mintage is for the 2011's are yet. And lastly not sure if there will be a market for these coins. The lcs's around here are saying that they are they are turning down opportunities to purchase the coin. Yet, I am not interested in selling by 2011's at all.

BTW, we all know what was minted is there any way of finding out what was returned and if the returns were ultimately sold. Somehow, I think that the actual coins in colectors hands are somewhat less than what was minted. Anyone have an idea as to what the true number is?

Also, we know what the mint says, but somehow I think that the error in the Grand Canyon was more extensive that they are letting on.

Stay with the SP as long as you can - they are low mintage - and BEAUTIFUL overall

when silver hits $120 to $160 you'll be damn glad you did -

and by a long shot it may go over $500 an ounce!

I'm almost certainly not buying any more of the raw 5 oz coins in the future. If the premiums are low enough I might buy them, just for the sake of buying silver. The 'P' Mint's I will probably stay the distance and try and collect them all.

That was my darn decision - but the VICKSBERG and CHICSAW were so darn pretty - I hit the BUY buttons!

Uh huh, pulled the trigger on the MH P today myself. Still...not looking too promising for ATB future with these numbers.

    http://news.coinupdate.com/2011-amer...-sales-slower/

"As of August 2, 2011, total sales across all five designs has reached 376,800 units, accounting for 1,884,000 troy ounces of silver. The breakdown by design appears following.

    Release Date Coins Ounces
    Gettysburg April 25, 2011 126,700 633,500
    Glacier April 25, 2011 126,700 633,500
    Olympic May 23, 2011 80,700 403,500
    Vicksburg June 20, 2011 27,500 137,500
    Chickasaw July 18, 2011 15,200 76,000

Sales have increased by only 23,700 coins since the last figures published a little over one month ago. The Vicksburg National Military Park design accounted for 8,500 units of the increase. The Chickasaw National Recreation Area design, which was first made available on July 18, 2011, accounted for the additional sales of 15,200 units.

The United States Mint has also been releasing numismatic versions of the five ounce silver coins, starting with the 2010 designs. Following the same pattern as the 2011 bullion coins, the first two releases experienced strong opening sales and quick sell outs. This was followed by slower sales for the subsequent designs. The recently released Mount Hood National Forest design experienced the slowest opening sales to date"

Think in ounces not in dollars.

    As far as dollars go they have printed not twice the money supply in 6 years but close to seven times the entire money supply;
just look at the inflation IS STARTING to hit now hitting even with the HUGE defaults and bankruptcies around.

I like to think in ounces too. What's swaying me to give up the ATB's is the fact you can buy more ounces for your buck if you buy generic.
For the price of a 'P' Mint you can buy 7 ounces, instead of the 5 ounces the ATB offers.

I'm an ATB fan, but to be honest if you're thinking in ounces then you should be buying the regular release 2011 ATB's or some other silver product as the premiums on the 'P' pucks are quite steep.

Well, I agree the premium is too high and cancelled the MH P order. Found a FS MS69PL Chickasaw for almost same price delivered. Granted there is a premium over raw coin, but if the bullion starts to fade in popularity, might be rarer than Ps (graded ones anyway). Not sure where the ATB program is going but will be a shame if it's halted for lack of interest.

Is there any information on when the 2011 "P" mint mark coins will be released? I have decided to collect these and to buy the bullion issues for building my silver stacks.

Just got off the Mint site - reordered MH! Had a hard time with this one, could not make up my mind, but heck, there is an open slot in the box where the others are hiding...anybody notice that Grand Canyon is now open for purchase, no household limit? Farscott, this is the only info about the 2011s I saw while I was on the site.
