Looks like my preps are going to come in handy--lost my job yesterday

Well, yesterday became a SHTF situation for me as I lost my job. The loss wasn't totally unexpected, as I've been working in an industry (mass media) that's been hemorrhaging jobs for a while, but this just reinforces in my mind the absolute necessity of prepping. I've got enough food for two people for at least six months, so that will be one less thing to worry about while I'm job-hunting. For those of you who pray, please keep me and my family in your prayers.

Something to think about as far as putting a few bucks in your pocket in the meantime is collecting scrap metal. Won't make you rich, but it'll keep you busy and making some money.

I feel for you Nickeless. While not unemployed, I've been "underemployed" for going on 3 years now. One thing I have done to make up for lost income is sell items on an online auction site. I had a couple motorcycle restoration projects that ended up getting parted out. That, plus selecting "things" that we all accumulate, and don't really need, has supplemented things for a bit. You'd be surprised how much you can get for some items that have been sitting around for years. Losing a job sure forces you into survival prep mode, if you weren't there already! Good luck!

I voluntarily left the W-2 world in 2006, when I jumped head-first into the Liberty Dollar business, and after that highly lucrative business was destroyed, I did some clean-tech consulting gigs, none of which really paid off in FRNs, but from which I gained valuable knowledge.

The real "pay-off" has been the knowledge gained through independence of the Babylonian system, along with the few remaining scraps of Cu and Ag.

Most recently, I have been working on human powered truck-cycles and PV installations.

Keep in mind that there are folks who want to be prepped, and have the FRNs, but they need our assistance.

Still a good idea to rotate/reserve that six months of food for even worse times ahead. Utilize unemployment benefits and food stamps and every other resource first...

That may not be a popular sentiment around here, but what ever benefits you can gain, are chickenfeed compared to the theft of taxes from the individual over their working life.

Sorry about the job loss, however, it may turn into a positive. Here is my story: I was working a vile, high stress job in a call center for unpleasable Pxxxxx who demanded perfection 24/7. I was also trying to handle 3 rental properties on the side and failing at that. I was fighting constantly with my wife and considering just walking away and living under a bridge somewhere and drinking lots of cheap wine. I did not care if I lived another day. The call center laid me off and I used the time to fix up a totally trashed rental and sell it. I used the money to pay off my home mortgage and get some counseling. Today, I have 2 rentals left, found a part time job that I LOVE, and will only leave my wife after 4 minutes without a pulse. I am now thinking of raiding my 401k and buying another rental before The Bernank turns my money into toilet paper. My suggestion is to use the time off to do some serious thinking about where you are going and where you want to end up. Use unemployment and food stamps to the max. Let the prebought stooges who rule bail YOU out. They are happy to bail out political contributors. The system is doomed anyway so get as much as you can before the crash. Good Luck

I'm not sure how much marketing I'm going to do with carrots, but a few days ago I registered a couple domains I'm going to be using to sell bumper stickers and maybe T-shirts and other items to capitalize on our commander-in-chief's alleged brilliance. I'm getting a little more money on my last paycheck next week, so I'm going to use that to buy ads on a couple right-wing/libertarian sites that will hopefully bring me a bit of cash.

I went to the unemployment office the moment I walked out the door after getting my walking papers. They said it might be three weeks or so before I'd start getting any payments, but I'm hoping to at least have a part-time job by then.

Well, this could make things interesting if I get hired...I just passed an online pre-employment assessment test for Walmart. Beggars can't be choosers. But I'd probably have to change up some of my preps-shopping behavior if I were to work at one of the local stores...or maybe I could just buy stuff that doesn't look conducive to "hoarding" such as frozen carrots (which I dehydrate), and buy the rest of my preps at the three other 24-hour stores within a 30-mile radius.


Any GIMers work at Walmart who could offer advice or perspective on working there? I'm thinking this might be a good topic for its own thread...

Merlin, I see your point, but having known at one point about 13 years ago what real hunger was like, in my mind I can't justify taking scarce resources such as food stamps when I've got plenty of actual food. I don't want to take food stamps away from people who really need them. I have skills and knowledge now that I didn't have back then, so I should be able to get through this rough patch.
