Default Silver: rounds, eagles, bars or bags?

When you're buying silver, what's your preferred type and why?

If its all about most PM for your buck, generic seems the way to go.... but I worry about resale to different dealers... which is what I assume the premium on SAE's takes care of. Any thoughts one way or another?

Sounds like you're pretty well plugged in.

I prefer SAE's above all else when it comes to straight silver bullion (leaving out the super-premiums like Brits, Lunars, Pandas, etc...). However, the current state of the market dictates. At the moment the premiums on SAE's seem way out of line. Generic would be my choice today. Next week... who knows?

I've bought and sold silver a couple of times. I've never had difficulty selling silver rounds or bars. Coin dealers have seen more varied stuff then I ever will.

Oddly enough, I did have some difficulty selling Credit Suisse bars of gold to one dealer. He knew what they were but said nobody in his area was interested in them. He had no problems with Krugerands. Anyhow, I know more then one dealer so it wasn't much of a inconvenience.

When buying generic I recommend common brand names A-Mark, APMEX, Sunshine, Engelhard, Johnson Matthey as they well known by everyone.

Most of my silver is in various minutemen, buffaloes and who knows what generic, now I wish I had spent a little more and bought only ASE as they seem more sought after and are more respected.
The extra premium at purchase would have meant extra value at sale I think and would make sales smoother.
Take into account I have not bought in years and have never sold any.

We tend to just pick up generic (if they have them) and ASEs. My husband hates when I find "cheap" kooks or koalas, cause i'm never going to want to sell or trade them.

I'm thinking of going with Liberty Eagle Silver Rounds.

    Using APMEX numbers
SAE, $5.49 per coin over spot
SLE, $2.29 per round over spot
Thats a saving of $3.20 per round when purchasing.

When I'm ready to sell, my dealer pays:
SAE, $1.85 per coin over spot
    SLE, spot
Assuming these prices dont change, thats a total difference of $1.35 per coin/round.

Its a tough call, and to make the decision even harder...
After the Liberty Dollar fiasco last month I'm almost hesitant to deal in anything that doesn't come from the mint.

I personally like generic/poured bars that don't have a mirror finish... so I can fondle them. I don't sell very often so I'm not too concerned about it at the moment. I figure I can just sell my generic stuff for a few dollars under spot when it hits big numbers

I would buy ASEs more often if there wasn't such a big premium. I do occasionally find some at the local coin shops for $1.50 over spot, though.

They have Sunshine Mint and APMEX branded rounds at the same price as those. All things being equal, I'd go for the Sunshine Mint. Compared to non-branded rounds, I much prefer my generic not to be quite SO generic.

silver...............little of everything, mostly in 90% us coinage. I get the ASE and Maple type when the magazine deals come up. Favorite is US halves, and 80% canada silver dollars. Love to fondle that bag with my daughter............

Tulving has all of his buy and sell prices posted.

Up until this week he had about .79 buy/sell spread on most of the silver.

Now it has gone to about $1.

Personally I'm like the guy with the "I Like Guns" song. I like all of it. Rounds, Maples, bars, Eagles, 90% ....

Might find a local dealer that would trade some of the generic for SAEs. Wait for the premiums to drop on the SAEs before making a deal.

I have a little of everything I guess- Rolls of ASE's and maple leafs; 90% bags $100.00 face value, BU rolls of 90% dimes and quarters; individual ASE's, maple leafs, philharmonics, pandas, kooks, etc; and 5 and 10 ounce bars. I've taken a liking to the hand poured bars lately. An addict will put anything into his veins or down his throat. I've never sold an ounce. Being something of a romantic, I decided a long time ago I would never get a chance to discover treasure like my heroes Howard Carter, Sir Leonard Wooley, Heinrich Schliemann, and Mel Fisher so I thought I build my own little treasure one piece at a time. It has grown over the years!

Just an FYI, some of the old generic bars command a very healthy premium, some not so much but many would be surprised at what they sell for on the auction block.

Base your buys on what your desired results happen to be and have an exit strategy before you buy.

I kinda prefer the Monarch hand poured bars..just like the look of them..price wise somewhere in the middle of Provident and Apmex..and sometimes they are a little over on the weight then what is marked on them
