Default How long does pvc pipe last?

I am working on a project and i need to know how long pvc pipe will last when exposed to the elements above ground. Mainly hot, cold, rain, mild winds etc. Is 10 years a good estimate for pvc pipe? How about steel? 50 years?

Right now the two factors I am looking at are cost vs longevity.

PVC is cheap but won't last that long

steel is more expensive but will last longer than pvc.

Anyone know any other pipe materials I should consider.

What's the project ? Something under pressure or structural or what ? PVC get brittle with age, even in the ground, I can tell you that.

You are being too coy to get a good answer.

    WHAT kind of load?

    WHAT size** PVC?

**Size matters. Thicker PVC/thinner PVC. Use matters.

What are you going to build? PVC water pipes, for instance, will last over a hundred years, per the Water Research Foundation.

Guessing isn't feasible. Are you going to use it in a fireplace to hold logs? Thirty seconds. See?

Don't be cheap and use copper pipe and you will have no worries almost forever... Who knows, the copper might be worth a lot more when you finally dig it up.

I've had a 4' piece of PVC pipe exiting my house to drain a sump pump for seventeen years now and it seems no worse for wear for the year round exposure it gets in Michigan.

    I luv this stuff.

Sprays on like paint, dries to a thick semi-flexible rubberized coating. It's designed for auto undercarriages, but it works great on almost anything I've used it on: metal, plastic, wood, concrete. And it's paintable.

A couple of coats of this stuff and it'll protect anything from moisture, insects, etc.

About $3.00 a can at Big Lots, $5.00 at Home Despot or (not-so)Lowe's or an auto parts store.

PVC can shatter ABS will last longer and that is what most contractors are using now except underground sometimes they use pvc.
