I've only frozen bags of rice to kill any weevils in the rice before I vacuum-sealed it. Other than that, you're wasting freezer space. Just vacuum-seal the rice and everything will be OK.

I always have a 25 pound bag in my deep freeze. Never been inedible. Sometimes after about 1 -1.5 years, it seems to absorb a plastic like odor, but it tastes fine if you can stomache the odor.

You could also put a 1/4 tsp diatomaceous earth in the bag with the rice.

You can buy a pound of it for cheap and it goes a long way. Feed stores carry it.

    Pest control
Diatomite is also used as an insecticide, due to its physico-sorptive properties. The fine powder absorbs lipids from the waxy outer layer of insects' exoskeletons, causing them to dehydrate.[9] Arthropods die as a result of the water pressure deficiency, based on Fick's law of diffusion. This also works against gastropods and is commonly employed in gardening to defeat slugs. However, since slugs inhabit humid environments, efficacy is very low. It is sometimes mixed with an attractant or other additives to increase its effectiveness. Medical-grade diatomite is sometimes used to de-worm both animals and humans, with questionable efficacy.[10][11] It is most commonly used in lieu of boric acid, and can be used to help control and eventually eliminate cockroach and flea infestations. This material has wide application for insect control in grain storage.[12] It has also been used to control bedbug infestations, but this method may take weeks to work.[13]

Diatoms, a strange tiny creature home. For years it was used in refrigeration as micro sieve filter driers. The earliest gravity water filters used compressed DE candles.

White rice and brown rice are different.

White rice, you can store for much longer (much much longer) than brown rice. You can freeze but not sure how space efficient that will be (as mentioned in this thread). Due to my health issue, I can't eat white rice. So I've been storing brown rice, in ball jars, vacuum sealed, with oxygen absorber, in my extra freezer (freezer is labeled "Rice" on the outside).

I've been able to store over 28 pounds of brown rice in my freezer... from buying multiple 2.5lb bags of rice. It will probably last me two months (or less) depending on how often I eat rice when the SHTF. But I live in a condo... so even I'm impressed with how much I'm able to store.

I'm coming close to a year of brown rice storage... and still looks fine inside the jars. Given the temp inside the freezer, I can't imagine anything is growing inside the jars. But will be sure to report that on GIM if it happens.

If you eat white rice... purchase bulk and store it at below room temperature in a sealed drum/barrel, with little to no access to added moisture. You should be fine for over a year. AND... you should always rotate your stock on a regular basis.

I put that stuff down my swimming pool strainers after doing a backflush. I also use it around my goats as it gets rid of flies instantly. Magic stuff to be sure.
Ineptocracy (in-ept-o-cra-cy)—a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.
