Yep, "Rot Poast" is hard to beat when cooked properly in a Sun Oven.
    Just kidding of course!
We like "Ham Hocks & Beans" (prefer the meatier Ham Shanks though) & "Corned Beef & Cabbage", & "Rot Poast" of course.

With a brown gravy like substance?

I believe it should be a forum rule that pics have to accompany these food prep topics.

    Rot post indeed!

Good for you Unca. Did you brown the meat before putting it in the Sun Oven, or did you use the Sun Oven from start to finish? And you put the veggies in at the start? Or part way through?

Tell us more. I've never done a roast in my Sun Oven.

Three hours and thirty minnits. The sun oven held exactly 300 degrees the whole time.

DodgeBy: Youse is right. My bad.

Prepare yerself for the world's simplest recipe for a drop-dead yummy dinner:

One thick chunka sirloin with some Lemon Pepper sprinkled on it.

Put it in the pot that comes with the sun oven (one of them black speckled metal jobbies).

Open a can of mushmoom soup and dump it on top of the meat. Difficult recipe, eh wot?

Cover the sucker, and turn on the sun.

GAWD! Towards the end, it smelled SO good: Herself and Your Humble Obdn't &tc were standing by the oven, drooling.

    Serve it with jasmine rice.

Nossir. First to last. Sun Oven.

    No veggies.

Glorious gravy ensued by... OK, here is the sekrit:

Use SIRLOIN. There is just the right amount of fat on a chunk of sirloin... it mixes with the mushroom soup to make a fantastic glop to put on the rice. ALWAYS serve pot roast with horseradish on the side. Double yum!

I bought a couple Sun Ovens that just arrived about a week ago. Haven't had time to use them yet, but looking forward to it (had to finish my preps first).

Build quality seems OK. They need a fair amount of clean up before use. I wasn't impressed that the removable tray had very sharp edges -- I will probably file it down.

I thought it was ironic the product was packaged with a fair amount of Styrofoam -- being that this is suppose to be an "environmentally friendly" sort of thing. There are much better alternatives, and for the price, they should certainly be able to afford it. But oh well.

I want to try a batch of rice and beans for starters (the bulk of my preps). Anyone have any good rice and beans recipes, or recommendations for how to cook them in the Sun Oven?

I'm talking about the Global Sun Oven. There's only one model, really. Some resellers may include the pot, some not.... but the oven itself is the same.

Yuppers... Just one kind. I would call them on the phone and ask about the $269 price. I paid the price shown here:

    http://www.sunoven.com/cart/index.ph...e=products_all

But I SWEAR I later saw them for sale for $269 in their advertising.

Doan make. $300 is just fine. Shipping is free.

I am cooking roast beast in mine right this minute.

There is one thing y'all might want to know about:

Water pasteurization. Sun Oven does it with zereo effort. You just put a pot of water fulla

Worms, Protozoa cysts (Giardia, Cryptosporidium, Entamoeba)
Bacteria (V. cholerae, E. coli, Shigella, Salmonella typhi), Rotavirus
    Hepatitis A virus
...and mebbe a booger or two

Let it sit in the Sun Oven for... oh... twenty minutes (150+ degrees). Boiling is not necessary.

I wonder how hot it could get here in Houston with 105 degrees.

It reminds me of a science project I did in KC in 5th grade in in 1972. A parabolic shaped cooker with a tilting frame. Skewer hot dogs at the focal point. 15 minutes. Easy Bake oven for boys, I suppose.

Dunno if it is linear, but here in Floriduh an 85-degree day holds the oven temp at 330F.

Increase that by 20 degrees... may or may not add. Just dunno. Don't make, though. 330+F is hot enough to cook ANYTHING.

And you can reduce that temp to anything you like by turning the oven a bit.

There are two problems with solar cooking in winter. The first is low ambient air temps which will tend to reduce cooking temps in your Sun Oven, even though it is insulated.

The bigger problem, in my view, is that during the winter the sun will be much lower in the sky and, thus, the energy entering your solar cooker will be much lower, entering as it does obliquely. There is not plenty of sunshine in the dead of winter, lol. Could I use it to melt snow and warm enough water for a sponge bath? Maybe. Cook a loaf of bread of a pot or rice or beans? Good luck.

I have not tried to use my Sun Oven in January, when it might be -5 degrees below zero F. and the days start at 7 AM and end at 4 PM. And I don't think I'll try anytime soon. Better yet, I'll take up the challenge and use my Sun Oven over the next several months and report back to the group. Then, my opinion will be based on fact <grin>

Should be interesting. Here's a vid of a woman that used hers at 22 degrees F in Michigan during the winter. Hers got a little above 200 degrees (I think she said 220 at one point). That's not very warm, but it seemed to get the job done.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Ix36JtLBrU

A guy from Ontario cooking at 28F and the oven is at 340... Although this isn't the Global Sun Oven -- it's his a home made version of something similar. But you could probably mod the Global Sun Oven a little bit (saw another vid on this where someone added more tin foil to the corners) and get similar results.
