Default Numismastic silver vs numismastic gold

Huge newbie with a newbie question.

Been researching numismatics for 2 weeks now and get the feeling that there is more love for silver numismatics than the gold numismatics.

I felt that there was more people willing to pay more of a % premium on silver numismatics than on gold numismatics.

    Any opinions on this?

    Thanks!

If you are just getting started in precious metals, I would forget about numismatic coins (both, silver and gold) for now and get some regular silver and gold bullion put away. Then you can pay more for some numismatics.

If you already have bullion stacked, then disregard my post.

There are many smart folks here at GIM2 who can help in the numismatics area. I'm not one of them though. Anyway, welcome to GIM2!

AMEN! Buying true numismatic coins, especially classics, is a game best left for the experienced pro's. Spend a year or two stacking metals for as close to melt as possible while you're learning about numi areas that you're interested in. Most here eschew paying more than a 5% premium for any metal ever, but IMO buying certain numi coins makes sense as long as the premiums are in line. Modern commemoratives from the mint can be a great way to stack bullion and give yourself a chance at some upside numi potential, but even then the premiums have to be reasonable. If you're looking to make a quick buck or two then trade stocks as PM's are meant to preserve your wealth, not turn you into a millionaire over-night.

and get the feeling that there is more love for silver numismatics than the gold numismatics.
I suppose the amount of Morgan collectors out there may have something to do with that . When it comes to numi stuff, it's not about gold or silver, it's about rarity and demand. To truly buy wisely it takes years of research and experience so I can't emphasize enough the fact that you need to spend much more time on the sidelines. My advice would be to buy bags of 90% US junk and work on filling Whitman albums. If you enjoy coins then you'll certainly enjoy filling an album with coins that you paid essentially melt value for. After you feel you have enough of a cushion then you can start to branch out into the numi world.

One big reason (among many) is that silver is more affordable for collectors. I looked into gold doubloons some time ago, but wised up and went to Spanish silver dollars.
