I'll probably catch some flak for this, but Shinedown's rendition of Simple Man is my favorite cover. Used it for the mother-son dance at my wedding......

Came to enjoy this song after playing it in a band. Never had heard the original until afterwards.

Another that will probably catch some flak:
It's kinda an odd thing, though, so many "originals" are merely covers of songs that never made it big with their original artists. "Bobby McGee" by Kristofferson as done by Joplin comes to mind.

Blinded by the Light - Manfred Man vs. Bruce Springsteins original crap version
And as much as i hate her... Sinead O Conners version of Nothing Compares is way better than Prince's orginal version.

Another flack catcher would be Metallica's version of "Turn the Page"
Won't go as far as saying it is better, Five Finger Death Punch's remake of Bad Company just as good as the original.
Whiskey, Tango, Foxtrot!!!!
Hands down, the winner even though I like Trent's original too.

This was originally by a garage band called "The Leaves"

Close tie between these two, Hayes gets credit for the live performance though.

My top three favorite covers better than the original is (1.) Respect - Aretha Franklin (2.) Twist and Shout - Beatles (3.) Always something There To Remind Me - Naked Eyes. All those covers beat the originals hands down.

Loads of Dylan songs too numerous to mention but he did manage to croak out of a few good ones himself.

Here is a cover versus original artist conundrum for the therapy group.
Tim "ripper" Owens vs Rob Halford. After seeing both flavors of "Priest" live, I have to say the Ripper holds his own.
I'm done, It's on!
Oddly enough, Priest is the only band/lead singer split that I can think of in which I took the band.
Sabbath aint Sabbath without Ozzy. Misfits aint Misfits without Danzig. Van Halen aint Van Halen without Roth.
But JP with Ripper Owens is at least a tie, and probably better in my book.
***It's a tangent, but you could probably throw in Metallica without Cliffy...Just sayin...![]()

This was the old standard for songs better than the original. Along with any Joe Cocker
song. The emotional side was big. http://youtu.be/1IfTHLi-7rk
My husband LOVES Buddy Holly but prefers the Beatles version of ''Words of Love". Both versions were great back in the day. http://youtu.be/Ay8y8MctiOw
Original song is O.K....
But these guys just really blow it away:

Two, that certainly fit the criteria:
Phil Collins, Land of Confusion cover by Disturbed.. HUGE HUGE BONUS points for Evil Bankers, UN/Globalists tie in:
Michael Jackson, Smooth criminal cover by Alient Ant Farm (not a big AAF fan, but certainly better than orig..:
Lenoard Skynard, I never dreamed covered by Black Label Society:
