Its ahit or miss I think but there really are great deals to be had...much more deals than for gold or .999 silver. If you commit to buying sterling at least at a 20% discount to spot then you can bet for sure that your silver will be under spot after it gets refined and you receive bars.

So I replied to a local ad for a seller with a 1925 Half Sovereign on a 9 carat mount and a 9 carat chain. Price asked was $250 which i think is quite good. The 1925 half sovereigns were only minted in South Africa and I believe the mintage is under 1,000,000

Going to pick it up tonight

Well what a surprise...I get there she shows me the coin. I didnt inspect it well. Give the lady $250 and I go to the car drive off and park to check the coin. It seemed to me the coin was too heavy. This was not a half sovereign but a full sovereign minted in South Africa.

Coin alone is worth $380 plus the mount and chain are 2.8 grams of 9K worth $54. That is essentially like paying for gold at a spot price of $907

Damn! You and Irons could stick your hands in a barrel of dicks and pull out a puzzy. Nice scores boyz!
But I have a question now. Do the half and full sovs have the same dia but different thickness or what?

Thanks God I weighed mine when I traded for them if they look that much alike in size.

You can tell the difference just by the weight. The sizes are also different...19.30mm and 22 for full The best way that you can relate it to is the 4 ducat coins are similar in size. A full soevereign is about the size of a quarter.

    (1) USA minted, one-tenth troy ounce gold round, .9999 pure, bearing our distinctive Lady Liberty design, minted exclusively for Independent Living Bullion by the prestigious Sunshine Mint in Idaho. If it's been a long time since you've held a gold coin in your hand, I think you're going to be impressed. Current market price of this brilliant uncirculated coin, $182.00. Your cost, only $167.00!

Three (3) USA minted, uncirculated one troy ounce silver rounds, .999 pure, bearing our popular Don't-Tread-on-Me design. Current market price, $30.50 per round, $91.50 total. Your cost, only $85.95!

Five dollars face value pre-1965 U.S. Mint silver coins (consisting of dimes, quarters, and/or halves – based on availability) and containing 3.575 oz of silver. Don't be fooled by the term "junk silver" – this is actual U.S. currency, with official mint marks and normal wear, but with a market price based on silver content of $107.97. Your cost, only $101.89!

The diameter is only around 1/8 inch different and gold is heavy so if I don't have one to compare to the other I can be momentarily bumfuzzled.

I think what happens is a seller brings in a full sov to a cash for gold place and the place, of course, tells them they have a half sov in an attempt to to rip them off.

So the person then sell their full sov as a half.

I followed your link, but it does not show anyway to add the item to the cart. Where on their website did you find that?

Notice there's nothing on their main page about being accredited with the BBB or any grading agencies? To me that's not a deal killer but it doesn't shed great light on them.

Exactly, like I said, it's a roll of the dice.

I figure I can afford to risk $25 for the potential pay-off. Besides, I've got paypal protection and my cc for back-up.

I thought it was pretty comical that he told some buyers that some of the items were stolen AFTER the auction completed, but the absolute best one is where he called the one buyer a moron.

What's life without a few gambles? For a petty $25 I could end up with a real nice snag. However, I'm not holding my breath. I feel that even if he does ship something it isnt going to be real gold. Now, I just play the wait & see game.

Here is some local gold in question
What type of slab is this (Never seen anything like it before)
MS 65/65 what ? >>> answering my own question (the 65/65 looks to be a grade from each side) Makes sense now.

looks like the 1/10 is rotating in the plastic.
Price is currently too high IMO at $1000 for a 1/2oz and a 1/10 oz (Im thinking $800 ) but something looks sketchy about that slab.

Those slabs are from one of those Texas bullion places like Universal Coin. Had some of the same that some 1/10th oz AGE's came in. Not really graded, just their guess at a grade. They come apart too so not even welded shut.

Not sure if this is a super deal or not, but since there seems to be a lot of interest on the board here for the first spouse coins...

Seller has a Martha Washington and Abigail Adams in NGC MS70 for $875 each:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/2007-SPOUSE-...item2ec122d280

I recently completed my summer gold buying w/a 1987 $5 Constitution Commemorative in MS70 for a little bit over spot. Wasn't a fantastic snag at $410 (I see these barely sell over spot even in 70), but it's a nice looking coin so I'm happy w/it:

Thanks for posting pedzola... As an FYI all of the 2007 spouse coins should be bought at melt or within a small percentage of melt. I've been lucky enough to score two 2007 spouses below melt after rebates/eBucks, but if you're patient and monitor eBay you'll see 2007 spouse coins for even less than you posted.

Now that spouses have been brought up in this thread I should tell you guys here that it pays to pay attention to this series (and other mint products for that matter). By buying and then selling/trading 3 spouse coins last week I wound up on the plus side to the point where I netted a free spouse coin (and one that sells for a premium ). FWIW though it will be many months (possibly even a year+) before we have another shot at an instant flip in the series. If and when that happens I'll be sure to post the news/advice/instructions in this thread to so you vultures will have a shot at easy money .

Yeah, I have a couple of the '79 Adam Smith 1/10 (.1137 AGW), and I just purchased another from '80 which should come in this week.

I've always wanted a Hayek, but I've never seen one for sale.

It went against my principle of not paying over spot for anything, but I think that these were $20 well spent

BU without question with no cleaning marks that I could find with a 10x magnifying glass. It will go to NGC with its 1936 Delaware cousin from last month as well as the XF-AU 1917 Type I Standing Liberty quarter from few months ago, as soon as I can find two more worthwhile companions for them - I may choose the BU 1947 ML Straight 7 Canadian half, but that still leave me with an open spot. Decisions, decisions ...

I think it will be a pretty nice submission when the time comes

Well damn...this is quite the deal for sterling. Snagged 5.37 troy ounces of sterling (which equals to 4.96 of .999 silver) for $100.75. That equals out to paying silver at spot price of $20.31

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/261085471246...84.m1439.l2649

Silver at a 31% discount and I get $2.02 in Ebay bucks

What do you do with scrap sterling? Sell it to a refiner, get it made into .999 bars, or something else?

What I actually do is send my stuff out to the refiner and get .999 bars in return. The refiner takes 10% of the .999 silver contained in the package as part of their refining fees. They then discount another 4% to account for melt loss when making the bars and I have to pay $1.50 per ounce that I want turned into .999 bars, this is basically the casting fees.

So for example, I just bought the above sterling lot which contains 4.96 ounces of .999 silver. Discount 14% of the silver contained and that brings the total ounces to 4.26 ounces. Lets say that I want 4 ounces back in .999 bars. That will be $6 for the casting fees which will bring my total ounces to just over 4 ounces when all the fees are taken into account.

I paid $100.75 for the entire lot so after everything is said and done I managed to get silver at around $25/ounce

My strategy which as worked rather well is to get sterling at a 20% discount. I know 14% will go to fees plus whatever else for casting so that is why I allow myself a 6% cushion for the rest. I may not get silver way below spot but it basically works out under spot. For those looking to accumulate silver it is worth a shot...It requires a little bit of work by looking on Ebay and locally but silver under spot is always nice

Some good luck and some bad luck lately.

1915 Ducat for $151 - Canceled by seller, said wife shipped to wrong address, but refunded my money.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/320961676398

2012 1/4oz AGE for $402 - No contact from seller, no tracking, and I see someone already negged her for fraud. I knew I shouldn't have even bothered, seeing how she's some fat woman trying to sell her used shoes to men with foot fetishes.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/300764041097

So bad luck for the great buys, shocking.

But this arrived, Cook Islands $50 (.0863 AGW) for $118.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/230833172766

And this shipped Monday via Registered Mail, 1994 Canada WW2 Commemorative (.25 AGW) for $400.
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/160863612480

Unfortunately, I'll soon have $551 that will buy even less gold since it's moved up a bit this week. But dems da problems with ebay I suppose.

Just before the blow-out I've purchased these Canadian sets and got them yesterday. It works to about $23/oz for everything including 4 1990 1 oz ML, 4 1976 sterling silver coins (very liquid to sell at spot), 4 proof dollars in .925 and 5 proof dollars in .500 - unfortunately all of them doubles in my collection, so I guess they will go to Provident soon ...

    Pretty decent snag.

To follow up on Bemac's scam report, there looks to be a new scam around on Ebay. Not quite sure about the exact details on how it works, but I can tell you that it ended up with Paypal/Ebay refunding me directly after they got tricked into closing the case WITHOUT seller actually refunding ....

Here is the item in discussion, the seller looks like a real sweetheart, the negs keep on piling

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/290755375315

    1. Immediately after purchase he refunded me $1 - it seemed weird but, aw well, I am not complaining about a discount ... The refund goes through fine
    2. Then few days after he tells me that he would not ship the coin (it was lost/stolen/the dog ate it) so I should file a dispute for not received to get my money back. Done ...
    3. He then allegedly refunds me the $759 balance and Ebay/Paypal closes the dispute; but he does not have enough money in Paypal or he refunded via e-check and cancelled ASAP (Ebay/Paypal CSRs gave me contradictory info here), so the money never gets refunded. But the case is still closed so I am SOL Looks like the $1 partial refund that WENT through was the key, the Ebay/Paypal system sees that one first and does not look at the refund for the balance - pretty nasty loophole
    4. I get mad and call Ebay/Paypal, get them into looking at this so they refund me directly (I still keep the Ebay bucks, plus a courtesy coupon )

    So guys, Caveat emptor!

Nasty, for sure. Glad it's over. I was scammed once. It took a few weeks to get it resolved but felt a lot longer. And no courtesy coupon. Overall eBay has been pretty stingy as far as that goes (in my experience) so good work on that at least!

So what does it take to be REAL gold "hoor" ? I would say most certainly you have to have real gold "hoor" coins Now delving into semantics and linguistics "hoor" seems to have a common root with "houri" , see

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houri

for details; it may be noted a slight parallelism to the vulgar English word with a similar pronunciation, sometimes used in this forum relating to the most avid, crazed gold bugs

So accordingly in order to establish yourself as a REAL gold "hoor" you better have REAL gold "hoor" coins, or in this case "Houris" gold coins. For the peanut gallery, so you can still follow me, that means Ottoman (Turkish) gold coins, coins that a Houri would be proud to own

But to take the laurels you really need also to get a REAL gold "hoor" snag on them too So here, without further ado, I present you my latest snags, two 100 Kurush gold coins.

OK, they are not Ottoman Empire, but Modern Turkey, but that's close enough for gubirmint work

100 Kurush 1942-2010 0.917 Gold 0.2068 oz. AGW Series: Monnaie de Luxe Obv: Head of Atatürk left within circle of stars, wreath surrounds Rev: Country name and date in ornate monogram within circle of stars, floral border surrounds

Real large, thin coins, even more than the 4 ducats; I've checked them OK for both weight/size as well as gold content

And by my math, after rebates, I've paid no more than $1190/oz. So now, please tell me, who is the REAL gold "hoor" around here ? Take that Irons

You guys brag too much. Here's some silver to counter the gold snags. Grabbed these out of a lot of around 100 ounces that I bought for $27.50/toz or so (before the jump). Couple lunars, camel art rounds, and a 1985 fractional liberty trade silver round by JM. Not sure what the frac is worth, but I've never seen one before. Seen the full ouncers, but not a fractional. And I've been around the block a few times too. Camels aren't especially rare, but I still like em.

I't pretty unbelievable what some people are willing to pay for those damned lunars too. Full ounce lunars are worth around $80. Here's an auction, $100 for that half ounce mouse in my picture. Nuts! lol

I'm surprised he's still using his MD. Probably upgrade to a dredge next year and start his own reality show. "The gold is in the river, we just got to go git it" ~hoffman

If I find an area that has enough Gold I will dredge it with a shovel and floating sifter.

A guy in Chicago found over 30 gold items in 3 days off of one beach doing that. Next question?

Where are you located? Ever think to MD a river like the mississippi, especially now that it's high and dry? I'm sure there's tons of crap you'd have to sift through, but it's such an important area for commerce, there has to be some goodies, right?
