I plant & eat garden each year, but potatoes are so cheap, I just have a hard time forcing myself to deal with them.
This spring, more out of guilt than anything else (and after reading a couple of potato threads here) I put in a late row.
I figured come societal collapse & all we'll at least have some cheap carbs if there are no potatoes in the stores...
Come Fall, I just use the riding mower with bagger to collect the leaves that the Maple trees drop & toss them over the potato row.
Along with some grass clippings, the mixture was still a little warm today as i pulled the compost aside & dug up the tubers.
Admittedly, we've had a mild winter so far without a hard freeze.
In the past I've covered the row with plastic weighted down with bricks & pulled out nice potatoes in the spring.
Frankly, I would have probably not bothered today digging them out, but the wife unit was grousing how I forgot to buy a 10lb bag when i was out shopping today.
She's my sweetie!
