Hey Irons, you better get your machine checked. From what I hear, there's WAAAYYYY more gold than silver, if you're finding that much silver and no gold, your Garrett must have a malfunction...![]()

Hey Irons, did you catch the new show on the History Channel last night called "DIGGERS"? Right up your ally. I had no idea that old civil war bullets were fetching $35 to $70. A dang Civil War uniform button with the armor insignia brought over $100. They also found silver and copper coin and a ring or two. Looks like it will be regular show on Tuesday nights/
Irons (02-29-2012)
Heard about the show but didn't see it, I doubt our antenna gets the history channel.
Civil war stuff is huge for relic hunters on private property.
My area had the French and Indian war and many early fur trapper and tribal battles.
I'm not looking for any of that stuff now, maybe someday.

I've been wavering back and forth on which model to get, and whether to get new or used. I typically prefer new unless I know the person who is selling the used equipment and why (lost interest is what I'm looking for).
I hear folks are very happy with the Garret 250, but then tackling ground with the Pro that goes deeper than most other devices is very appealing to me. Also, since I plan on doing a river that saw much 1812 War action, the Pro would be a must.
*sigh*
Alright, I'm making the call tomorrow and ordering an AT Pro package.
*sigh*
Pics will follow of the slaw I drag up, as well as the nails, and the pull tabs (I do intend on assembling a comprehensive collection), and the bottle tops, and other junk.
My LCS does have a few people who bring in stuff from dirt fishing, but only one person is somewhat of a regular. I do find this encouraging.

The AT Pro is big medicine, you'll love it.
Takes time to learn it but damn it's a killer machine and I haven't even got it wet yet. Now I mainly listen to it in pro mode and look at the screen less than I used to.
The sweet sweet sound of a silver coin hit is a beautiful thing, it's higher pitched than any other coin even clads.
I herd it for the first time a week ago.
Snow again for the weekend around here......
We expect stories and pic's!
May you dig endless Gold! ~![]()

Got over to the old park for about 10 minutes before it started raining fire and salt and found this wierd pull tab.
I find hundreds of 1970's era pull tabs but nothing like this one. Anybody know how old it is?
EDIT: Got a reply on another forum, this stupid pull tab may be worth up to $200
Looks like the two-piece tab like used on the steel canned Slim-Fast drinks....
They were from the early 60's.
They were used on old steel Schlitz beer cans among others. They were called zip-tabs because with the raised edges (and the angled can top) they could be pulled off without using your fingernail. You could just use the tip of your finger. Zippy....as it were.
They were only made a few years and unbelievable they are collectable. $10-$200

Seems there is now going to be a show with (extreme) metal detecting:
http://www.spike.com/press/shows/american-digger/
It's on the Spike network up here starting on the 23rd. Could be interesting. I'm getting my intro into the hobby by my wife's ex's father. Since none of his sons seem to be interested, and he and I get along, he's taking me out to show me how to do it. I know he's good by the 3 small boxes of gold and silver rings and binders of old coins (many of them silver).
Can't wait till the ground thaws.![]()

Back at the beaches and the ice is finally off the swimming areas. Now it's a race to MD these hard before they raise the water back up.
Lots of coins and jewelry at this place and of course pounds of junk and can slaw.
Silver comes out of the ground looking rough as you can see by the rings and ear rings but Gold, Baby,
that comes out looking like Gold!
The ring is a tiny 10k.![]()
Note the almond Snickers, I swear by those to keep the energy up!

Irons,
Thanks for the photos. Looks like a gorgeous place to spend the day.
For now I will metal detect vicariously through your thread.
If I started, I don't think I could quit.
I do however, prefer the original Snickers. I hate how they have cut the king size into 2 pieces.
What's the point in that?![]()
Irons (03-11-2012), TheMadHatter (03-11-2012)
Say Irons, On the PM River just south of Custer Michigan there was a big battle in 1648 when the invadeing Ottawa Indians whiped out the native Muskegan Indians. They then put their skulls up on poles lining the riverbanks for a half mile. There is a old bronze monument there on the west road cut just south of the bridge. You should go there and detect sometime. It would be only a half hour's drive southwest for you.[about an hour's drive north for me]

Silver chain at another beach today!![]()
Man .925 looks rough after being under water for several years, no wonder I prefer Gold. Tons of clad at this beach too.
I'm debating doing the tin foil baking soda hot water trick on this necklace or leaving it black.
Weighs 15.5 grams and it's easy to see why they lost it.![]()
Nobody has ever metal detected any of these beaches I have been hitting, I'm about positive of that now.

I'm lucky here in MI, most places are wide open to detecting. There are some restrictions in some state parks here but thats about it.
There may be other laws in the cities but WTF would I want to go to any of them? They come up here and lose thier stuff!
Other states I have read are a cluster **** of laws, restrictions and permits.
Piss on em, I would go anyway.
