    ~ I FOUND A SILVER ATHENA/PEGASUS PENDANT!!!!! ~

I have to look this one up, I don't know if it's old or a modern copy or what.

I found it on a Lake Michigan beach next to a washed out creek bed.

Weighs 7.2 grams and is marked .925

I also found clad, junk jewelry and a expensive Penn/ugly stick half a fishing pole!

I wish I would have found the reel sooner, Penns are expensive as heck, I could have sold it on ebay.

Some charter boat captian is probably still pissed about that one!!

Thanks Hatter and Superjoe! Getting in the water is going to really up the finds for me.
It takes some practice and generally is a pain in the ass but getting wet eliminates 90% of other MD'ers.

You should have seen my wife rolling on the beach laughing as I was trying to dig 4 feet of fishing pole/reel
out of the sand waist deep in cold lake Michigan getting hit by waves.

    But I got it!

She is emailing me pics she took, I'll add them later.

Heres me in the creek bed I found it in and better photos of the pendant.

When your wife said to go pound sand she didn't mean it literally.

Aren't you supposed to be in the creek with a pan?

Reading this thread is really giving me the itch to get back out there with the MD. You seem to be in a particularly target-rich environment.
Ineptocracy (in-ept-o-cra-cy)—a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.

There ain't hardly any other treasure hunters around here my good man, the few there are are in the cities.

Treasure hunting involves getting off the couch. That don't happen often in MI.

    Irons,

Seeing your pendant find reminded me of a useful tool that could help you find information about an unknown item (assuming you had a picture of said item). It is called google reverse image search. Just go to google.com, and click on the "image" search on the left hand side of the page. Now you will have to click on advanced search, and set your search filter to "off". Now go back to the google image search page, and there should be a little camera icon at the far right hand side of the search bar. Click on the camer icon, and you will be able to upload a picture of whatever item you want to search for. Google will then search for other images in its database that match or are similar to the picture you uploaded. This is very helpful if you have a picture of an item, but don't have any other info.

I believe turning the search filter to the "off" setting is what triggers the camera icon to appear. If you can't get it to pop up let me know and I will figure out what it is.

I just gave this a test-run, and I think they need to work on this further.

But thanks for the tip, may come in handy some day.

The newest coin I have found there is a 1973, many many wheat cents and nickels from the 40's - 50's. (fingers crossed)

Here is my latest old coin hotspot, Yep the old village water works!

This little fella and the foot bridge next to it are both on the 1897 platt map for my township.

They were so proud of this in 1911 it's on old postcards I found on ebay, which gave me the idea to hunt it.

Still township property so its fair game. From the stuff I'm finding it was a creekside hangout for many, many years. Now its deserted.

Old rusted jack knives with the wood sides rotted off, little cast metal cars, metal jacks, bottle top foils, buttons etc.

Some old bottle caps but hardly any pulltabs. Pulltabs werent around until 1963. Lots of junk in the ground so its slow going.

Found a pile of copper pennies and nickels and dimes tonight before the bugs drove me out.

I'm hoping one or two more silver coins are possible here and hopefully more old coppers.

Spot on brother Andial, I hunt the old fairground in the town over from me but the one here is on private property now and the old coot ain't friendly.
    To anybody!

There are a few other folks with beepers in my neck of the woods and he won't let any of us in there.

    Ah well maybe someday!

When we get to low summer water levels I'm in that creek with my beeper, there will be old coins galore in there.

Old race tracks. I'd give something that belonged to Budfox to dig at Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Right after this years event I'm going to try for doing some covert sweeps of "The Coke Lot". Area of about 400 acres where IMS parks the race traffic.

There has to be some good stuff there. If you collect enough pop tabs it's gotta be worth something? Right?

(or are we hauling all of those up to michigan to sprinkle on the beaches come fall?)

Thanks, Dave. That gave me a good laugh.
Ineptocracy (in-ept-o-cra-cy)—a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.

As I have only begun to sway my stick in anger, I have found pop tabs to be disproportionate to actually finding anything.
However, consider the glorious moment of Budfox discovering a well secreted stash of pop tabs. Behold his wretchedness as he raises his fist to the sky and shouts "IRONS!"

Irons, I thought you were a Gold Hoor. What's with you, digging for silver dimes and copper pennies?

This is where you need to take your metal detector... should be plenty of gold rings, lockets, etc...

Spot seems a little excessive, my friend. You could buy 90% all day long at spot without searching and digging. You are pretty much offering a service. I'd offer spot minus 50%.

Offering spot is a way to get at virgin dirt and possible rare coins I would otherwise have no chance of finding.

It would be worth it to me as a hunter, almost all public dirt has seen a metal detector and most yards have not.

Every time I drive by these local neighborhoods filled with houses built in the early 1900's, I think there's a gold mine under their grass. I used to live in one built in 1903, IIRC, but back then I was more interested in beer and pot than gold and silver.

    Irons,
I have a question for you. Should I dig at every hit? I believe you mentioned gold would be across the board. What say you?
No don't dig iron signals unless you are relic hunting or looking for curms buried soup can stash.

What signals I dig depends on where I'm at. On a beach or in the water I dig every signal above the iron range, every stinking one.

Its very tiring I can only do that for around 3-4 hours straight.

In the old parks I hunt I tend to just dig coin signals most of the time, on my AT Pro thats 48-54 for nickels, 75 for zinc and 81+ for clad, copper and silver.

Gold will come in almost every time in the nickel range on whatever machine you are using.

Also in trashy parks I'll dig any solid signal from 45 up. If it ain't jumpy at all odds are it ain't a pop tab or foil. Most of the time.

Rings and ear rings come in all flippin' over the mid ranges no matter what they're made of.

Good luck, trust your equipment and may you dig endless Gold.

There is under some of them. The right mint mark on a common old coin can be worth hundreds or more.

Before air conditioning, fans and teevee folks hung around in the shade or breeze. Laundry hung outside to dry.

The house with the big backyard and lots of shade trees had a lot of activity for many many years.

Friend of mine taking me out next Tuesday to show me how to use a metal detector (he has been using one for decades). While thinking about how to get started with this new hobby I intend to take up, I was looking at the Lee Valley catalog and found some interesting tools that might come in handy:

I use a Lesche digger. They are simple and very tough. Thats cool as heck you have somebody who knows what they are doing taking you MD'ing.

Man the time that would save for a beginner! I'm the only fool I know who does this so I'm all research, trial and error.
Best of luck to you and take notes!!

So many of you may remember that I was going to an area here in Germany that has a abandoned hotel. I didnt find much but today was a big winner. I went out to the field behind my apartment were kids from high school practice all the time. I think i was searching for about 2 hours or less and check out my haul....

2 clad quarters, 2 dimes, and 2 nickels. The find of the day was a 27.5 gram silver necklace that was sitting at abound 2 inches down. I tested it with my silver acid and it turned a dark red color which indicates silver. The chain and cross registered an ID in the 80s BTW

Upon closer look with my microscope there is a hallmark of what looks to be the head of an eagle and the numbers 835 below it

Upon closer look with my microscope there is a hallmark of what looks to be the head of an eagle and the numbers 835 below it
Thats what I'm talking about!! Sweet find Manny, Nice chunk of free silver!!! I bet you're hooked on treasure hunting now.

    Here's a place to check silver hallmarks ~ http://www.925-1000.com/

I did a bunch of research Saturday around a (now) small Lake Michigan coast town that was established in 1845 and was roaring 100 years ago.

Not much there now except all the parks are still there along with rich folks cottages and beautiful beaches.
May you dig endless Gold and big chunks of silver!! ~

Thanks man...one silver chain closer to paying off the metal detector. I checked for hallmarks but none match. I found a couple of other hallmarks on the chain and cross. The first one seems to be a hallmark of a bird. The second one is the Eagle and the third one looks to be a hallmark with the letter "J", a crescent moon to the upper left and what looks to be a templar's cross.

If anyone can shed more light on these hallmarks that would be greatly appreciated and will give more info on the time period of the chain and cross. I think they are fairly modern pieces but the hallmarks and the 835 marks seem to me like they could be older jewelry pieces
