You may laugh or scoff when you see an old man on the beach using his metal detector, but there have been some pretty incredible finds over the years.

The first recorded use of the metal detector was in 1881, when Alexander Graham Bell tried to find a bullet lodged in President James A. Garfield's chest. It became a little more prevalent in the 1920's before being fairly widely used during World War II.

The modern metal detector was first widely distributed in the 1960's and was originally used by the military to find land mines (it's still used this way today). Now it's used in airports around the world for security purposes and anyone can purchase one to look for lost relics.

Here are some of the best finds in history:

In 1977, a California man found a 4.9 kg gold nugget with 132 pieces of gold inside of it. It was later known as The Mojave Nugget and is the largest piece of gold ever found.
In 1980, an English man was searching in an Irish bog and found a gigantic gold chalice studded with amber along with its accompanying tray and strainer, the Ottawa Citizen reported.
In 1989, an Australian man found a 12-inch long gold nugget shaped like a boot. They named it Boot Of Cortez after the famous Spanish explorer. It sold in an auction in 2008 for over $1.5 million, the Post Chronicle said.
In 2007, a father and son metal detecting team in England found an ancient Viking treasure trove of silver and gold worth over 750,000 pounds, the Daily Mail reports.
In 2007, a 78-year-old English man found a Roman coin used in 155 BC from the time where England was a Roman territory. It was truly the find of a lifetime, the local South Devon paper reported.
In 2008, an English man found an Anglo-Saxon 18 carat gold cross that experts say dates back to the 7th century, the UK Daily Telegraph reports.
In 2009, an English man found an ancient Anglo-Saxon collection of 1,500 pieces of gold and silver, CNN reports. Over 11 pounds of gold and 5.5 pounds of silver were found.
In 2009, a Scottish man went into a field and found a set of gold Iron Age necklaces worth over $2 million, UPI reports. The necklaces were amazingly in perfect condition
This past June, a Swiss gardner was tending to a lawn when he found 10 gold bars worth a total of $126,000, Huffington Post reported. He gets to keep the bar if it isn't claimed within five years.
Also this past June, a 52-year-old historian was walking through St. Helens when he unearthed a bronze age axe head that dates back to 1800 BC, according to the Liverpool Echo.
Just last week, a 13-year-old New Mexico boy found a two-pound meteor in the ground that had been buried for 10,000 years, the LA Times says.
How does a metal detector work? In short, a transmitter current attached to a wire inside the metal detector, and the coil of that wire creates a magnetic field around the detector. This magnetic field will cause an electric current to go through the wire if it passes over anything metallic, which produces a current into the coil. That current is processed and that beeping noise you hear automatically sounds.

Hit a few places on Lake Michigan today and I couldn't find a place that wasn't sanded in until around 1 pm.

By then the waves were well up and beating the snot out of me. That lake is a royal b*&#h!!!

Now that I found targets I'll be there @ 6 am tomorrow, should be a great area its right off a busy family oriented campground!

Lovely Lady Lake Michigan pounds me for 2 days then gives me a prize!!!

And what a prize my heaviest chunk of Gold to date, 7.6 grams of 14k. That puts me about 3 grams over 1 oz of free Gold so far this year!

I was going to get a pic of it with the gravel in my scoop but some people came. So I just took a pic of the water.

You never let anybody see gold or sparkle, never.

I checked the park lost and found but nothing there, I'm not suprised it was likely lost years ago by how deep it was under the sand.

I also found a lot of green coins and even a few wheat pennies, great day in the big lake. I freakin' love this hobby!!

    FINALLY!!!

The stone is an old untreated blue Zircon, probably English? in origin. The gem guy cannot say for sure with out a specific gravity test but thats what it looks like to him.

Cool, lesson here is don't take the first opinion on stuff and strictly diamond folks are pretty much full of shlt.

    Irons,
What is the diameter of the zircon? If you don't mind measuring and posting that data.

No problem I'm picking it up this afternoon and I'll measure it with my calipers. It looks to be right around 1 ct.

Still a Good Find Irons Zircon is an important jewelry gemstone which is sometimes confused with the cheap and ubiquitous synthetic stone known as cubic zirconia. Of course the two are totally distinct in their chemistry, optical properties and origins. Zircon is a natural material (zirconium silicate) which is found in Cambodia, Burma and Sri Lanka as well as in Brazil, Australia and East Africa. Colorless when pure, zirconium silicate takes on various shades due to impurities. The brilliance and fire of this gemstone makes it very popular and it is attractively priced in comparison with many other fine gems. The wide variety of colors of zircon, its rarity, and its relatively low cost make it a popular collector's stone. Collectors enjoy the search for all possible colors and variations. Zircon is also a favorite of gemologists and geologists for its unique properties.

The prices and value of fine zircon vary depending on the size and quality of the gemstone. Blue is the most popular zircon color, followed by honey, red and white. Green zircon, resulting from the effects of natural radioactivity, is rare. In blue zircon, look for a saturated blue. Clean gems in large sizes are especially valuable.
No matter how slow you go, you are still lapping everybody on the couch.

Zircon is also very hard but brittle. That explains why there are no scratches but there is a chip in the top.

All in all its not worth much but I had the feeling it wasn't fake.

It is really beautiful with all its colors firing different colors in different types of lights.

Way prettier than any diamond I have ever seen.

Measured between the prongs it looks to be .210 diameter at its widest.

Depth I'm not sure it comes to a point almost to the bottom of the setting.

I wish I was better at taking pics as this thing just smokes a diamond in person. Its a different color in every light.

    Thank you Irons,

From just the diameter, my best guess will be ~1 carat in weight.

I'm not sure if I mentioned this or not but I find a lot of bizarre non-metallic stuff in my scoop that comes up with a target.

I'm pretty sure I found a human humerus bone last weekend in a drowned river mouth lake, I looked it up when I got home.

I tossed it back and gave it a little salute. There were lots of settelers and indians in that area many many years ago.

I find a lot of old glass marbles too. Other stuff.

Indians? Settlers? More likely someone that crossed the wrong person and had a 'boating accident'.
More than gold sleeps with the fishes.

Sources have that stone, if it is a zircon, at about $12-$15 retail.
But if you feel it's pretty, the price isn't much concern.

Could be a fish sleeper, hard to say. Place is old and I'm sure many old graves have washed into that river.

Major logging in the late 1800's, French and Indian war, tribal wars, Father Marquette was through there exploring.

Meh, I just wish the spirit well and carry on.

Make sure you pull the rings off. If you start posting pictures of gold teeth, well...then we know they were rich settlers.

Lol don't confuse honest treasure hunters with archaeologists, those folks are ghouls.

They lobby to pass laws to stop us from finding dropped coins and jewelry, and those sick bass turds look for dead people to dig up.

EDIT: I should get a waterproof hatcam. I think you fine folks would get a grin from some of the stuff that comes up in the scoop and my reactions to it.

Theres a lot of WTF?'s and some Yeah!'s and when I dipped a 2 foot eel out of a river and he went ballistic before getting out I fricken screamed like a little girl.

all kidding aside, when I started digging my little honey hole area I have mentioned..my buddy told me if I headed south about a half mile away..I would come to the banks of White River..and that there are alot of Indian burial mounds along that portion of the River..Not sure if that's true or not!, but I have stayed clear of that area..Figure that's the last thing I want to dig up

Same thing in the Grand River that runs through Grand Rapids. Fishermen occasionally hook old skulls, freak out and call the police.

The police are pretty much used to it, when I lived down there I never hooked one but I knew folks who did and they just threw them back.

The military used to send me up to Grayling Mi alot to help train Army units..I always thought that would be a Great area to metal detect..Old logging town and camps..been to Traverse City a few times have always wondered about that area with all the old resorts? If I ever get up that way again..might have to throw the detector in the car and check things out..

Without giving too much away, in Northern MI you want to look where people played back in the day, not so much where they worked.

The old resorts would be a treasure trove of old coins well preserved in sandy soil. If you can get permission to get in one.

Yeah that's the hardest part about this little hobby..is getting permission...I have been trying to get permission to check a certain area here in town..after next month...the backside of the area was a Civil War Camp during the war.but so far no such luck!

I found this little mangled Gold ring in a swimming hole last Sunday along with the required junk, .999 earring and clad.

Its marked 10k but it didn't feel right so I just figured it was junk. Coin guy tested it today and its 10k!

He said its probably pretty old and wasn't the highest quality to begin with but its Gold. .7 grams

A major storm just lashed the crap out of one of my Lake MI coastal haunts with 70+ mph winds hopefully causing a ton of beach erosion!

    I'll be there Saturday morning......

6 hours in Lake Michigan today and no gold. Sigh.

On a good note the scenery is freaking incredible!

Lake Michigan this morning Sunday Aug 5. A-hem, not going out there today.

Miss Michigan has ways of letting you know who's in charge.

I hunted the dry sand a bit instead and found clad, junk and a pretty little silver ring with a light orange stone in it.

There was a little girl around 6 years old with the prettiest long brown ponytail and big blue eyes walking with her Dad and I gave it to her.

She was thrilled, her Dad shook my hand and all was well with the world.

Hope your Sunday went as well as mine did!

    Can feel your pain Irons.

Hit the 1825 house basement today. Small building. 18 ft. by 22 ft. He found an Indian head penny on the floor, so I am hoping there is something more. Owner said he would split right down the middle if I found anything. Gave him the full aluminum pie pan that I found. There has been a lot of silt washed into it, so I was thinking of screening a foot or two to try to sift some stuff out. I re-sided the outside, so I would probably find nails galore. If I only had the patience. sigh

Was out looking for a property pin the other day and a lady who saw me at the beach prospecting was walking by with her dog. Asked me what I was looking for. When I told her I was looking for my property pin she said it finds that too. I told her, "Yup. It finds every metal thing, except gold."

If you keep at it you will find Gold when you least expect it.

When I first started hunting beaches when there was still ice on the water I had hiked back into this park several times just to dig up clad coins, mountains of junk, fish lures, pop tabs, sinkers etc.

I was on my last corner of the swim area they rope off for the summer. There I was, tired, sore, hungry and cursing the idiot who invented pop tabs, the a@@hole who invented bottle caps, the sons of motherless goats who throw this stuff in the water, the effing moron who invented my metal detector and myself for buying such a piece of shlt thinking it would find anything but junk.

After flipping the last shovelful of sand to get the last goddam pop tab I would ever dig up, there in the morning sunlight sat a small Gold ring with a diamond in it. OMFG!!!!

I had just bonded with every lunatic treasure hunter in the history of the world. Me and Indiana Jones.

Nothing will ever be the same again.

    Ready for cold water!

I have been getting my fall and spring cold water gear together slowly and now I got it, I like planning ahead.

Snagged a slightly used NRS extreme relief dry suit off ebay for dirt cheap, like new and $550 off! Major snag.

7 mil neoprene dive boots with zipper sides, I've got insulated neoprene gloves.

Now I can stroll in the water up to my neck wearing sweats, MD'ing, and not get wet. Life is good.

Wait till next year folks. He'll have a freaking barge and one of the diving suits with the brass fish bowl helmet. Mrs. Irons will be workin' the damn compressor.
I calls 'em as I sees 'em. No "sugar coating" here.

Anyway, like I was sayin', gold is the fruit of the lake shore.
You can detect it, scoop it, clean it, weigh it, sell it. There's uh,
gold wedding rings, gold earrings, gold class rings, there's gold
engagement rings, gold friendship rings, gold...
    Welcome to Omerica! AGAIN!

Yep, I'm glad you ladies had your good laugh at my bunny suit but look at this.

Lake Michigan turned over Wednesday night so water temps at the beaches were 82-85 and are now around 65 degrees.
    Overnight.

August 10 and too cold to swim in for very long, much less stroll around in for a few hours.

My list of competitors just got really really short.

By Sunday the competition will be nonexistent, you'll lose another 10°-15°.

Thanks man, what an awsome chart!

Looks like mid 50's by Saturday morning, the first camper to take a morning dip is going to have a hell of a suprise!

Ah yes, now I can take my time and gather up a seasons worth of golden donations.

7 mil neoprene dive boots with zipper sides, I've got insulated neoprene gloves.

Now I can stroll in the water up to my neck wearing sweats, MD'ing, and not get wet. Life is good.
