Gold Hoors MUTILATE classic silver coinage?? For SHAME!!![]()
You did it on purpose, I know it!Just ignore the digger on the rim of the dime, I knew I had silver down there and was careful but still hit it.
I felt awful that I hit it. Coins are very hard to pinpoint when they are on thier sides like this one was.
I knew the target was silver but I couldn't find the damn thing. Chipping it out of dry adobe didn't help.
I actually dug a hole next to it and past it and had to back off and find it in the side of the hole.
Ah well, Hopefully I never do that to a rare coin and even with a gouge it's better off than being lost in the ground forever.![]()

If anyone can shed more light on these hallmarks that would be greatly appreciated and will give more info on the time period of the chain and cross. I think they are fairly modern pieces but the hallmarks and the 835 marks seem to me like they could be older jewelry pieces
Hi Rodzm,
Great find. Right in your back yard too. There's silver in them there fields.
The website Irons mentioned is a good reference site. I use it quite often to identify Sterling pieces.
I couldn't make out what the makers mark is from the pictures. The 835 purity mark is probably of Belgium origin or a country in that area. Look under World Marks heading. Most jewelery is marked with a fineness mark and if it has a makers mark, it is even better. Still you would have to find a buyer that would want it for the maker, so it in reality is probably worth... cut to a commercial... we're back. The piece is probably worth scrap.

Went out last night with my friend who was showing me the detector ropes. An older park outside of the city with picnic areas, ball diamonds and hiking trails. A lot of bottle caps and pull tabs, but he did come up with one coin (which turns out is silver)

Not been out in a while but had a nice day on Sunday.
Here is a pic of the better finds from then.
Found my first cannonball even though it's small I was well happy.
Plus a nice hammered silver coin, Edward 1st Penny (1272 to 1307).

Man, great finds, thanks for sharing them here! It would really be a treat to find coins that old, I can only imagine what that would be like.
Around here in Michigan breaking into the 1800's is a pretty good accomplishment for a treasure hunter, you have to work for it. I have been researching towns established on the shores of Lake Michigan near me as those areas were used well before the inland cities. Some were very wealthy in thier time.
Finding a 1700's coin is possible but not likely.
My top two coins I would really love to find are a US Gold coin (any) and a French and Indian War era silver coin.
Even if I do find them, I'll keep looking.![]()

Hi you fine folks, I'm on vaca and hitting the beaches and swimming holes. So far a standing liberty quarter 1917, a '39 merc, a '54 roosie and 2 gold rings. Just found a gold ring today with 2 diamonds and a honkin' light blue star sapphire.
I'm going to try to hide that one from Mrs Irons but I'm guessing she will have it in hours not days.
I'm going to get a few pic's up in a day or so as I have to find wifi spots and lurk in the parking lot.![]()

Irons, would you please quit it with all these metal discoveries! Leave them be! You're flooding the friggin market!
Irons (06-01-2012)
Well summer is here, and the boys are out of school for the summer so it is time to go north for the first hunt with metal detector. Seeing as I have been afflicted with the "Irons Disease" I will try to embrace my condition and cope with the symptoms.
Updates to come, with virgin high target environments I hope to bring some new pics to the group.
Happy hunting everyone.![]()
Whoop! Went to the library to get some internet.
OK so some of the places I researched were busts, some loaded with coins but mostly late 60's 70's and 80's.
So I had the location as unhunted correct just the time period wrong. Gotta remember anybody with a beeper nowdays is competing with 35 years of other folks with beepers who possibly there first.
Then this beach, freaking Bingo. 100 year old virgin.
Nice place huh? Plunder at will! The beaches and picnic area were swept clean, in the water was untouched.
I don't include clad but there were piles of it. Wheaties are cool though. Silver is 1917 standing liberty type 1 no mintmark, 1943 quarter, 1954 roosie and a 1939 merc. The odd coin is a 1969 Swiss 1/2 franc. WTF was that doing on a northern MI beach?![]()
Ah yes the Gold! The big ring I have no idea what that is except its so worn you can't even make out what design it's supposed to be. No k marking inside the rim, heavy as heck probably 10+ grams. The womans ring I lost as soon as I got home is a 10k marked white gold with 2 bitty diamonds and a blue star sapphire. Nice ring has some weight and a stunning stone.
Some of the assorted junk that came up with almost every scoop. Old glass, huge square nails and spikes, brass shotgun shells, buttons, Manistee and NE railroad tokens, buckles, junk jewelry etc the place is like a time capsule.
If you have never seen Northern Lake Michigan it is truly stunning. When it ain't frozen.

Thanks! Yeah I like finding all the old stuff too. I have a bag of square nails and brass odds and ends from that place. It's not cleaned out I just got the easy targets. Going slow and picking through the iron signals will yield more coins.
I'm heading to a township park on a lake today that looks like it was the place to be 50 years ago. A falling down rotting cabana/changing area, stone benches and cement paths all grown over and forgotten about.
Pretty sand beach though. Should be great for coins unless it's been cleaned out by a previous beeper wielder!![]()

Good going Irons. It must feel great finding those silver coins.
Irons (06-05-2012)
So I'm at the beach today finding clad almost every step in the water, nothing old and silver but fun as hell on a beauty of a Tuesday morning. Loons are swimming around me, suns coming up.
Then I got a hard silver signal and pulled up a freakin' Cubic Zirconia explosion.
Let me tell you fine folks, you just ain't ready to see something like this in your scoop!!
I almost had a heart stroke, knees were shaking hard enough to put off little waves.
So I reach in and get it and it's marked 925 inside followed by "CZ".
Ah well its probably best, had it said 18k I probably would have been found floating face down in the lake somewhere.
Next time it will be for real.............Mrs Irons snagged it as soon as I came home.

I think you should get that ring back from your wife. It does look good on you.
Sounds like you are having a great time and the weather has been cooperating. Not that bad weather would have stopped you. Thanks for keeping us posted.
Beware the 18k stamp. I have found more fakes with that mark than real. Save the heart attack for after you test it.

Nice finds Irons, my trip north with the boys went south quick, too much fishing. Boys had a blst pulling in bluegills and building sand castles.
Treasure was found gold and silver will have to wait till next trip.

Irons, that blue ring is really attractive. Nice find
Of course the others are great too.I'm proud of your quick acquisition of MDing prowess. I still haven't made time to take mine out for a swing yet. I know It'll be there when things settle down so for now I'm living vicariously through you as are many others here.

So I'm in the creek after work today digging old coins. No silver yet just tons of clad, some wheat pennies and yesterday a way corroded 1881 indian head.
Then I hear a solid 40 signal, 99 times out of 100 a junk foil signal but this was a solid 40, not jumpy at all so I scooped it.
Holy Balz!!! Peeking out of the gravel is the prettiest tiny little gold band with a diamond!!!![]()
There were people around so I plucked it out and put it in my pouch's zipper pocket and went back to the pennies.
Then Mrs Irons came pedaling up and I gave her the code word Gold Jack so she knew not to ask! We talked about wheat pennies![]()
I cleaned it up, its really a delicate little thing. Weighs in a whopping 1 gram hallmarked 14KP inside.

Irons (06-12-2012)
Thanks!
If you're going to hit beaches there is one word to always remember. Erosion.
Coins, Gold and silver sink through the sand and sit on the rock, shell or gravel layer.
When waves tides or storms take away sand to expose the hard layer you will win big.
I read the book gold beneath the waves (amazon.com) and it taught me more in 2 days than years of trial and error would have.
May you dig endless Gold!![]()

Hi Irons,
Thanks for the posts. Very nice, very nice. I am still adding to my pull tab collection, but thought I would share a funny story with you all.
Nanna (my wife) told my 5 year old grandson that Grampa has a treasure finder. He insisted on putting it to use, so we went out in the front yard. He grabs right ahold of it and starts swinging it side to side. This kid loves to get his hands on stuff. He works with me sometimes. I get more work out of him than I get out of my own son.
Anyway, we find some coins, clad but coins all the same. Then we hit something that wasn't a coin. Turns out to be a piece of metal.
Ok, heres the funny part. He says, "Darn. It isn't gold"Looks like I have a prospecting partner in the making.

I just rode my KLR recon scooter over to an old county park/campground on a lake tonight and talked to the ranger lady.
There is one preserved stone building and other ruins from the 1850's scattered around the park.
I have permission to hunt the water in a large swimming area in the mornings as long as I buy a season pass and check in and out!
I'm pretty excited and hoping for the best, she said she doesn't think anybody has hunted in the water there and hole digging ain't allowed on land.![]()

All right Iron's..I've seen enough! I picked up one of these today..a Bounty Hunter..figure it will be ok for just starting out, then move up to a bigger better one if I'm successful at finding anything....
No matter how slow you go, you are still lapping everybody on the couch.

Looks like the exact bounty hunter that got me started, the bh gold digger. A pile of clad change and 2 silver rings later and I was hooked!
Do yourself a favor and get a cen tech pinpointer from harbor freight. They are the other half of your metal detector.
They allow you to find your target quickly and keep you moving way, way faster. Good luck and may you dig endless Gold!![]()

I've had decent luck with the CenTek stuff. I use their non contact thermometer, moisture meter and had used a laser level for several years in harsh conditions. Sumbitch still does it's thing-minus the use of remote control swiveling. Still cost a fraction of similar name brand models. I'll be picking one of these up for sure.

The gold digger operates on a slightly higher frequency than other entry level detectors so it will give you a clearer tone on good targets.
It will nail everything metal down to around 5-6 inches, depending on soil conditions.
When you get it put a rusty nail on the ground and turn up the trash eliminator until you don't hear it anymore, then mark the dial where it disappears.
Then put a pop top, a penny, a nickel, a dime, a quarter and a gold ring down and listen to them.
The gold ring will sound like a nickel. Now get out there and find some free Gold!!!!!![]()

I found a few clads, a junk jumbo diamond earring, another junk earring, a small cross with a stone in it that might be gold or was once gold plated. Hard to tell its crusty.
And around 4 inches of fine 925 silver chain with the clasp on it. I heard the clasp, couldn't find any more of the chain.
Pretty lake park with a very clean beach, great for kids swimming. I'll hit it again in the fall when the depositors are gone.
And I broke the arm cuff on my AT Pro!! Thats what I get for not having a back up detector.
I called Bart and ordered another Garrett before he closed @ 1 today, then I'll call Garrett monday and get a new part sent out.
In the meantime I have to figure a way to rig this up so I can use it tomorrow. Gorilla glue and sheet metal with screws may do it.![]()
