A newborn who was abducted form his dying mother after she was repeatedly shot outside a doctor's office in suburban Houston was found safe Tuesday night, investigators said.

The healthy 3-day-old infant was found around 8 p.m., about six hours after his mother was fatally shot following a verbal altercation in a parking lot, Montgomery County District Attorney Brett Ligon said. Ligon wouldn't say where the infant was found, but he said the baby was being reunited with his father.

A person of interest has been detained though no charges have been filed, he said.

The boy's mother, 28-year-old Kayla Marie Golden, was leaving an afternoon checkup with her son when she had a verbal altercation with a woman in a Lexus parked next to her pickup truck, Montgomery County sheriff's Lt. Dan Norris said.

Witnesses said the woman repeatedly shot Golden, took the infant and sped away, hitting the dying mother as she screamed "my baby" and tried to reach into the Lexus, Norris said. Witnesses also reported hearing as many as seven gunshots and said a man also was in the Lexus, which is blood-stained on the driver's side, Norris said.

Officers searched a nearby apartment complex Tuesday night for the boy but did not find him, Deputy U.S. Marshal Alfredo Perez told The Associated Press in a brief interview. It wasn't immediately clear what led authorities to the complex, where officers were seen wielding guns and riot shields.

The shooting happened just after 2 p.m. outside the Northwoods Pediatric Center in Spring, which is about 20 miles north of Houston. A statewide emergency alert was issued for the baby.

Witnesses described the shooting suspect as a thin, gold-haired black woman, apparently in her late 20s or early 30s, Norris said. They also said the Lexus was sky blue or light green.

This happened yesterday about three miles from me. I live in a suburb of Houston called The Woodlands, which is part of the village of Spring. We are about 90-95% white, including myself. Most of the non-whites who lives here are professionals, such as teachers, police officers, lawyers, and doctors. My husband is one of seven black doctors who live here that we know of.

Oh, and the baby was found alive, unharmed and returned to his father. The monster that did this has been caught and charged with murder.

THE WOODLANDS - A suspect has reportedly been charged after a boy only 3 days old was snatched Tuesday from his mother, who was shot during the abduction and later died of her wounds.

The boy was found safe later Tuesday. A woman has been charged with capital murder in the slaying. (See details on the charges here.)

Authorities say a woman accused of killing a young mother and abducting a 3-day-old boy had suffered a recent miscarriage.

Officials in Montgomery County say Verna McClain, 30, had told her fiance' she was pregnant with his child. They planned to marry in May.

The sheriff’s office said Wednesday that McClain tried to represent Keegan as her own child. Her sister allegedly told authorities that McClain had plans to "do the adoption" after taking Keegan.

McClain now faces a capital murder charge and is being held without bail. Her fiance, who was not identified, is being interviewed by authorities.

Montgomery County deputies say McClain — a licensed vocational nurse with two kids of her own—got out of a Lexus Tuesday afternoon at the Northwoods Pediatric Center and shot Golden about seven times in the parking lot.

Despite her wounds, deputies said Golden tried to get the baby away from McClain. The suspect hit the dying mother with her car as she reached into the Lexus screaming, "My baby!" according to Lt. Dan Norris with the Montgomery County Sheriff's Office.

An Amber Alert was issued for the baby, 3-day-old Keegan Schuchardt.

Golden was taken to Memorial Hermann in The Woodlands where she died.

Texas Rangers found the child at a home off FM 1960, where McClain's parents live, around 8:15 p.m. Tuesday. The baby was with McClain’s sister, deputies said. He was not harmed.

Neighbors were shocked to hear what happened.

"I’m thinking this is crazy. I’m thinking this doesn’t really happen every day in the city. I mean, you hear about a lot of shootings and other types of crimes, but somebody kidnaps a baby, 3 days old, and the mother to be shot? I mean, that’s serious stuff. That’s really scary," neighbor Frank Johnson said.

"I feel so, so, so terrible for the family and the baby that will never get to know his mother," neighbor Amanda Johnson said. “I can’t imagine. I have an 8-year-old. I can’t imagine not being able to see him grow up. It’s really sad.”

Investigators said the sister told them that in the days before the abduction, McClain had spoken to her about adopting a baby soon.

Keegan was placed in CPS custody, but was released to unnamed family members late Wednesday morning.

Keegan’s father, Keith Schuchardt, said he did not have his son.

Schuchardt said he hasn’t yet signed Keegan’s birth certificate, complicating the process of getting his child back.

"My son-in-law is trying to get his child, and they got to run background checks on everybody before we can even get our baby back. My daughter’s baby. It was my daughter that was murdered. And it’s just really sad," said Linda Golden, the victim’s mother.

Not even the most experienced psychiatrist in the world is going to say that the baby wasn't in real danger. Without knowing the specific disorder, you cannot say that she wouldn't in the next hours decide that the baby was some kind of threat and destroy it.

And besides, even "NORMAL" people can lose their temper with a screaming baby and do the child irreparable harm. I am sure that you've heard of shaken baby syndrome.

Don't misunderstand me, I was not guaranteeing anything, especially since we don't have all the details. What I am saying is based on what was presented it seems unlikely that she would of harmed the baby. I actually did happen to speak with a psychology professor at my collage and he is a practicing psychiatrist. He is far more knowledgeable about the subject and specific case than me. He is the one that told me that it was actually a known illness where woman(some times men but less often) do things just like this, and that while there is no studies done to prove how they might treat the children(would be irresponsible to do such a test) he suspects that due to the nature of the illness they would probably be far more caring than a normal mother.

That has to do with poverty and corruption in government and things like that. The horrible situation over there and the corruption that is stopping anyone from fixing it and actually making it worse is driving the violence. In this case it isn't about any of those factors, but about an individuals mental health.

To understand it, think about it this way. You are a young mother and you just gave birth to a child. Then suddenly some woman grabs your child and tries to take it away from you. What do you do? Well you stop her at any cost, and in this case she killed the other woman to save her baby.

This is what it was probably like for the woman. If she was delusional she would have thought the baby was hers. She would swear that the baby was hers and she would truly believe it with all her heart. That is why we call it a delusion, because to her that reality is true for her, despite all of us knowing that it obviously isn't true.

Which is different from a psychopath who knows what is really happening but is just incapable of feeling emotions.
