    Default Concealed Means Concealed

Over the past week we have talked a lot about concealed carry. Concealed carry means your firearm should be concealed in more ways than one.

There are two main forms of concealment. Visual and verbal. Yes there is verbal concealment of a firearm.

Verbal concealment means keeping your mouth shut about carrying a gun. This one tends to be the hardest one. Most people slip up and tell others that they carry. I know I do it. It is very hard to train yourself to never tell anyone that you carry, or that you are carrying.

Visual concealment is a complex form of concealment. Visual concealment is where your firearm is completely covered from prying eyes. When you carry concealed you should be able to stand with a group of people that are looking for your firearm, and them not see it.

Another part of visual concealment is a mix of visual and verbal concealment. This part involves not giving your self away. Even if your firearm is in deep concealment, it does you no good when your wearing things like a “got ccw?” shirt, 5.11 tactical pants, a shooting vest, or a NRA hat.

Now that we know the different forms of concealment we need to understand how we can better conceal our firearms.

First off you need to be comfortable with your carry position. When your comfortable you are less likely to do the tell tell weapons check that most do. I’m sure you’ve seen a law enforcement officer do it. When they get out of the car, they check to see if there gun is there by grabbing it. A lot of people that carry concealed do the same. This is a bad habit and we need to get out of this habit.

Secondly we need to ensure that our firearm is truly concealed form others view. NO printing, NO peaking out when you reach up, NO sticking out when you bend over, and NO shirt coming off of it when you move. Wear a larger size shirt and pants if you must. There should be no seeing your gun. And if someone bump checks you they should not know there is a gun on you.

Third you should not tell another single sole that you carry. You have already told far too many people. What if you and your friend are being robbed, you decide its better to give him your wallet than to shoot the guy. And YOUR stupid friend that YOU were STUPID enough to tell that you carry, says something like “give him your gun too”, or “shoot him I can’t afford loose my wallet”. Then you are made, you both may end up dead because you ran your mouth about a concealed subject.

When you have your firearm properly concealed you should be able to walk into an NPE or CPZ and no one know about it. I do not advise breaking the law, but if you carry a gun it will happen one day. You will miss the sign. There are many otherwise law abiding guys that carry illegally. Some because of their state laws, some because of their job. They keep their firearm concealed and do not advertise that they carry to others. If they can get away with carrying illegally you and I can get away with carrying concealed legally.

I found myself talking about it a lot the first year I was permitted, but the new soon wears off and I found myself grounded by thinking that I carried 20yrs. before the permit and I never told anyone that I was armed, seeing how I wasn’t legally carrying. I have since returned to that mindset, Now I find myself talking to others about permits and firearms and never tell one way or the other if I actually have it.

I agree with most of the article. I think the reference to 511 tactical pants and shooting vests was over the top. But the main thing to get from the article is to take CCW seriously. I would add that knowing the laws regarding CCW for your state should be the first thing to concentrate on.
