Default Spirit Air to charge up to $100 for carry-on bags

This from the same airline that wouldn't refund a dying mans ticket, because that is policy. Pretty soon they will be charging for the air you breath while sitting on their plane.

Spirit Air to charge up to $100 for carry-on bags
    By Aaron Smith@CNNMoney May 3, 2012: 3:45 PM ET

NEW YORK (CNNMoney) -- Spirit Airlines will raise its fee for carry-on bags to up to $100, becoming the first U.S. airline to charge so much for a service that most other airlines offer for free.

Spirit said on its website that the new fees apply to carry-on bags registered at the gate and will become effective Nov. 6. Until that time, Spirit will continue to charge $45.

In defense of Spirit, their base airfares are absurdly low. I mean $25 for a 500 mile flight! You'll pay more to park your car than for the actual flight.

The major carriers charge about $100 for that same flight albeit departing from the local primary airport, not the secondary one where Spirit flies from. But I prefer to fly out of that secondary airport anyway. Way less headaches and hassles.

The media often fails to mention that you can still carry on one bag for free, if it can fit under the seat in front of you.

So if you are making a quick trip for a couple of days and if you can stuff all your stuff into a small carry on bag, ya can't beat Spirit.

They need to work on their corporate image, I really have never heard a good thing about them except the price of their tickets.

Agreed. I don't think they even have a Public Relations department, in order to save the money.

Looks like they finally came to their senses over this flap they caused. I can't imagine what they were thinking when this blew out of control.

Spirit Airlines refunds money to dying man

By Elizabeth Behrman, Times Staff Writer
In Print: Saturday, May 5, 2012

Jerry Meekins will finally be getting a refund from Spirit Airlines.

Buckling after weeks of public pressure and national criticism, Spirit Airlines chief executive officer Ben Baldanza called Meekins on Friday afternoon to tell him the airline will reimburse him for a ticket he bought before he found out he would soon die from cancer.

Pickup a Flat Rate Priority Mail box at the Post Office. Fill it with your items and mail it a few days ahead of time. Works for me. Avoid paying for bags for the flight.

And there is no complimentary beverage service, even water is $3. They will give you ice cubes to suck on if you beg.
