    .38 +P
    13.5 ounces (empty)
Hogue grip with special backstrap padding
Polymer frame with special alloy cylinder
    $402 shipped from Bud's
GLOWING reviews from every reputable source

    BUT...

I never thought I'd carry a wheel gun! Primarily, I have objected to the 5-round capacity over the 10+1 of a small pocket auto 9mm like the Kel-Tec P11. Both are basically identical in size and weight, but the Ruger looks like it would print less in my pocket due to the nice curves. I'm also sure that the Ruger quality is twice that of the KT and the trigger is probably 10x as good.

Once I took my wife to the range and had her try out both the Taurus .357 (shooting .38) and the G19, and her groups were twice as tight with the Glock. This is another reason I have preferred the 9mm auto, but I've seen reviews from pros that say the Ruger LCR can shoot groups as tight as any pistol.

One nice added benefit of a wheel gun is that it doesn't spit brass (or leave brass behind, depending on how you look at it). One negative is that it isn't as easy to reload. But in a self-defense situation isn't the average about 3 shots?

I'm really tempted... it looks like I might have to add a caliber to reload...

BTW... before someone tries to recommend the similar S&W models I'll just make two things clear:

    1. I'll never buy a S&W after how they sold out to the anti-gun crowd many years ago.
    2. They are ugly. The lines don't flow, and I'd bet the Ruger would draw out of a clothes pocket much easier.

Maybe you and I can can get one by 2016 if we order today. Ruger is production backlogged so bad they stopped taking orders.

It is 1/4 pound heavier, and the recoil is punishing. I'll bet it doesn't even pack that much more punch -- just a bigger muzzle flash.

I can't decide on the Crimson Trace grip. I'm a lefty, and I don't know if my thumb would interfere with the laser. Besides, $200 is a steep price for a laser sight.

It will shoot 38's too and the extra weight may make the 38's more tolerable. My friend has the SW version and he rarely shoots the gun because the recoil is rather punishing.

I once thought a few ounces wouldn't matter when I switched from a Glock G19 to a CZ P-01. I LOVE the P-01, but I didn't like carrying it because it weighed more than the polymer Glock. To me, I'd rather have a lighter gun -- I'm going to be carrying it more than shooting it... a lot more.

Here is a comparison of the LCR and the S&W:

Crimson Trace... very cool, but $590+ shipping??? The CT grip does appear to be slightly shorter at the bottom... maybe less likely to snag in a pocket on draw.

I think this is the model I'm going to go with. I like the idea of having some advantage at night without sacrificing the comfort of the Hogue grip or needing batteries for my sight. I've found these on GunBroker.com for under $400 shipped. The XS 24/7 sight uses a Trijicon tritium vial.

I've heard tales of gas scoring between the cylinder and the polymer frame. Dunno how much truth there is to this, but IMO, there are better choices out there.

Cool! 1/2 ounce lighter with smaller profile "boot grip" and the XS tritium sights for $440 + shipping. I think I'm in love.

Ya don't need sights on that belly gun, and you ain't gonna fire it for fun.

My Dad has a tarus 38 similar but way older than that and I like it, its a killer.

Gun like that go with the lightest and easiest to conceal, if you need to use it you won't notice any recoil and the recipiant will have powder burns around the bullet holes. You may have to piss on them to put the fires out.

    Thats what they're made for.

Actually, there are a lot of reviews that say it is as accurate as any other carry gun. One reviewer said he was able to keep a 5 shot group at 5" at 25 yards (shooting from a bag). Also, there are special loads for snubbies that don't throw a 2' flame. I've tried the Taurus, and I agree that it wasn't fun to shoot, but I've read a lot of good things about the trigger and recoil absorbing grip on the LCR.

IIRC... don't they only take orders from FFL dealers? Or can I order from them and have it shipped to an FFL.

After reading some more .357 reviews I've decided to stick with the .38.

CDNN will need to have a FFL copy on file. Have the gun shop of your choice fax a copy to them. Then go ahead and order it from CDNN. They will ship it to your local gun store. Most shops usually charge you a $30-$40 fee.

Not sure what your final cost might be, but you can ask before you buy.

    Good luck.

Thanks! I called CDNN and they said I could buy directly from them. My friend knows a local gunsmith with an FFL who does free transfers because he thinks local people should own more guns. That deal at CDNN is the best I've seen... too bad it doesn't have the XS sights, but I know how to use standard sights.

Because it weighs 1/4 pound more due to a steel frame instead of aluminum.

I say go for it. I moved to the dark side (revolvers) when I bought a 327 taurus. It's more comfortable to carry in the summer and I like shooting it more then my Glock. Report back what you think.

    I have a Ruger LCR.

Well actually it's my wife's "go to" handgun.

She has some problems with her hands and found the trigger to be the easiest to manage of the handguns we tested.
That, and she doesn't have to rack a slide using a revolver.

As firearms go, its definitely a point and shoot model. It may have good inherent accuracy but its tricky trying to
line up the sights and squeeze a round off with any accuracy beyond 15 ft.

It does jump a bit as it is quite light and .38 special has a bit more oomphf then 9mm.

I've been trying to teach my wife that defensive shooting requires shooting with some rapidity as well as accuracy but
    its a work in progress.

With only 5 shots, this isn't my first choice but it is easily concealable, very reliable, and has a decent caliber.
She keeps it loaded with low recoil Hydra-Shok.

    Like I said, I've got a crush.

I'll probably commit to the relationship in the near future (after I "break up" with another gun or two to raise capital), and we'll see how the relationship works out. It is popular enough that if I flip it I shouldn't be out much cash -- if any. Sounds like a nice fling.

Have you shot a .357 mag snubbie? I have, not fun, ferocious recoil in that short barrel and 1/2 gun, 1/2 flamethrower. .38 Spl. is enough for handguns in that size range, IMO.

Got this one, pretty happy with it. The barrel is ported, no muzzle flip but like Irons says, this type weapon isn't one you'll be shooting a lot for fun. Even with the porting, recoil with +P rounds is right sporty though that makes not a lick of difference for it's intended purpose.

You'd probably like my S&W Model 19 Combat Special in 357 that I bought somewhere back in the late 70's to early 80's. They had this one down right, the mechanism is velvet smooth and easy and the trigger breaks like a 1/25th inch glass rod, just an incredibly crisp and light *snap*. Right up there with a Python in my opinion.

The classic Smith & Wesson revolvers are holding their value nicely. They are palpable examples of 20th-century American craftsmanship. Everybody needs a steel-framed revolver or three.

My hand gets sore looking at that thing, can't believe they make one in .357

Rather have an LCP that fits into a wallet holster but this one doesn't spit shells.

Guess it depends what you want it for and where you got it.

5 shots is looking like it might not be enough the way things are going these days.

I like watching Hickok45 reviews. He did one on the Ruger LCR. Reading this thread and watching Hickok45's review makes me want to shoot one to see what it's like.

I love rugers, but these LCRs are quite the handful and add in the horrible DAO trigger it made me beef up to an sp101. The recoil doesn't bug me as much as that damn double action pull, especially in a high stress situation it could be tough.

I know you posted your distaste for S&W, but I think they are onto something good with their new shield model M&P. Its a concealable, single stack, semi auto 9mm or 40sw that's STRIKER fired. The trigger is absolutely amazing...

P.S. I got laser grips for my Kimber TLE/RL 1911 and its kind of a waste of money at $200, IMO. Its a cool novelty thing I guess, but I should of just bought more ammo instead haha

It's in my pocket right now. It shoots REAL nice. I haven't found a carry method I prefer, but now that winter is coming I'm looking for an OWB belt slide holster (LH). I just put it in my pocket, but I'm thinking about getting the Nemesis holster.

It is built well, and I can't imagine anyone not liking it. Definately get the .38. You don't want to shoot .357 from it -- it is amazingly comfortable with hot .38 rounds, but I think .357 would be over the top. Also, those few ounces of more weight to carry would be a pain -- it is already just a little heavier than I like (I'm used to REALLY small 9mm guns).

Also, get a model with the tritium sights. I was able to pick up mine on gunbroker for $375 w/free shipping (NIB).

I already own the ruger gp100 which I really like but not for concealed carry. I have the walther ppk/s .380 (21 ounces) also so the extra 4 ounces won't bother me (i weigh 240lbs). So unless I get struck by lightening I will be ordering the LCR .357 with tritium sights.

    Thanks everyone for your input.

You are aware that ol' Bill Ruger is quoted as saying "No honest man needs more than 10 rounds" and that was why >10 rd mags were not available for the Mini-14 unless you were LE until about 2 or 3 three years ago? Indeed, despite the end of the AWB, Ruger had a policy of No Twenty Round mags for civies. Ruger also consciously ignored the CCW market until about that same time. They also didn't offer a >10 rd mag for the 10/22 until about 2-3 years ago.

But, times change, and so do companies. S&W is no longer owned by the group that "sold out", and is now publicly traded. Ruger has embraced CCW, large mags, and even AR-15s. Heck, they even sell stuff that is suppressor-ready.

I'm not saying you need a S&W (I don't even own a S&W, but I do have a Ruger Redhawk). I'm just saying not to discount them because of past problems created by people no longer with the company.

I'm puzzled by the appeal of the LCR over, say, the Scandium or even Aluminum J-Frame. Sure, the Ruger is a very nice gun, but why choose plastic when metal is available? Price? Perhaps. But I'll take the permanency of metal over plastic any day.

My Rohrbaugh 9mm does not print at all. Light weight an super thin. Trigger is simply awsome, but the price is steep, especially my model, one of only 90 guns they had sent off to the Robar factory, finished on every part, including the trigger and hammer. Does not need a drop of oil. The finish is that good. I can't quite get my ring finger on the grip, but I shoot it better with one hand than two...

I do love the Ruger LCR, or the Taurus Tom posted for a small revolver. I think that is the next weapon I will get.

Price is certainly a factor for most of us.

Another interesting thing about the LCR is the trigger. It is pretty different in feel compared to the SP-101, 642, 342, and pretty much every other revolver out there. I can't say I've ever fired a 642 or 342 with a "nice" trigger and, to me, the LCR is a bit better. YMMV.

If you read <SLV> posts, he is concerned about every ounce of additional weight. While weight is not as much factor to me, think about all the new jet aircraft they make all composit and stronger than steel. I may be 59 years old but I'm not stuck in the past.

Lightweight is great for carryin'...it's the shooting with accuracy at multiple assailants that is the problem.

    LCR = 13.5 ounces

    S&W 340 = 11.4 ounces

Complete failure in design. .44 Magnum in a brittle Rare Earth alloy? WTF?! .44 Magnum puts strain on the best stainless steels!

Oh, and BTW, try firing a plastic .44 Magnum LCR. Wait, they don't make one. I wonder why? LOL
