Is Splenda Safe? Examining the Dangers of this ‘Sugar Alternative’

    Patrick Gallagher

Is Splenda safe? Unfortunately, the Splenda craze has taken a toll on the American people. Wrongfully marketed as a healthful alternative to regular sugar, ‘made from sugar so it tastes like sugar’, Splenda is actually one of the most dangerous forms of synthetic sweetener. Sucralose, the chemical name for Splenda, has been implemented as an alternative to sugar, used widely in chewing gum, bakery sweets, diet sodas, fruit juices, and other oddities contrived as food. The sweetener is actually more chlorinated than aspartame – and consequently not much different than aspartame in terms of it’s effects on the body.

Is Splenda Safe? – Research Says ‘No’

Through the extensive testing processes of the FDA, the sugary poison was considered safe for human consumption in 1998 after the effects were studied on over 100 animals and humans (only 2 of which were actually humans). And thus yet another artificial sweetener was born, putting people’s health at risk through marketing and profit-driven goals. What comes as the greatest surprise, however, is the fact that all of the testing done with Sucralose was only completed on around 40 people total – much of the studies’ goals were only to test its effects on the teeth of the subjects, and virtually nothing about the toxicity of the sweetener whatsoever. So, is Splenda safe?

Fortunately, other non-governmental studies have been completed and the results have shown that Sucralose is responsible for a variety of ailments: headaches, blurred vision, short-term dizziness, and more serious long term effects such as depression and weight gain. There are other effects associated with splenda consumption as well, such as:

Skin breaking out in hives or rashes
    Shortness of breath
    Swelling of facial muscles
    Eye irritation
    Joint pains
General sensation of anxiety in a number of consumers

The worst effect of them all? The stomach is essentially cleansed of any healthful bacterium existing within the stomach lining, in addition to increasing pH levels within the intestines. This effect directly stimulates/upsets ghrelin levels (hormones responsible for stimulating appetite, resulting in increased cravings for carbohydrates and other non essential food sources).

What is so wrongful and vile about the substance is that it is not only sold to consumer food product manufacturers, but also to a fair share of big pharma. This means that the medications that you buy may still contain the sugar sweetener without you ever knowing, as many companies are deliberately not listing Sucralose as an ingredient at all. This adds just one more reason to break any reliance for pharmaceutical medications.

No thanks, hold the saccharin, nutrasweet, aspartame, splenda, arsenic, nightshade, or whatever other toxic crap the pathetic corrupt Fascist FDA says is safe for human consumption this month. When I want something sweetened I'll just use cane or beet sugar TYVM.

The only alternative sweetener that I like is

    Stevia

You can even buy the potted herb, and use its leaves - really does the trick.

Yep, same here. I started with the "Sweatleaf" brand. It was good, but I thought it had a bit of a saccharin aftertaste. I buy "Now" brand and it does not seem to have any aftertaste. The liquid is convenient, but after comparing with the powder, I decided the powder is cheaper.

For what it's worth, a half tablespoon of the powder is good to make a gallon of nicely sweet iced tea.

Splenda BAD. Sugar BEST. Stevia GOOD.

I've never used Splenda; I try to never eat anything "artificially" sweetened if I can help it.
I remember being completely amazed at finding out some while back that Splenda is chlorinated sugar. "AYFKM"?
I think "polychlorinated hydrocarbons" should be added to the list of other banned chlorinated chemicals such as PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls - used in electrical apparatus).

Sidebar: Being pyrotechnically inclined, and knowing that some formulas for blue fire are sugar-based with a chlorine donor added, I wouldn't mind obtaining some pure sucralose (the store-bought variety is largely diluted) for experimentation to see if it might actually have any practical use in that field. ;-)

Splenda is actually the most tested artificial sweetener out on the market. The insane amount of government regulations needed to approve something like this is the reason why it took decades to finally get out.

"The sweetener is actually more chlorinated than aspartame"

Quotes like the above show that the article has no scientific merit whatsoever and is meant to instill fear to those who don't know chemistry very well (which is most of us). Where and how chemical bonds form make all the difference. Take Na (Sodium) and Cl (Chlorine). Both are harmful to humans in even moderate doses. However if chemical bonds form and NaCl is formed, you have table salt which can be consumed in large dozes without harm. Compounds can be totally different from their constituent elements or compounds! Again take H (Hydrogen) and O (Oxygen). Both are widely different from H2O. When chemical bonds form, the resulting compound is something completely new!!!

Where is the evidence this guy talks about? Headaches, eye irritation? Please. Correlation is not causation which is why scientific studies try to eliminate all other variables other than the ones being studied. Yet even then, you still have to hypothesize a pathway. A famous correlation is that rainfall in Bangladesh is linked to the performance of the S&P500. This has a higher predictive ability than GDP, employment, or a whole host of other factors. Yet correlation is not causation, the author in no way even mentions the "studies" done.

Well let me do my own study. Hell I'll do several studies and use Splenda right now. Ok, now I can safely say that numerous independent studies have PROVEN Splenda to be absolutely safe. These studies have been done by scientific minds of the highest order (me). Feel better now?
