    Default Over the years GIM

has taught me a thing or 2 or 3,

or just plain reinforced some simple things to live by,

one of which is freedom and understanding what it is,

    for instance,

noticed a propane dispensing cage and cylinders dropped off at a business near by, and it was setup in a clear drive lane on the side of the building. Yet it was not on public property, nor was it affecting me or the neighboring area.

it was also clear that it was a silly place to set one up, kind of haphazard if you will. Certainly a potential issue should someone run into it causing these cylinders to blow sky high.

but I thought about it for a bit, and decided what the hell business of mine is it? It isn't doing a thing to me or infringing on me in anyway, so I moved it to the notmybusiness pile,

I have oft thought about that, or why do I concern myself with stuff that is none of my concern? As time wears on, I find myself erring on the side of staying out of others affairs and get pretty perturbed when something so elemental to freedom is not more widespread.

The little stuff we can do on a day to day basis, to allow others their freedom while trying to hang onto our own.

whereas conversely, it is certainly aok to speak up when the need should arise, in that one person is taking advantage of a situation to the detriment of another.

This freedom stuff is deep and thought provoking at times if one ever takes the time to just stop and give it a nod.

    Scorp

There is one of those propane tank cage thingys on the sidewalk between the grocery store and the rite aide by where I work.

There is a smoking butt deposit right in front of it.

    Scorp,
It seem to be human nature, or at least all too commonplace, for folks to want to micromanage other peoples lives while at the same time ignoring personal imperfections.

It's a lot easier to stand, point, advise & even dictate than to do the hard work of cleaning up our own mess.

So let's try to spend a little more time getting to those unfinished projects laying on our own workbench.

Thanks for the reminder, I got stuff to do.

    Scorp,

Was thinking of starting a thread similar to this. Only I would title it "THANKS ALOT YOU GUYS" with a sub title of "You are really messing with my head".

I'm totally messed up by GIM and I haven't been here for a smidging of the time that you have. I have always tried to see things in many perspectives and while I think some thoughts posted here may be extreme or bizzare, the posts are a collection of critically thinking people that do what they can to make their world a better place.

As for the none of my business, I reccogmend that you don't hang around those cylinders any longer than you have to or it will be your business.

I guess with age comes wisdom. So really, Thanks alot, you guys (and gals).

you freedom stops at the end of my nose. i am too a live and let live person. where does one draw the line? i live in the house where i was born. a nice middle class neighborhood. people took pride in their yards and kept up their homes. alot of them have long since passed away. now their are alot of young people and some of the houses have become rentals. the thing now is to park three and four cars in the front on the grass. this sh*t dont fly with me. a friend of mine, a raltor said other than crime this is the number one act that depreciates a neighborhood. i feel like you do stay out of others business. i finally got tired of it and started calling the local authorities on inspections to come and first ask them not to do this and after that to cite them. this is a fine line in my opinion. you try and screw me out of my biggest asset im gonna come down on you!

I see your point, no one wants a pork farm to be next to their house.
I guess if you live where those not allowed to park a car on the grass kind of laws exist, then have at it.
    I'm glad I don't live there.

I used to take pride in my mortgage free home. Used to keep the yard immaculate and always had one or two improvement projects going. Just can't do it anymore, I can't pretend as though I own the property I live on and go right on paying property tax rent. I give up on the notion that I'm personally free to own anything save my own live corpse. Even then drug, alcohol, seat belt, and a plethora of other bs laws make me wonder sometimes if we even have the freedom left to decide what to do with our own bodies. I won't even consider telling a neighbor or anyone else what to do with property they mistakenly believe they own unless they're using it to directly inflict harm on myself or my family.

When I moved into the house I currently live in almost 10 years ago, the water heater was shot. It was replaced, and the old one was put out on the side of the house. I called the local refuse company, to see about getting it picked up. They have annual coupons, where they will pick up items like that, at no charge once a year. So I set it all up, drag the water heater UP the sloped driveway, and set it near the road, still on my property. This is a rural area mind you, and my nearest neighbors are about 1/8th mile away, we can't see each others houses due to all of the oak trees around here, and the curvy roads. So the refuse co. is supposed to pick up the water heater a day or so after I hauled it up the driveway. They never showed up that week. The following week, someone shows up on like Wednesday with a flatbed to pick it up. I ask the guy about not getting it the week before, and he replies "Oh, I'm here to pick this up, because someone complained about it!" LOL! So the County complaint Dept. acted faster than the refuse co. The thing was only out there for 7 days, and some local Gadfly had to complain about it! Get a life!

Thanks for all the great comments guys,

re that realization that one doesn't own a darn thing unless it is metal is certainly something a guy should take notice of,

the realization that we all have varying opinions of the definition of freedom would be another,

and surely, without question, there must be some rules to live by as humans have proven throughout history that left to their own devices, they are cruel, cunning, deceitful in many fashions whether they disagree with anothers skin color, his culture, or his religion.

I can't answer that humans are capable of living in harmony without rules of some type,

Freedom is such a little word, carrying such a heavy weight

GIM has taught me a couple of things as well. Among them, that the internets is a source of valuable and reliable news and information, so long as you mind your sources.

It has also helped me to be not so quick to dismiss arguments that might rub me the wrong way.

Most importantly, it has reinforced my belief in the importance of firm and consistent principles when it comes to defending liberty.

    Long live GIM!

See, if banksters could not inflate the money supply by giving out shady loans to people like you, no one would give a **** if a neighbor parked his cars on the lawn. Alas, we have to continue to live under this usurious system until it collapses.

If you have good neighbors, do what you can to keep them.

Had a welfare queen (and her boyfriend, when he was not in jail) live next door to me for five years. You could not imagine what went on. When they moved, the house was pretty much condemned.

Down the road a couple moved in. The husband is the caretaker for the golf course. He keeps his lawn in perfect condition. He asked me to spray for dandelions on his back lawn. I did. I let him use my dumpster for free. Anything to keep them living here. If you have good neighbors, be appreciative of them. If they move, worse can move in.

But today, the government kills and takes our property.

    Thanks for the thread Scorpio.

We are fortunate to realize the real value of metals, but I think our only true asset is ourselves. Which, unfortunatlly can also be our greatest liability.

When we take responsibilty for our own actions and our place in this world, the word victim doesn't exist. That's freedom for me.

Apparently a lot of the folks here at GIM don't feel that way. About a year ago on GIM I related a situation across the street from my sister's house in a very neat and well maintained subdivision. The across the street neighbors were starting their own little junkyard with two rusted out cars on blocks in the front yard and the motor from one sitting in the driveway for over 6 months. The rest of the yard was as debris laden as you would expect. I called the county code enforcement people who promptly wrote the "neighbors" a ticket and gave them 2 weeks to clean it up, which they did.

The consensus here on GIM was that I was a Nazi and a meddler.

The fine line is that no one has the right to not be offended. There must be a violation of life, property or freedom.
You don't have a soul. You are a Soul. You have a body. -C.S. Lewis

In economics, rent-seeking is an attempt to derive economic benefit by manipulating the social or political environment in which economic activities occur, rather than by adding value.

No monopoly in the history of mankind has reformed itself from within. It has always taken an external threat – a competitor – to drive internal change.

On a serious note, I was motivated to get a shotgun to protect myself and my family, not only because it's my responsibilty, but to exercise my 2 amendment rights.

On a much bigger scale is my pistol permit, which in NYS is no small matter to get. I put it off for years and wouldn't have ever gotten it due to the amount of hassle. But the relentless free spirits on GIM finally motivated me to get off my a$$ and do it.

Who knows maybe this formal will directly save my life. For that I am thankful.

edit: My ham license too, I for got about that.
