Default Venezuela bans private gun ownership

Gee, who saw this one coming? A socialist/communist government, a paragons of feel good nice-nice, taking the guns out of the hands of those unruly people? Who would have thunk it?

"Hugo Chavez's government says the ultimate aim is to disarm all civilians" but it is for their protection.

A person looking at the past 100 years and the records of mostly socialist/communist totalitarian governments in murdering their own disarmed citizens just may be a little cynical about the real purpose.

In economics, rent-seeking is an attempt to derive economic benefit by manipulating the social or political environment in which economic activities occur, rather than by adding value.

No monopoly in the history of mankind has reformed itself from within. It has always taken an external threat – a competitor – to drive internal change.

I bet they won't get many turned in. Prolly a pile of rusty flintlocks.

I guess the only silver lining to this story is that the local border economies of Columbia, Brasil and especially Guyana will benefit by the income of smuggling in weapons to Venezuela. Guyana has an ax to grind with Chavez over his re-ignition of the issue of the Zone of Reclamation that encompasses nearly half of Guyana.
