cost is like $70 for an Ipad version (2 or 3) and includes a screen cover as well for that price...
I have not purchased a tablet because I could not find a milspec one

Maybe just me being in a bad mood today, but I dont consider adding a case or cover to an ipad as making it milspec. The ipad under the case is still the same.

Speaking of milspec, I have an actual milspec printer around here somewhere. It's an old Tempest-rated HP, made out of aluminum plate and wire shielding mesh to keep Soviet spies from wirelessly eavesdropping on your office printouts.
I held it in my hands
I OWN military vehicles and KNOW what the 810 spec is
Go to their site...
Can you SHOOT YOUR IPAD WITH A PAINTBALL GUN?
DO you own a milspec COMPUTER? I DO - three of them
Do you own a milspec phone? I DO
Do you own a milspec ham radio? I DO
but stupid is always right, RIGHT?

That is correct. The case will handle the shock...but the inside components will not. Ruggedized electronics are built from the ground up with similar (not same) insides. Special frames are used to dampen kinetic energy. Stock models don't have that.
I'm also puzzled as to why anyone interested in survivalism or preparedness would even touch an iPhone or iPad. Talk about operational security breach!
The objective is not to die for our freedom, but to make them die for our freedom.
Properly engineered cases can preserve fragile equipment. Didn't you ever do the egg thing? I've dropped my iPhone dozens of times with a case that helps prevent harm, but is not even close to the ones that heavily protect the unit. Still fine. And WTF, I'm due for a nearly free upgrade in a month (couple hundred bucks). The time it saves me is worth a whole lot more.
What about EMP. .
The "MilSpec" case won't do squat for that. .
The web site doesn't claim MilSpec, and doesn't even call it that.
Just added drop resistance and screen protection.
Hence the name Drop Tech

I can think of a situation where an ipad was invaluable. Last hunting season my buddy got an elk down right at last light. We finished dressing it out in the dark and made our way back to the truck so we could pick it up. Half way to the truck a heavy fog rolled in. By the time we got to the truck the visiblity had gone to a few feet. We had to drive cross country to get to the elk (private ranch). GPS showed us kind of where it was, but it didn't show the terrain. In the end we used Google Maps in satellite view on an iPad and were able to navigate right to it. Moral of the story is that it was just a tool. No matter how dire or not so dire the situation is, you need to look at all the tools that you have and apply them in the most efficient manner.
The MIL-STD-810 encompasses a wide variety of tests, up to and including rain, fungus, exposure to sand and dust, gunfire vibrations etc etc. So while that case may make the Ipad more durable it does not necessarily make it "milspec". And simply holding one would never be sufficient to make that determination. So, you might want to go easy on the stupid comments, they make you look...well you know...

Also, unless you are buying from the military, you probably own very few actual "milspec" items. Any company can claim milspec without doing any actual testing and there is no authority to check standards and compliance.

Let's see - note they are all LINKS to the given products
Computers - GO BOOK III's made by General Dynamics
Phone - SONIM - frozen in a block of ice and still rang
Ham Radio - Yaesu VX7R - reviews on eham.net
yeah, because YOU'RE the only one who knows 'milspec', RIGHT?
all my electronics meets, or EXCEED Milspec 810G
sheesh - WHEN I SAY MILSPEC, I MEAN MILSPEC
and just so we are clear, the gumdrop case is ONLY a case and does not make the tablet itself milspec - but it definitely makes it a lot tougher than one without - and the Otter Box is another one.
IF YOU WANT A MILSPEC TABLET, look at the 'Toughpad'
I believe they are about $2500 right now because they have just been released about two months ago
I ALWAYS purchase them AFTER they've been in production for a while so I KNOW how well they work (or how poorly they did NOT work)

I OWN MILSPEC, I OWN MILSPEC.........MY PRECIOUS!
Sorry kid, I don't own milspec. Not a spec of it. I was in the military. I understand what it means to have your weapon system manufactured by the lowest bidder with an eye toward spare parts sales.
Go and grab up all of that tacticool mall ninja stuff you can. I'll stick with my un-milspec H&K and M1a.
A tacticool cell phone, when the first thing off line will be cell phones and the interbuttz.
Tell us again just how smart you are. Please. Eventually you'll convince yourself if you click your heels 3 times and wish your way out of Kansas.

Yeah cupcake - you know everything
ME? I'm just a stupid hick who's HARD ON EQUIPMENT. So I just purchase the toughest I can find. Ever drop you laptop OFF A TABLE? I have. It still works. Same when my three dogs wanted to play with one of them and knocked it around for a while. IT STILL WORKS.
Those laptops are in cop cars all over this country. SO GEE, I OWN SOMETHING THAT GET'S COFFEE AND DONUTS SPILLED ON IT AND IT STILL WORKS.
Why don't YOU ENLIGHTEN US ALL AS TO HOW SMART YOU ARE? Share something with us? ANYTHING?
NAH, you just want to criticize. That makes you think that your BIG head is really kewl.
WHO CARES? NO ONE HERE. The whole point of this forum is to share information.
ME? I like to share things I PERSONALLY OWN AND HAVE USED FOR QUITE SOME TIME.
Sheesh, some people are so small, the only way they look good - EVEN TO THEMSELVES - is to tear everyone else down.
