Default I got a REAL treat today....the AA 12 shotgun

The Atchinson Automatic 12 gauge shotgun !

    Read about 'em here:

    Modern Firearms - Atchisson AA-12

Got to meet with the current manufacturer that lives not far from me, and burn thru a drum of 20 rounds. Pretty awesome weapon !

You ain't lived until you've sent 20 rounds of buckshot down range in 4 seconds !

    Absolutely NO recoil at all.

The one I'm holding has had 6,000 rounds run thru it and never cleaned.

I rarely get gun envy, but I've got a real case of it now.

Price tag ( if you could buy one.....he won't sell to the public due to liability, and has all the orders he wants from overseas )

    $14,500

He had two BIG gun safes full of them going to the Army of India in a few weeks.

What kind of situation would warrant unloading 20 rounds of 12 gauge in 4 seconds?

    Yeah, there ya go.....

He is also working on things like this:

Mounting one or more to a remote controlled mini robot that can be sent downrange to wipe out whole groups without exposing the operator to any return fire.

Also, a stair climbing version.....mount with weapons, you could remote control clear a whole building.

With a toy like that, there would not be any argument about buying a progressive reloader for that beast, to keep it fed. Would sure keep the swamp clear of nasty's.

    TnAndy,

Luv ya like a brother, BUT...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gESLOmz-4sc

Saiga does the same - you can tame the recoil with a muzzle brake (not on the one in the vid)

Twenty rounds in five seconds - AND THEY MENTION THE AA12 in the video as the only other shotgun that can do this

and it doesn't cost $14k, more like $1200 (or less if you know the right place to pick one up and live in a state that allows it)

Hey, wasn't doing a comparison shopping......just posting about a treat.

On the cost, Jerry spent 1.3 million bucks to take Atchinson's original design and actually get it to work. Jerry spent a bundle on high speed camera's to see what was actually going on with the weapon and fix the problems in the original design. That R&D, along with the fairly low volume ( they make less than 1,000/yr ) contributes to the price tag.

I got to pretend I was hanging out with "the Professional Russian" at Knob Creek not long ago. He is a charismatic character! Gets to play with some fun stuff. I don't know anything about the guy other than that.

I first heard of the A12 in roughly 1984(?), read about it in SOF I think. Everyone was excited about it, then came the 1986 law and it quietly faded from view.

I for one am extremely happy it's alive and well, regardless of if I ever get to see one or not. Besides that; opportunity x preparedness.

    TnAndy,

    NOT disagreeing with you.

As a matter of fact I would bet long odds that the money you has stated is WAY under what he has actually invested to get this project up and running - most gunsmiths/arms designers rarely include THEIR TIME as a cost - it's a passion, not a business

at least until the bills stack up and you either stop the build, or find a market to sell your weapons system in - and that's just to keep it going

I know, been there, done that...

I worked for RMA 12 years ago - and I used to keep in touch with the owner - he has TURNED DOWN offers for him to continue to make the 'Patriot' AR pistol that he designed and produced for a while

he has had offers for 100 to 1000 units with the money paid up front

he still says NO - it's just not worth the hassle

THE website says they are selling them again in the 'civilian version' read semi-auto for $3000 per copy for the Patriot AR pistol - so maybe I need to call the owner - maybe he changed his mind

That is a "blaze of glory" firearm. Cool, yes. But it is your last chance at taking someone(s) down with you because once it is empty you are toast.

Really? It's called a tactical re-load. You practice for it.If you own a weapon, you learn how to use it properly, and effectivley and responsibly.

aa12 has been around for a while. glad you got to test one of those puppies out.

Main drawback of the gun is probably it's heavy (if you have to be toting it around) and useful only in special sitautions (close quarters, it's a shotgun).

20 rounds in 4 seconds isn't too ridiculous. Imagine how much damage a normal 00 buckshot will do. Now imagine you hold for 1 second bursts and send 5 of those in a general direction. And no one says you HAVE to fire on full auto. It's capable of normal semi-auto fire as well...

Personally, I'd prefer to overwhelm rather than underwhelm. The 20 round drum already beats anything a normal shotgun has in terms of ammo. You could fire 10 rounds full auto, and still have more rounds to single fire at targets than a pump. But that's just me.

Loud? I hope so. Heavy? I don't care. I volunteered to carry the M-203 for my squad, backing up our M-60 gunner. I used to bug my armorer to hang a Remington 1100 off of a G-3 or an M-14 for me.

Weight next to firepower is a trivial thing. A single shot shotgun is great, but, auto-loading (if only semi-automatic) are more better.

Now then, shotgun class. Pay attention.

    Fast forward to 4:30.

As far as the rest of it, not impressed with the "flechette", bird shot is for birds (see The Box O' Truth for details), I have an arrow launcher.

However, there aren't many things more effective for crowd dispersal than a flamethrower.

If you were carrying that + a spare loaded drum you won't have much room to carry anything else. If you are carrying more than one spare loaded drum you are really going to be bulky and waited down.

It's a real neat gun. It just isn't practical -- not even for LE or Military.

$14K is alot of scratch to drop on a gun. I have a Saiga 109 and it is well under $1k. I bought a few 12 round mags for it (you can also get 20 round drums for it but I don't own any, so I can't attest to the reliability of em')...It's a great gun and very reliable. The only tweak I did to it was install a pin in the mags to keep the first round from deforming when it is stored in the gun, as the spring pressure tends to compress the first round and the shell won't chamber. EZ fix and well worth the money...

There's a reason why military weapons are full auto and civilians are not. They work or they would not be used.

It's a real neat gun. It just isn't practical -- not even for LE or Military.
Military and SF carries way more than a spare drum. Well over 100lbs in many cases.
