Default How much of a pay cut are you willing to take ?

Since most Americans blame blue collar labor (and associated labor unions) as the prime cause for Wall Street closing factories and sending their companies overseas for cheaper labor - i.e., the cause of the great recession is the working class ........ how much of a pay cut would you like contribute to save Wall Street .... err ... I mean, the economy ... ?

Be honest, here's a chance to show your charity as a concerned citizen.

I gave myself a pay raise, but there's less work so it's a push.

Gives me more time around the house to chat with my late 40's early 50's pension neighbors (cops, ff, teachers, GM)

Topics of conversation range from - (me) Fast & Furious, Elections, Paying Bills, Veterans issues, US Constitution, etc...

(them) 2nd Homes, Summer vacations, New vehicles, new mortorcycles, cruises, anger at GM for no longer covering Viagra refills, etc...

In "real" terms if your nominal raises have been less than say 8-10% for the last 10-11 years then you have been taking a compounding pay cut in purchasing power every year.

The market is what it is. I'll take a pay cut if employers can find a suitable replacement for lower dollars to do my job. I can't make the money I want this easy working for myself. If you're just a person with little to no specific skills in demand, good luck.

If I was willing to take a pay cut, I'd stop working harder to make more money. I might not make as much money one week as I did in another, but I'm not sitting around moping about a pay cut. I'm busting my butt to make the money I need to make to pay my bills.

I gave myself a huge paycut when I left the country. Most people where I'm at work for about $5 a day, all day, if they are educated enough to even have a job here.

I took a 10% pay cut in 2008, along with a 10% hours cut - I accumulate 4 hours a week, I can take them when I like work permitting. The workload dropped dramatically at that same time. Since then, we have been offered 5% back - last year, I was the only person to decline, and the rest back this year, again, I was the only person to decline, in fact, I asked for 20% but they got mad. My reasoning is the taxes move me up to paying more than I get, so the cut was a winner for me. There is more to it than just that, but bottom line, I would rather not work, but then I would not have extra money for PMs.

So I took a 10% bullet, but really it was for my own self-interest, not Wall St. BTW, the company I work for has just shy of 2k employees but is 100% private company, family owned. Nice people.

In the US, a lot of times its where the worker does the same work at the same efficiency, and the work requires minimal skill, yet the worker wants extra pay.

This is just wrong on so many levels. Hard to know where to start.

I almost want to say, "Tell your mother the pie was nice even though it rained Saturday." <-- That is just as accurate and germane (whut's the Germans have to do with it?)

So let us start with some BASIC basics:

The median income per household member (including all working and non-working members above the age of 14) was $26,036 in 2006. In 2006, there were approximately 116,011,000 households in the United States. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Househo..._United_States

I'll do the arithmetic for ya: 116M times $26K equals

    $3,016,286,000,000
<-- duzzat number ring a bell?

That is 3 trillion bucks <-- and THAT is the income of everybody. Hmmm...

How much did the Gummint blow this year?

How much does the Gummint owe? Lemme go look at the debt clock...

    Ah.

$119.5 TRILLION <-- that would cover all working Americans even if the households had forty workers in each one (on average).

How much of a pay cut would be required to straighten it all out?

That is easypeasy: Take ALL THE MONEY FROM EVERY SINGLE AMERICAN. Take 100% of all earnings of all households.

That will really not do a fargin thing regarding the $119Trillion, but it would pretty much cover THIS year's spending.

What was your question again? Want to rephrase?

Yeah, the unions have priced themselves out of competition with the rest of the world... At a VERY bad time. They just made the whole American problem worse. Worse for themselves.

I would say the unions and their blindness are about the equivalent of some dude in the rear engine room of the Titanic removing a rivet... AFTER the boat hit the iceberg. He was not helping, he was definitely making the situation worse -- not the slightest bit better -- but the big picture was one of much greater seriousness.

I've already UNwillingly been forced to take several pay cuts in terms of monetary debasement/what my fiat "pay" can no longer buy.

I was at a gas station the other day, the clerk (young and definitely dumb) was yacking about the economy and why he opposed a minimum wage increase.

I inquired about he reasoning behind that.

He stated raising wages only increases the cost of everything and he couldn't afford it.

I told him, since increasing wages is bad then lowering wages should be good because it would lower cost for everyone.

    The fool agreed.

I saw the store owner he worked for was only twenty feet away and could hear the entire conversation.

I said to the clerk, "Great logic, I'm sure your boss will appreciate you asking him to lower your wages."

The store owner smiled and the clerk stood there with a blank stare on his face.

    pay cut = zero

    tariffs = level the field

charge admission to the economy we built and maintain

neither red nor blue attempts to level the field

with tariffs and a publicly owned central bank there would be ZERO need for any income tax

    but shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

    focus on the other sh-t

yeah, the central planners know the right minimus wage

ridiculous that anyone here still thinks the planners can pick prices (for anything) and 'help' the situation by distorting the market through fixing prices

I'd still like to know how this works. You work 10% less, down to 36 hours and earn 10% less in gross wages, yet you claim you take home more money because of taxes. What, now you qualify for food stamps - and it's my taxes paying for your foods stamps you are talking about?

Be honest, here's a chance to show your charity as a concerned citizen.
    Do we have a choice?

Unfortunately, wages have been declining for the most part since 1970, with some exceptions.

Blue collars got hit first and then it spread to almost all industries.

White collar or blue collar. As George Carline said in the youtube "The American Dream," it doesn't matter what color your shirt is....

    We're screwed financially.

Time to get all of our spiritual and family and financial houses in order - in this order.....
